try the deer park releases, they work fine for me and you can find ones that are compiled for whatever flags your processor supports.
the signifigance of these updates to firefox and their frequency is basically proving that it wasn't just a room full of chimps typing code in redmond and that people need to accept software needs to constantly evolve and adapt to work safely. maybe it's early-man in redmond with activex still existing, but not chimps.
I have a minor but baffling issue with Firefox 1.0.6 at the minute. For some reason on some sites I lose the ability to right click (to copy/paste). Right click works here in this forum. I upgraded to 1.0.6 the other day, all seemed well, then yesterday I pressed the little blue arrow in the top right hand corner that signified that updates were available to themes etc, did that, then noticed this buggy business with right click. Is there something obvious that I should be doing that I'm not? (Other than not pressing blue arrows...)
I have another Firefox profile for the other person who uses this PC - that profile is fine and right click works. The updates did not load on that profile.
Any ideas welcomed.

Ah Redish, fellow Firefoxer, I am using the default theme from Firefox from Gerlich and Horlander, very plain and simple. All seemed okay with the upgrade to 1.0.6 for all of one day until I did the update thing with the blue arrow - now I am just perplexed, couldn't find anything in the help and forum at Firefox, had hoped overnight and on reboot the PC fairy would have fixed it but no such luck.Right click works in this form but not on the post once it's posted, or on the existing text in the thread below the form or on other sites. Perhaps I should create another clean profile and start again. Ack. I'll let you know if I get it resolved.
Do you have any extensions, that fiddle with the menu, installed? Are they unique to your profile? If so perhaps one of them isn't compatible with 1.0.6 and needs to be updated or uninstalled.
Thank Redish and K - your question got me thinking about what got automatically updated when the problem started. I just went in and uninstalled the Mouse Gestures extension and it seems to have resolved the problem. Yay! Blinkin' thing has been driving me crazy.

IIRC, there are more than one Mouse Gestures extension to choose from. This one usually works well. But you probably just needed to reselect which button it should use in the options.
Thanks Redish -Happy little clickers we are...I had to make rude mouse gestures to that extension but all seems okay now (which is of course the surefire way to bring the fickle finger of PC'dom slamming down onto my keyboard - I get afraid sometimes.
Okay...I'm going to show my ign'ance here, but can someone tell me what the motivations are to move to these alternative browsers like Firefox ? What is it about them that is better than IE ? Are they easy to learn (for us misfits)?
I also wonder about e-mail. If I changed to another browser, is e-mail affected...do they come with their own e-mail programs, cu'z I grow weary of exporting all my info once again?
I'd appreciate any and all recommendations - I'm all for positive change, but I'd rather not add any more stress or strain to my little world...
Firefox offers several benefits over IE, the question is whether those matter to you. It can import IE settings, so your world shouldn't be totally messed up.
I suggest you just download it and give it a try. If you don't like it then you can always uninstall it. However, if you do like it DON'T try to uninstall Internet Explorer.
I am a faithful Firefox user myself and will never switch back to IE. Firefox is far less likely to incur spyware and security breaches than IE for starters. Here are a few other features that give it a leg up on the competition.
+ Excellent built in pop-blocker
+ Tabbed browsing with CTRL-T, that allows you to open multiple sites without multiple windows
+ Many themes and tools available to personalize the browser
+ It's open source, so it has a ton of flexibility and allows for a plethora of advanced features
+ Clean, easy to navigate features, easy to adapt to even if you've been an IE user for years.
+ Fast, easy to use and, as previously stated, way more secure than IE.
For security reasons alone, I would recommend the switch to Firefox. Add in all the other features and it's no contest.
Tabbrowser Preferences - for the new tab button beside the tabs instead of the navigation bar Forecastfox - current weather positioned bottom left status bar IE View - right click "View in IE" for stubborn sites Download Manager Tweak - can't remember why I use this BBCode - right click and add formatting codes at ADT SyncMarks - syncronize favourites with IE. In case I want to go back Spoofstick - show the real url of the site being viewed FLST - when closing a tab go back to the last selected tab FlatStyle - office xp style menu Back IS Close - right click and close tab. for those annoying tabs that open overtop of another tab within a pop up window that give you no other way to close the tab (without closing all windows)
On top of the good features already mentioned, the fox also has some great options available for looking at porn sites:
"Down Them All" downloads all images linked from this page.
"linked images" button opens a new window showing all the full-sized images available on a thumbnail index page.
"increment" and "decrement" buttons advance and retard the number in a url, so you can browse through galleries without manually typing over the address numbers.
I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email. It has some nice spam filtering, is easy to use and much less likely to spread viruses than Outlook or Explorer. I recommend it. When you install it, it should be able to import your address book from whatever mail program you use now.
Regarding Ad Block, copy and paste the entire list below including "[Adblock]", save to Notepad (.txt file) and use Ad Block's import feature. No more worries about pop-ups or unwanted ads
First, it's not dependent on ActiveX (M$ incarnation) which most Trojans exploit.
Second, the browser affords the option of allowing/not allowing web sites to self-install software. I've heard that M$ supposedly remedied this situation with IE in SP2
Third, you'll discover whilse you learn the ins/outs
Hey JagMicrosoft's browser is just fine if you keep up to date with security patches and read before you click. But the big benefit I've found is tabbed browsing and a bit more security.
To expand a bit on what someone said earlier about ActiveX. Microsoft's ActiveX allows web sites to embed tiny programs that can access your hard drive and do a lot of cool stuff (windows update, microsoft update and trendmicro's free virus and spyware scan from the browser) but it can also allow idiots to damage your computer.
The decision to switch browsers does not affect your email program. But Mozilla does have a free email program called thunderbird if you're interested. (I've never used it) but I'm sure thunderbird has the ability to import your address book and mail from outlook or outlook express (I know firefox imports favourites). The pain would be going back if you wanted to.

