Metro did do the first Double Disc, Double feature with Nothing to Hide part 3: Justine's Daughter and Nothing to Hide Part 4: Carnal Purgatory. The first themed double disc i.e. feature, game, double feature, black, bondage, gonzo etc. A real Double disc, not a movie with a sampler or a completely non-related “Bonus disc”. So hats off to them and I hope they do more. The more companies that push the envelope the better it is for the end users, and Adult DVD as a whole.

I'm confused.

How is Metro's double-double significant? I thought they simply released two older titles at the same time and sold them in the same package for 1 price. You get 2 movies on 2 DVDs with the Metro offering. Am I reading that right?

BTW, I haven't read everything about the AVN gaffe today. I suppose I should do so right now....

Mr Crawford, with all due respect, it doesn't matter who released the first double dvd porn movie. Those that believe Nothing To Hide 3 & 4 count, fine. Those that think My Plaything Jenna, fine. The Gate, fine. Appassionata, fine.

The important thing is how good the release is. Personally, I don't count NTH3&4 since each volume was released individually. I consider the MY:J as the first. I haven't seen The Gate (fingers crossed) but hopefully it'll be great. I'm researching the cast orgy's of Appassionata for a review later this week (maybe my old pal Astro will post a review and I can double check my educated guesses against his).

Just keep on making great dvd's and consider yourself fortunate that you have a good bunch of people working at Wicked.

Can I get an amen?

I agree.

ATTENTION ALL PORNO MAKING STUDIOS

The question is...we currently have for porn dvd..hundreds of garbage ass crappy looking single discs...now..we await the same fate for 2 discs as well.

Porn studios lack brain activity when making a good porno dvd with clean menus and crystal clear picture. I'm shocked Metro did a 2 disc set considering they made lots of their single titles without a navigating menu selection. Heck, they got balls.

But..before making a 2 disc set..will you please for god's sake re-release those crappy looking single titles first! After you fixed your single dvd library, then you work on stuff that you have experience with. Otherwise, you ain't proving shit by making a 2 disc set when you can't even make a good single disc set.

Sonic: Amen!

Seriously though, Metro has made some good releases. NTH 3&4 was very good-it got a 4.5 from me (and you all know how cheap I am with the higher ratings) Nothing To Hide 3&4

I also liked Zazel: Zazel

and Stop My Ass Is On Fire 2:
Stop My Ass Is On Fire 2

But yes, they generally make low budget, bargain basement releases. I wonder if Jeff and David are poking fun at one another over "who was first with a double dvd porn feature" though...

I just emailed David earlier today to congratulate Wicked on beating Evil Angel to a 2-disc release. (It's my fault, admittedly - got too involved in that whole pregnancy thing! to have time to get BUDA out first.)

Anyway, I don't think Metro's set counts because that's two movies. VCA could get together the Sorority Sex Kittens movies and call it a 4-disc set?

And My Plaything isn't a feature, it's a virtual sex game.

Appassionata? Somehow that escaped my radar. So when did the VHS of that come out?

Tricia, you should take comfort knowing that a great many Evil Angel dvd's have a lot more sex than any 3 disc's put out by many companies (longer times, better quality, etc). I like EA, Wicked, A&E and a few others just as much (in different ways) and y'all are the ones carrying the torch that so many companies drop at every chance.

I can't speak for the other companies, but I would never produce a DVD-18.
Two 9's are not much more expensive at all, the bigger case for 2 discs is a little more, but all in all, I'd rather spend a little more money.
I have a 5-DVD changer in my bedroom so that when I'm "in the moment", I don't have to get out of bed to change a DVD, so why would I want to get up to turn a DVD over?

Also, technically a DVD-18 is MUCH harder to replicate. 4 layers on one disc is asking a lot of a replicator.

Don- too funny. I only meant that I hadn't heard of it, and was wondering if it came out during my break from work a couple of months ago. I feel like I'm losing touch!

There are thousands of owners of the "300+ Sony Changers DVD Players" that turn the dvd for you and you don't have to get up.
I agree. DVD-18 is more expensive. I prefer two DVD 9s. Why? The artwork. I hate two sided discs. I admit..a DVD-18 is more convienient..but it's a pain in the arse if you have lousy uncleaniness habits.
Tricia..wanna kick ass a little more with that Buda release? Go to you local DVD store and pick up Gladiator. See that case? Nice isn't it?

But you know what? Being that I am so smart and I know how porn studios work when it comes to dvd (I know what they do to suck peoples money)..they will release their titles in 2 disc cases to give the impression of "Thickness" and since hundreds of pornsumers are "cows"..they are gonna say.."hmmm..thickness..it must be packed!"

