I've been back for a couple of weeks now from my trip to the Czech Republic and today was my first day shooting back in the states again. Let me tell you what happened....(this could be a long post so bear with me)

The first girl of the day called to say that she was sick and couldn't come. We made a few calls and replaced her... with another girl who didn't show up. Okay. I gave up on that scene. We'll make it up on another day when our luck is better. I still had 2 girl on 1 guy scene to shoot in the afternoon.
The "agent" calls and says he hasn't heard from girl#1 in few days. We try to replace her while we call girl#2 to make sure that she's still coming. It turns out that girl#1 and girl#2 are roomates and that girl#1 stole girl#2's car leaving girl#2 unable to get herself to the shoot. We offer to pick her up. She comes up with another excuse and cancels outright.
Through the grace of whatever deity approves of porn, we managed to find two COMPLETELY different girls who were available and did indeed show up. As it turns out, the two girls were Jennifer Luv and Fallon so it seems that all's well that ends well but kindly note how much drama was involved just to shoot ONE SCENE!!!

Contrast that against my recent experience in Prague. Aside from being stuck in Germany for 4 days because no one told me that Canadian Citizens need a Visa to enter the Czech Republic (a book-length post unto itself!!), once I arrived in Prague my days pretty much followed this routine: Wake up at 8, take a shower and a handful of Aspirin to counteract the previous evening of stunt drinking. At 8:50am the makeup artist arrives. At 9am, 4 or 5 of the best looking girls I have ever seen in my life are delivered to the location where we are both living and shooting. By 10am I am shooting my first scene. By noon I am on to my second scene. By 3pm I am on to my 3rd scene and by 5pm I am once again drinking and marvelling at how completely miraculous this country is.
Every girl is a blur. Each day was simply a new delivery of random euro-chicks even better looking than the day before. They never complained. They never gave anybody any attitude of any kind. They were on time, actually they were EARLY some days!!!! and they were ready to work. The worst thing that I can say about any of them is that they smoke more than California during fire season. One cancer tube after the other. It's very possible that I now have emphysema. Also, when the camera turns off, so do they but when the camera is rolling these girls don't hold back. Buy anything from any company that says "shot in prague" on the box.

When I think about the fact that we paid less money to shoot these pieces of European perfection willing to do anything we asked of them than we've previously paid to shoot some crack whore from Arkansas with a page full of rules I feel quite foolish. I see no need to ever shoot in the U.S again. In 12 days of shooting in Prague we didn't have a SINGLE girl flake or show up late!!! America is the greatest country on earth except when it comes to providing reliable females for smut vids.

Prague itself is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. A perfect combination of history and modernity. Everything and anything you could ever want is there. I was fascinated by the fact that in one very upscale part of the city I saw a brothel, a casino and a department store all on the same block!!! You won't find that in Idaho or Kentucky. I suspect that within the next ten years or so that Prague will top Paris and Italy as the "must-see" part of Europe.

Beautiful girls who have perfect breasts without boob jobs. No stretch marks or disfiguring childbirth evidence and who do anything and everything as well as show up on time....NOT the San Fernando Valley.

Go to Prague. Go to Prague now!

Can I consult you before visiting next year? I don't want to shoot porn, I just want to have a good time!

Although, you say "crack whore from Arkansas" like it's a bad thing

Good old Praha - I've always thought it was one of the must-see parts of Europe, Western, Eastern or otherwise. It's got a pretty mad nightlife scene as well, and the people are very friendly!

Dammit Quaze, quit rubbing it in! Just kidding bro, I'm glad you had a great time and got some footage of them Czech cuties in action. I hope to see some of them myself when I visit Prague sometime in January and I have a feeling I'm gonna need plenty of condoms if all goes well.

Quaze, I am so pleased you liked our part of Europe!

There is so much bullshit-talk about Eastern Europe. About car thieves, poverty only, socialist blocks only, people with not work ethics etc. It's all bullshit!

I hope you do come back for some more highly porn-charged Slavic beauties soon!

Mike Quasar ,You should do all your next shootings in Eastern Europe .For a director it is necessary that the girls were on time ,ready to work and willing to do anything .

One problem is that many of these girls never turn it back on. It takes more than a flexible hole to turn in a good scene. Sometimes I like to see a little emotion and every now and again see a girl seem to be enjoying whatever circus act she's performing.

Too much of the hooker mentality I guess.

I am not sure wheter you know what you talk about, really. I am however 100% certain that Quaze does know how the talent was he worked with. Because HE ACTUALLY worked with this girls.

I dont think it makes sense to talk about prejudices concerning Euro-porn and Euro-girls. And them being just <a flexible hole> is one recurring element of that prejudice. I wish you could once be on a set with Euro-girls, or even actually fuck one - that might change your mind!

Mike Quasar and others,

I bet a lot of the Eastern European women showed up on time, and with no complaints, because they think working for an American company in Prague will be their ticket to America, their ticket out of Eastern Europe (is it?). If I was one of them, I'd do like they did. I've gotten the impression from some of Shameless's posts that the Ukrainian women he has signed up sometimes assume that they will soon be working in Los Angeles.

In the US, roughly what percentage of actresses fail to show up on time, or not at all? I've gotten the idea that it happens, but have no idea how often.

I was truly expecting some godforsaken Soviet labor camp-type of place where everyone was depressed and desperate. I was clearly misinformed. Parts of the city reminded me of Toronto. Very clean. Even the streetcars are the same color. Keep in mind that I never visited the "bad" part of Prague but I'm guessing that it's no worse than the "bad" part of LA or any other major U.S city.

