We have a voting engine developed for ADT. We just haven't used it very much.

Since movies tend to make it to DVD late and since we have a lot of porn newbies, it may be difficult to nominate or vote on newcomers, especially since most of their first performances are not on DVD. Is there a more appropriate category that can address those things? 3. I think it's a good idea to narrow down and define the categories before going live with the voting engine. For one thing, if you don't take nominations first, you'll end up with a list of dozens of people/movies for each category. Second, categories like "best supporting" and "best studio" could confuse people as to what those categories mean (AVN's supporting role tends to refer more to acting than sex and I'd pick different studios for DVD vs. overall productions). Great idea, it just needs a little more focus for it to transcend the normal "So who's your favorite porn star" thread. I'm particularly concerned about the "Newcomer" category, since even some of the people that many would consider newcomers, such as Inari, Cheyenne (aka Wildcat) or Dee, are not really newcomers at all--they all have movie credits going back to 1997 and more than 150 appearances each. It's just so hard to judge new talent when so many people don't watch the new stuff coming out on VHS. There's no day and date releasing on adult DVDs, meaning that new releases very rarely have DVD and VHS versions at the same time. For example, whereas Kelly The Coed 2 is on pre-release for DVD, I just saw Kelly The Coed 7 on VHS in my local video store. I'd argue that DVD is a very different animal from VHS right now. 2. My impression is that there are quite a few people here that haven't seen that much porn and a considerable number who have only seen it on DVD. You'd be stuck with a situation where "experts" may nominate good stuff on VHS but they will get hardly any votes because the majority has not seen it. 3. At least the media and critics awards only have to worry about stuff releases within the last year. It's not that hard to come up with nominees if you only have to worry about performances in 1999. With DVD, there's stuff released every week, some of it is new but some of it can be 20 years old. It's going to be tough enough as it is to vote on the DVD categories, since there are 3 years worth of stuff that has already been released. 4. Since this is a DVD site and since we're interested in better DVDs, it makes sense to have a number of categories specific to DVD in order to reward studios who do a good job and to "encourage" others to put effort into their releases. 5. And my point all along is that the categories need to be defined and guidelines established or else you'll get suggestions all across the board. | Drew Black broken crankshaft 8011 Posts 9/99 | Posted - Feb 29 2000 : 8:12PM $.01 - Since we are a DVD site and this is our first attempt at a catergorized voting system we should limit the number of categories to those that fall into the realm of "DVD specific". This first round can be a way of beta testing a voting system and improving upon it when we add all of the categories. I would also like our votes to be an indication to consumers and studios alike of what's great on DVD. Although performer X might have a great anal in movie Y the performance most likely is just as impressive in any format. When we are happy with the voting system we can add performer-centric categories. Initially format-centric categories might be best. $.02 - I want to do this voting system right from the beginnning if possible. I'm sure we will all have suggestions for improving it after we use it for a little while. (There's a bunch of stuff I want to change about the reviews section of the site but just haven't gotten around to it.) Let's start off small for our first round and then try to be more encompassing down the road. We generally try to get a store or studio to sponsor a giveaway in conjunction with something like the voting we are talking about. This has been a great way to get people involved for some of the things we have done on the site to date. If we ask someone to vote in 20+ categories they may experience voter fatigue. I'm not sure if a sponsor is such a great idea with this one. I'm concerned about people just voting for any random selections to be eligible for the freebies. What's your take on this issue? Just do them separately, so there isn't any confusion. I also think that newcomer is a bit hard to define. For most of the public, I would agree that a newcomer is hard to establish. I'm now just seeing people on-screen that have been making movies since 93, just not the ones I've been watching apparently - until now.
