Who would you say are the most respected/prestigious adult film directors in the world today? Thought about putting this in star crossed but I'd guess that forum is more for porn stars. Like if you had to make a top 25 list (or as long as you want) who would you say is considered the best amongst those in the industry?
For sure Mike Quasar. That guy is solid and very under-appreciated. Seventeen years in the business and getting better every year. He's not just a director, he's also a visionary; almost like a shaman in his approach to.... oh shit. I forgot to log in under my alternate screen name!! Ummmm.... in that case, Andrew Blake is pretty good.
Working? I'd say Paul Thomas, pretentious ass or not, is the finest FILMMAKER in hardcore today. David Stanley runs a close second. If Nic Andrews were still active, I'd list him as well. All the other so-called feature makers seem to have forgotten that the key in a "feature" is the story and acting.
I always thought Brandon Iron was a good director. He had a wacky sense of humor. Thing is, is he still active in the biz? He used to post here from time to time...

Agreed, agreed, agreed. Although, I read that David Stanley got fired/left Wicked, and now isn't signed up to do features with anyone. This made me very very sad. Say it ain't so...
I'd like to hear what the directors and fans think about the Gonzo guys vs the feature guys when it comes to directing. Does Paul Thomas have to harder because he has to worry more about acting and story than say John Leslie who doesn't have to worry about that stuff but perhaps shots actual better sex scenes? Would Paul Thomas make as good a Gonzo director as Jules Jordan or the top Gonzo guys? Could the top Gonzo guys excel in features if given the chance?
Yeah, but isn't that pretty tough when they're working with performers that perhaps aren't strong actors? Plus stories that can only be so good because they have to find flimsy excuses to have a certain amount of sex per movie? Written by people who may not be great writers?
Indeed. But I don't think there needs to be a "certain amount of sex" in a movie, but rather the amount of sex that's right for the given movie. As for good scripts, I think the reason most X rated scripts suck is because they're so short they don't allow for any real character or plot development. Take full, complex scripts like those to The Dancers, Through the Looking Glass, Roommates, Take Off, Amanda By Night, etc and you'll find very good writing with interesting characters and original and compelling plots. The acting, or lack thereof, has always been a problem, but I've always been OK with less than great performances if the narrative and technical aspects of the film are adequate.
In no particular order a few that immediately come to mind are... Features: Michael Raven David Stanley Stormy Daniels Eli Cross Will Ryder All of them know that both the sex and story are important and are skilled enough to weave them together rather than trying to shoehorn one into the other. As good as they are, they're also managing to improve each year. Gonzo / All Sex: Mike Quasar William H. Robby D. Pretty much the entire stable of directors at Evil Angel and Jules Jordan Video stick out in my mind with Christoph Clark, Jonni Darkko, and Manuel Ferrara coming to mind at EA and Jules Jordan and Chris Streams coming to mind at JJV. I think astroknight is a very smart man for his choices especially in the features listing(lol). I am sure that seeing Will Ryder listed right next to Eli Cross makes Eli feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
No worries! There is a mountain of product out there and it's easy to fall between the cracks. I wish I had it in me to be out there kicking ass everywhere. I just don't. I'm staying in my candy store and eating the sweet candy 24/7. My dick hurts but not nearly as much as my teeth.
Tough to say really. In the end, it all comes down to sex for me. Oh I love a good or even decent storyline, but in the end, I watch porn to watch people fuck. Probably why I don't see as huge a difference between feature porn and gonzo porn like most others do. Generally speaking, for me, a feature is only as good as the sex in it. And to me, a good story doesn't have to take hours to tell, a great story maybe, but not a good one. To be honest, great storylines are few and far between in porn to me. I think feature gets itself in trouble trying to be something it's really not, which is why so many probably think they generally suck. Not sure Paul Thomas and John Leslie make the best contrast. Even though John probably shoots little to no feature porn these days, he's still regarded as one of the better feature directors even to this day. Does a feature director have to work harder than a gonzo director generally? Personally I think so. Feature directors are often saddled with contract stars who quite frankly can't act and who really don't want to fuck sometimes. A sex scene is generally only as hot as the woman in it. In that sense, I think feature directors hands tend to be tied more. Gonzo directors appear to generally have their pick of talent, and thus are less prone to bad pairings and bad scenes if they do their homework. If a feature directors top stars aren't strong, then their movies generally aren't going to be that good or memorable. When Paul has someone like a Savanna Samson or Jenna Jameson, or had someone like the now retired Janine or Cassidey, his movies tended to be stronger and hotter.

Are you kidding me? I'm warm, fuzzy, and honored. I'm just waiting for W.R. to offer me a decent non-sex part in one of his movies. Maybe I could play Death in Not the Seventh Seal: XXX. Most people would agree I've got the personality for it.