It's up on the site now Redish. I saw it in the download section of the mozilla firefox site last night but didn't have the time to DL it because I'm still on dial up. Perhaps tonight I will get it.

Almost 100% of hacking is done against Microsoft products. Since something like 85% of web surfers use IE, hackers target IE so if you use Firefox, your web-surfing is safer. Here's another good idea. Use a different mail program than Outlook Express. One free program that works great is Incredimail. Import your addresses into Incredimail, delete the addresses in OE or move them somewhere else like 'My Documents', and some viruses, which use the address book in OE, won't be trasmitted to people in your address book if you're unfortunate enough to get one. You'll have to configure Incredimail, but you're safer using it than OE. Microsoft now has a free anti-spyware download at their site. It only works with XP. Use it. It can be configured to run automatically. If you have XP Home Edition, one program it doesn't have is encryption. There are free encryption programs like AxCrypt to encrypt sensitive files and folders. It's password protected. Here's a way to make your web-surfing a little more private. If you use IE at least occasionally, click on Tools at the top of the page, then click on 'Internet Options.' Some tabs appear so click on 'Content.' Click 'Auto Complete' and then clear all the checkmarks. Click on 'Clear Forms' and 'Clear Passwords.' For Firefox it's a little different. Click on 'Tools' and then click 'Options.' Click on 'Privacy.' Click on 'Saved Form Information' and clear that one. Click on 'Saved Passwords' and clear that one too.
I need help. Something just started happening to me using Firefox that I hate. But I can't figure out how to turn it off. I think that my problem was caused by an update to one of my extensions which took place yesterday, probably Tabbrowser preferences, but I'm not sure.
Suddenly, when I use the "Cntl+Enter" shortcut to complete a .com address, Firefox opens a new tab to load that site. This only happens when using this shortcut. It doesn't happen when using the "Shift+Enter" shortcut for .net addresses nor does it occur when I enter the entire address manually.
I tend to use the "Cntl+Enter" shortcut a lot. IF I can't make this stop happening, I'm going to have to stop using Firefox, because I hate this.

bill, apparently the developer shit the bed on this release-uninstall the fucker and you can do the same things with something like tab mix or if you want a million options, tabrowser extensions. firefox hasn't been impressing me for at least a year or so-it started out nicely stripped-down and functional compared to ie, now it's a fucking mess that can't avoid breaking itself on the now-numerous updates it calls home for. if you look at recent development, they're starting to disable functionalities instead of fix code with a lot of their new "security patches", give it another year or two and it'll be IE with bugs after the spyware-dirtbags figure out they've got part of the users they target using it.
It looks like the developer has retracted 1.2.8.1, which was the version that was causing me a problem. I went back to 1.2.7.1 and the problem is gone.
I've hit a problem with Firefox. I suddenly can't access some sites via Firefox. For example, if I try to get to the EuroBabeIndex main page at http://www.eurobabeindex.com/sbandomain.html I get the message "The file /sbandomain.html cannot be found. Please check the location and try again." If I try the same url on IE I get through to the page no problem. And the same situation applies with a small number of other sites. I had no problems 24 hours ago and in the meantime I have not downloaded any updates or made any changes on my computer that might have caused this, so I do not understand what is happening. Anyone else got this problem? Anyone got any ideas?

It's a mystery then.
I've tried in Safe Mode and I still get the same problem so I don't really know what I can do.
I can get to http://www.eurobabeindex.com/sbandoindex/thumbs_a.html no problem and navigate from there around the site to everywhere except the home page. There are similar ways round the problem on other sites where I have encountered it so it is only an inconvenience really but it still puzzles me as to why it has suddenly started happening.

I got fed up with it all so I uninstalled and then reinstalled Firefox and that sorted out the problem. I still have no idea why it happened or why reinstaling Firefox sorted it out. I guess it will just remain an enigma.
I guess the changes are significant enough that when 1.0.7 installs, it deactivates all existing extensions. Apparently, the only way to reactivate those extensions is to download updates to them (if they exist).
Maybe it depends on which extensions you are using. When I updating, I got a message telling me that all extensions were being disabled. Immediately after the update completed, I got the icon showing that there are extension updates. The extensions that automatically updated worked, but others, specifically BBCode and Last Tab, stopped working.
There was an update available for BBCode (which for some reason was listed as a different extension rather than a update). Once I installed that, BBCode started working again.
There was no update for Last Tab. But reinstalling the same version got it working again.
