| Cumwhipper Senior Member 4050 Posts 3/04 | I was running FireFox 3.6 very nicely for a long time. Very few issues, and after installing a great add-on called 'NoScript' (prevents any scripts from running on a page and allows you to selectively allow scripts from all the sources), my online experience was about as good as I could remember. In the midst of some other machine issues a few weeks ago, I decided to uninstall and reinstall Firefox. Using IE8 (which I abhor, but use in emergencies), I went to Mozilla's site and couldn't find Firefox, 3.6 - only 4.0, so I decided to take the plunge. Bad decision. As soon as 4.0 fired up, it got into an immediate hang interacting with Add-On manager. I got through that, but subsequently, whenever I started Firefox, the initial window froze and I had to start a SECOND window to do any browsing. Page loading is much slower, and the memory-hog issues I had to make several adjustments for in 3.6 were back with a vengeance. Running a few tabs at once was chewing up almost a half a GIG of memory. What the fuck?! I think 4.0 is still officially a beta, but still... Today I finally surrendered - found the latest patch version of 3.6 and reinstalled, and everything looks great. I hope they clean all that crap up in 4.0 or I'll stay with 3.6 until they rip it from my cold, dead hands. Anyone else tried 4.0? [Link] |

| Limpy Member I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a blowjob today. 46 Posts 8/10 | It works great. This is my first use of Firefox, so I can't compare it to earlier versions. I had been using IE8. However, it has increasingly become less-and-less dependable, typically freezing-up as non-responsive three, four, five times a day. Incredibly annoying! Also, as an XP SP3 user, and likely to remain so for quite a while yet, it seemed to be the right time to switch to a browser that supports XP, and seems to be prepared to continue doing so. Immediately, Firefox 4.0 kicks IE8's ass, and has not frozen once on either of my two computers. BTW, both my computers are kept current, patched and updated. I've seen these type of degraded performance issues (i.e. IE8) when Microsoft has decided to kill software, in this case "force" people to abandon XP and purchase Windows 7, before. And, going forward, IE9 does not support XP. Things to keep in mind: Be sure to select Firefox 4.0 as your default browser. Be sure to update Flash, Adobe Reader and Java after you install a new browser. Adobe Flash Player 10.2.153.1 Verify Flash Player Adobe Reader 9.4.3 (the latest update assuming your not trying to use Adobe Reader X -- which doesn't play well on all systems) Both 9.4.3 and X are current, supported and updated by Adobe. Here's an easy way to Verify Java Version, and then update as advised. From my experience -- and I'm assuming it is because I had not had Firefox on my system -- Flash, Adobe Reader and Java never installed "support" for Firefox on my system. After updating, all three work perfectly with Firefox 4.0. (I had experienced issues on websites before updating.) You've got nothing to lose -- and everything to gain -- by keeping these three essential helper applications updated, regardless! The bad guys are attacking computers, using flaws in older versions of these programs, in a very big way right now. |

| Cumwhipper Senior Member 4050 Posts 3/04 | I also assume that all the customizations I'd made to 3.x to make FireFox not be such a memory pig would have to be turned on again in 4.0 - a pain in the ass. I'll wait til they get 4.1 out there before attempting to upgrade. I also need a new machine, but that's yet another saga |

I tested Firefox 4 thanks to the Portable version. Changes to the UI takes some getting used to. But I haven't upgraded my main instance yet, because a few extensions I can't live without and my theme aren't compatible with that version |

Status-4-Evar is an Add-on that recreates all of the features of the old Status Bar and lets you put them in the new Add-on Bar." Seems like more work to get back to where we were, but at least you can get there. I think I'll stick with 3.6 awhile longer anyway and let the dust settle more. |

Had I known, I would've stayed with the 3.6.X branch, which still receives security fixes [o\|] Edited by - pierre78 on 6/25/2011 4:27:59 AM |

| Cumwhipper Senior Member 4050 Posts 3/04 | [rant...] Why must every damned software product constantly release new major versions? I understand it's mostly because everything else is changing and you have to add functionality to keep current, but often the look & feel is fucked with in very annoying ways, and sometimes old, but extremely useful functionality gets taken away. I work with computers and do programming and systems support for a living, and I swear I spend at least 25% of my time dealing with fucking upgrades - planning, testing, implementing, supporting new and old versions while you're upgrading, ad nauseum - it's a major pain on the ass! (Don't even get me started on network/datacenter issues). [end of rant] |

I made a backup of my profile with MozBackup beforehand, just in case. But it went OK. I only had to reinstall 2 extensions, as the versions in my FF 4.0.1 profile were no longer compatible with FF 3.6. Even though I've been using Firefox since the 1.0 version, I think it's time I started looking for another browser: - Firefox 3.6.X won't be maintained forever - with the new release cycle, I fear more add-ons will become incompatible with each new major version. Firefox without add-ons is just an average browser I already have Opera on my computer, but I rarely use it because I find it to be slow to load pages, though it's supposed to be very fast SRWare Iron looks interesting. I had concerns about privacy issues with Google Chrome. Has anyone tried it? If so, are Chrome extensions compatible with it? |

It's slow to start-up but it seems to access pages quickly once it's loaded and running. Slow to shut down also. I've never bothered to check to see if Automatic updates is yes/no option, so whenever Opera has a new release it just automatically installs it. Normally I wouldn't do that but the new versions have never been a problem. I don't use extensions, so I can't comment on that aspect of new versions and the automatic up-dates. |

| pierre78 Senior Member @pierreADT on Twitter 1139 Posts 4/10 | But I've been testing each new release thanks to the portable version. I'm definitely not impressed by them. FF7 was supposed to drastically improve memory consumption. After an 8-hour browsing session and only 1 open tab remaining, the firefox .exe process occupied 700 MB. Kudos on these "improvements" At least once a week, the firefox .exe process takes forever to end, after I close the Firefox window. CPU & HDD activity spike during that period...
It was a major shock: I had forgotten how ugly the default theme is |

s a must have for FF if you're like me and just keep tons of tabs open for no damn reason. |
