Has anyone else encountered being forced to sign-in on Google just to read posts?

Sure, you've always had to be registered and signed-in to make posts. But, starting yesterday, 10/2/06, when I would attempt to go to boards I always visit (just to read posts, see what's new), I would be re-directed to the "you must be registered/signed-in to complete the previous action" page.

I don't like this at all.
In fact, I'm wondering if this has something to do with the government's desire to gather information on everyone's Internet habits?

FYI, I always clear my web-tracks (history, cookies, etc.) after every session with the Internet. There are very few cookies, such as ADT, that I protect and allow to remain on my computer. So, you can tell I'm a bug about trying to keep some measure of personal privacy... or at least not making it easy for "them" to build large data trails based on cookies remaining in my system over long periods of time.

Any thoughts or comments?
Has anyone else experienced this new Google phenomenon?

I don't use Google, but maybe they are tracking on their system what you look at to sell profiles to advertisers?

Is this specifically related to their usenet features? If you're reading an adults-only newsgroup they might require a login.

that safesearch is a pain in the ass. I haven't found a way to abolish it in firefox

If they’re profiting from your time to register then they should give you something for it just for the hassle.

Couldn't they track your activities anyways with your IP address?

They also fought harder than others to keep privacy, so why would they do this before it was required?

The images of forced sign-ins gives me wood.

I'd guess that they are looking to add personalized news feed reader services and/or alerts of some sort based on the content of the newsgroups a user frequents. They are all about personalizing the user experience and making it easier for their advertisers to target people who might be interested in whatever they are pitching.

Things seem to be back to normal again.

The Google groups now have an entirely new look to them.
I'm guessing the sign-in thing was a temporary by-product of the transition process (let's hope :)
