i think adt should have a 3rd icon on the left-hand side of the forum view that indicates which threads i have posted in. i become so reliant on those in other forums & i always wondered why adt didnt have it because it is probably the best run one ive been on. thoughts?

Sure it can be done, fairly easily too. I don't really use other forums so I've never thought about adding it.

What should the icon be?

Just a thought: you could show the existing yellow and purple folders as opened, or perhaps opened with a sheet of paper inside.

How about opened folders for threads you've read before, and opened folders with paper for threads you've posted in?

On the subject of forum features: is there any chance of getting RSS feeds on posts from specific members, as we now have them on forums and threads?

So basically an rss feed of forum search results by member name?

I'm thinking that I'll change the paper icon that's in the column to the right of the yellow/purple folder to be the indicator for weather someone has posted in the thread or not. We don't really use that column for anything in particular any more. Might as well make it usefull.

Pretty much, yeah. With that added to the feeds we already have available, I'd never need to use the forum index again.
I know I'm being lazy. But it'd improve my stalking efficiency tremendously.

I generally read the forum through Google's Newsreader now.

I plan to add an RSS version of the search results. So it will be covered. Not sure when I'll get to it though.

It is generally a modified thread icon, of course a different one for one with new posts and those without.

I was just looking at the forum going, "What the fuck are those little red dots? Or is it time for bed?"

I think I am going to like this.

Thanks Drew.

I was trying for subtle, yet obvious. Maybe the red is too much?

you can do better than a red dot drew, it looks very 1985!

i think the reason it looks clunky to me is if you see how detailed the paper icon is with the shading - then on top of that there is this rudimentary red dot.

I like it, now that I figured it out, like Redish I was trying to figure out what the fuck was up with the red dots, I figured I'd been playing too many video games.

Thanks, but that 1985 thing is exactly the look I was aiming for. I tried to give the paper icon a mullet but it's hard working on such a small scale and I'm not very good with Photoshop.

It's a handy feature but the dot looks dumb.

Why not just change the entire page red or blue or something like that?

According to Wikipedia the internet did exist back then
I remember when Mosaic came out and was such a big deal and that was no where near 85 (early 90s?) and I believe that was the first graphical web browser. So I guess back in 85 the red dot would look like this: .

I guess I've been meaning to ask this stupid question for a long time, but never bothered. Before the red dot, it looks to me like that same paper icon was in front of every thread. What is it supposed to signify?

I wasn't asking what the red dot meant, I was asking what the one without the red dot meant. The only answer I saw when reviewing the thread again was Drew saying "We don't really use that column for anything in particular any more." What did it used to be?

If you look at this thread for instance you can see a bunch of them in the upper left hand corner of the posts where the paper icon is now on each post.

While the internet did exist in 1985 -- heck, the Arpa/Darpanet was started in the late 60s -- the web did not come to exist until well after that. Tim Berners-Lee first proposed HTTP (the web's transport mechanism) in 1991.

So, there really couldn't be a "web page" from 1985.

Mosaic was released in 1992.

Those were the days. :-)

When we first started the ADT forum back in 99 it was running on UBB. UBB had options for posters to pick from various icons when starting a topic. When we switched away from UBB we wrote a conversion program that brought the old icons over into the new database. (UBB didn't use a database, it was flat-file-based.) However, I never thought the icon selection from UBB was very useful and tended to clutter things up.

re: the red dot. I threw a red dot on it because I really don't know how to use Photoshop. It's simple and effective, like a good kick to the nuts.

Red Dots are fine. In fact, in South Carolina "Red Dots" have a special meaning. Every liquor store here has a red dot on the outside.

"Section 61-3-1000. Every retail dealer shall maintain a separate store or place of business with not more than two means of public ingress or egress which must be on the front or the same side of the building except that the doors may be located at the corner of two adjacent sides of the building. One additional door, not in the front, is allowed to be used solely for the receipt of commercial deliveries and as an emergency exit. Red dots not exceeding thirty-six inches in diameter may be placed on each side of the building and on the rear and front of the building.

Sounds stupid at first, but it makes them easy to find.

And not that this is an issue, but if you look at the forum by typing www.adultdvdtalk.com/forum/active.asp the red dots don't show up.

One odd thing is seeing the red dot on threads that I posted in x months ago but that are still being kept active (some of the individual performer threads in the Star Crossed forum for example). It occurred to me that dots differently coloured according to how long ago was one's own last post in the thread would be a useful embellishment. I'm just throwing this out as a random thought: I'm definitely not putting it forward as a suggestion (I realise it would be considerably more work). It was just a thought I felt like sharing. Just a thought.