David - quit being so humble

I don't think it really matters who did it first. What's significant is which studios are really trying to give the consumer more value for their dollar. There are studios claiming to push digital technology = all marketing talk and little to support their claims. And there are studios making real efforts to do more with DVD. We all know who these studios are.

I only pointed out AVN's article to show that all news sources need to depend on more than company press releases for their information.

Do you know what's really really really really really missing from porn DVDs? REAL multi-angles, with three or more SIMULTANEOUS camera angles to choose from. And maybe a PIP option, so we can see the dick going in/out AND the girl's face at the same time. THAT would rock.

I know both VCA (selected features) and Vivid (in Dyanna's interactive series) have 3 simultaneous, true multiple angles. Unfortunately, you're stuck with either a burned-in camera angle icon or a mandatory PIP window(s). It would be nice to be able to toggle these things on or off from the disc menu.

No I really do think that they deserve credit for their double feature.

DVD-18 - would like to do it, but agree with Tricia that cost would be an issue.

The bottom line is most of us are striving to put out the best possible product. I think that all of our hard work is really paying off and Adult DVD is better for it. We have some great ideas for some up coming projects and with the way people are turning out quality stuff I better get back to work.

My 2 cents is that, most of us know what a DVD-18,9,and 5 is, but not many consumers do, so even if you can squeeze your feature and bonus on to a DVD-9, the consumer would think he is getting more with two DVD-5s. So anyone would even think of producing a DVD-18 would be doing it just for the fact to say, "Look we did the first,(and most likely the last)one." Proven here by a debate of who did the first 2 disk set, rather then whose two disc set has the best content. Its like rushing out a animation bug movie to say your the first, even though the other movie is better.

Ah. Can you give me at least ONE example? Never saw it, but I suppose that BEE GEES - ONE NIGHT ONLY is Anamorphic Fullscreen. Why? Cuz I just passed in front of a store that was showing this DVD on a series of TVs - and only one of em was a 16:9. The image was fullscreen in all the sets, but there was obviously more information on the sides of the 16:9.
I'm not only In Brazil: I live in Rio de Janeiro, about 20 minutes from the beach.

I had the opportunity to be the guide of Al Borda, Max Hardcore and, later, Hustler's Evan Wright when they came to Rio, and showed 'em all the bootiest places around.

Kewl. I have Evil Dead 2 in that nice tin edition. BTW, that's a nice stretch: a porn in a tin edition!
Okay, but do a checkup first. I've tired of dragging tourists with faint hearts to the hospital. They just drop like flieswhen they see the combination butt+g-string. Weird.

My way of thinking is different. I hate the tins..I don't own one. I don't like em because they look horrible near my DVD library and..the DVD inside the tin is not held, it's in a jewel case floating around.

? I assume because it's a stunning piece of scenery right? So they faint? Damn..you're killing me Planet Sex. I am not thinking about anal sex..but doggystyle and those bodacious cheeks making waves and I am surfing from behind!

Do the chicks go crazy over Americans? I know that in some countries the girls go nuts over different types of male races. Hence Santo Domingo..my friend told me that if I head over there..I immediately can get laid.

Nah, they're not "floating around", there's a nice place to fit 'em in. Plus, they look EXPENSIVE, and that makes my DVD collection looks more posh that it really is...
Scenery? Scenery? I don't know, in the summer all the scenic view is obscured by the shadow of the butts.
Now that you mentioned, bring a rope and those red things that the people at Baywatch carry around. Some butts are so large, you'll need safety measures for the ride.
Dude, it doesn't matter if you're american, japanese, german or an albino monk from Abu Dhabi. All you have to do is wave a 100-dollar bill. They'll come, and so do you.

But... with $ 100 you can bang 24 girls from Vila Mimosa, a.k.a. "The Whorror-House". Not that you SHOULD, of course. A friend of mine got a blowjob from one of em, and 12 hours later his cock went all green. I kid you not.

Brace yourself: some kind of fungus that spread all over his dick while he was sleeping! All he needed was some medicinal lotion, but think about that: if a girl makes a guy's dick green with her MOUTH, what other kind of diseases does she carry in other parts of her body?

When in Rio, use a condom. Or else....

There is actually no valid reason for this to exist. DVD is essentially a 4:3 format. What is done with an anamorphic DVD is rather than actually storing the black bars for letterboxing on the disc in order to make the widescreen ratio image to fit into a 4:3 format, they actually squeeze the picture horizontally to fit it into the 4:3 format. That is why if you are watching an anamorphic DVD on a 4:3 TV, but your DVD player is set for a 16:9 TV, everything on the picture looks tall & skinny.

When the DVD player is properly set up of a 4:3 TV, it will build the essentially squeeze the picture vertically to put it back into the proper aspect ratio, and builds the black bars on top & bottom.

In order to do an anamorphic version of a fullscreen title, they would have to actually put black bars on the right & left of the 4:3 image to build a 16:9 image, and then squeeze it back to 4:3 to put it onto the DVD. When Decoding it, a widescreen TV would handle it properly, but wouldn't produce a better picture than if the image hadn't squeezed anamorphically in the first place.

Where the problem would exist is that a DVD player set to 4:3 would see that this was an anamorphic disc, and actually build black bars on top & bottom. Anyone watching this on a 4:3 TV would end up seeing a small picture in the middle of the screen, surrounded by black bars on all 4 sides (right & left stored on the DVD, and top & bottom built by the DVD player.

On top of that, it is more expensive to make an anamorphic DVD than an non-anamorphic (at least it was when DVD was introduced, that may have changed).

Evil Dead 2 has anamorphic 4x3 supplements. In 16 x 9 (squeeze on a 4x3 tv) mode a tv will show the 4x3 material undistorted in the center of the screen. If you switch the player to 4x3 and the tv to 4x3, then the image will fill the screen undistorted like normal.

I think this works like some menus work, where the 4x3 material is recorded at full resolution but there's actually a wider resolution file being played. The stuff that's wider than the 4x3 on 4x3 tv is not seen, whereas on a 16x9 tv it is all seen.

Wasn't this how dvd's were originally concepted. I've never seen one actually do it. the idea was to encode a 16x9 image at the resolution height of 4x3, this way a 4x3 image could be pan-n-scanned in real-time from the 16x9 image, or you could watch it letterboxed of course. I guess this tech hasn't really worked out all that well, but it would give people the most options and only encode the movie once on the disc.

Wait, wait, wait... not ALL Rio girls are toxic hazards! This particular case happened in Vila Mimosa , and if you see the place, you'll understand. Vila Mimosa is the place where the old hookers go to die. It is, literally, a WAREHOUSE filled with old, beaten-up, drug-addicted hookers. Some of em look a lot like Izma from Emperor's New Groove . And those are the cute ones.

If that is the case, then this is the first disk that I have heard of utilizing the "Pan & Scan on the fly" process. Yes this was an original concept of DVD, but apparently, it doesn't work too well when the pan & scan has to move (as it would when there were a conversation between two people on opposite sides of the screen). I don't think that is actually allows for panning (moving the camera across the screen rather than just cutting from one side to the other) either.

This methodology is actually interesting. But, other than the fact that someone who was watching the movie on a 16:9 TV doesn't have to change the TV mode when going from the movie to the extras, I still don't see the advantage to doing this. If the DVD player were set to 4:3 letterbox instead of 4:3 full screen, the postage stamp picture that I described would occur. I would think that this would be very confusing to a 4:3 viewer than a switch from an anamorphic movie to non-anamorphic extras would be to a 16:9 viewer. However, it the Pan & Scan on the fly process worked better and was used more often, I could see how this process might work well.

Bill,
I watched American Beauty on DVD a few months back and part of the supplementary section looked weird on my 4:3 television. The movie itself was o.k. in a letterboxed image but when I got to the full-screen 'making of' featurette, the picture appeared to be squeezed inwards at the sides. This was particularly noticeable whenever Steven Spielberg appeared on screen and yet other clips appeared perfectly normal. All of the menu settings were correct on my Pioneer DVD player, so I can only guess that it was related to the anamorphic encoding. Any suggestions as to the possible cause of this problem?

This was the Region 2 version by the way, but the content should be identical to the Region 1 disc.

I don't know. Was the picture completely filling the screen, or were there black bars on hte side. If there ware black bars, maybe it is what Planet Sex and I were discussing. If that's the case, and you still have the DVD, try switching the DVD setting back and forth between 4:3 letterbox and 4:3 full screen to see if anything looks different. If it does look different from one mode to the other, then it is anamorphic with the Pan & Scan on the fly option utilized.

My other guess is that maybe the interview portion was filmed in 16:9 in anticipation of a widscreen 'making-of' that never took place.

I haven't seen American Beauty on DVD, so I can't tell you what was on the Region 1 version.

Bill,
The image did fill the screen and the level of distortion varied from one shot to the next. It was a rental disc so I don't have a copy anymore to try out. My DVD player is currently set to 4:3(letterbox) and I believe that I did test American Beauty at 4:3(pan & scan) without any obvious difference. Changing the setting to 16:9 only produced an even greater vertical stretching of the picture, as expected.I think your theory about it being shot in 16:9 is the most likely.

I understand what Planet Sex was referring to regarding the menu screens on certain titles. All the Anchor Bay DVDs I own have 16:9 menus which appear cropped with picture missing from the sides on a 4:3 set. If I view the same discs on my laptop, I can see the entire image. Deep Red and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie are two examples which spring to mind.