As for the names of some of the girls - I may have some of them wrong so forgive me - Angelica, Sandy Sayle,Jessica Fiorentino, Sarah Blue, Sharka.....many others.

We also shot the glorious Lea Demae for the next No Holes Barred and perhaps God's most perfect creation, a girl who calls herself Dark Angel..or maybe it's Angel Dark. Either way, she's a perfect specimen of female. I looked very hard for flaws and came up empty. She graces the cover of Ass Cleavage 3.

To an unnattached male with some disposable income Prague is indeed close to paradise. To a married man like myself who lives vicariously through the penis of others, it's still a pretty awesome place.

Lately, it seems like 50%. 25% who show up late and the other 25% don't show up at all or show up with an expired test or no I.D.

As far as Eastern European girls hoping to come work in LA, like the song says "I wish they all could be California girls" :) There is always plenty of work here for them if they do come. Hell, I'm pretty sure that Monica Sweetheart has made enough money here to BUY eastern Europe.

It's hard to comprehend the difference between the economies of the West, and Eastern Europe. In spite of fairly robust infrastructure (by world-wide standards), the amount of money the average Eastern European has in their pocket is stunningly low. When I was doing work in the former Eastern Block earlier this year I was able to hire skilled technical and professional help for pennies on the dollar , and I'm sure I was paying an inflated "tourist rate".

If market forces allowed domestically produced porn to pay women the equivellent of 1-2 months professional wages (let's say $4k-$8K) per scene, I'm sure both the physical caliber and reliablity of the women would rise commensurately. It seems unlikely this will happen any time soon.

"Flaking" is endemic in the business, and prospect of being left hanging by talent lurks on nearly every porn set. When I used to shoot magazine lay outs I never got stood up, but even still I always felt a sense of relief when the model actually showed up.

Conversly, nearly every query I get for my current project stresses words like "reliable" and "amenable". Can you imagine a "ligit" actress assuring the producer that if selected for a role she would actually show up?

Hi Frigo, I leave for the Czech Republic on Monday, January 5 and plan to stay at least a week if not longer. I not only want to visit Prague but a few other places around the country as I've never been to that part of the world before. It would be great if I could run into you but I don't know if I'll still be there by the time you arrive. In any case, I hope you have a wonderful time on your journey to the Mecca of Porn!

The issue isn’t whether the girls are hot in person, or would show me a real good time when next I went to Prague, but instead how they across to me when watching a video. I’m not the first to have noticed that a high percentage of euro girls come across fairly unemotional on-screen.

This could be simply cultural; maybe Prague is simply more reserved than I’m used to. Maybe there’s more “go with the flow” and less initiative: they’re just waiting to be told what position is next. Language could be an issue. And maybe more of the girls finding their way to porn are hardened prostitutes.

There are plenty of girls in US porn that can’t emote and there are certainly many Eastern girls who seem to get into their scene (Quaze says he shot Jessica Fiorentino, and she usually gets into it – I’ll especially look forward to that scene). But for whatever reason the Eastern girls seem more prone to “working their way down the checklist of circus acts”.

To name names, two girls who are/were quite popular but seem to usually lack expressiveness are Danielle Rush and Julie Silver. They seem(ed) able to perform with ease what acts the scene calls for but never really seem to get into it or get off on it. They never fail to perform but never seem to get excited.

“flexible hole” is really a jab at fans, not the girls: a lot of fans seem to hold in high on their lists whoever has the most flexible holes, without having any other fantasy to fulfill. It’s a little shallow if the only reason you can name for having a girl as your favorite is that she did three double anals in a scene last week.

Shooting in Prague is a good thing and I have no problem there – Quaze should be able to avoid many of the disfigurements that plague the US girls. But I think extra effort may be needed to get the girl to be expressive in scenes. Smile at the guy in the scene, be a little playful: it’s about acting and not merely going through the paces.

Since Quaze does not seem to answer that fast: As far as I know, Prague charges about half the price of the Porn Valley. Budapest is said to be a bit more expensive than Prague, but still cheap. In Kiev, 1000km further east, you should get it for about a quarter the US going rate. Moscow again, would be a bit more expensive than Kiev (about 10-25%), but still a lot cheaper than in Cali.

To jrv, perhaps by now you've seen me make my point in other threads, but yes, some girls go on auto pilot wherever porn movies are shot, and Eastern Europe is no exception. That's why I always stress that to see the girls NOT be on cruise control, it is important to watch the "right" movies. I don't want to really name names here in a negative way, but once you've seen enough titles, you can figure out which directors and actors are able to get good performances out of certain talent, and which ones fail.

There ya go! My thoughts exactly. Talent is only part of the picture in porn. Direction and camerawork are just as important so as to make the most of the talent that is there.

Hmmm, I think you haven't got the right impression of Eastern Europe. Well, I have to say I seperate the more ... western eastern countries *lol* (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary) from the countries which are... even more eastern *g* (e.g. Russia, Ukraine or even Romania).

The Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary will join the EU pretty soon - and their economy is rising much faster than ours here in Germany, for example. Out in the rural parts of the country, people still don't have much - but it's completely different in the big cities. Prague, for example, is a pulsating metropolis (as well as Budapest) and doesn't have to hide behind cities like Berlin or Paris.

So, I would say, the girls LIKE to live in Prague or the Czech Republic in general and they don't necessarily think (or want) that their porn shoot for a US company is their ticket to America. As far as I know, they have normal lifes, normal jobs & many even have boyfriends who don't know about what their girls are doing. They just do porn to get some extra money.

Oh - and something else... I don't want to offend anybody in here, but I think (too) many American's think that people from Europe (especially Eastern Europe) would like to live in the US. Well, for me I can say I would never ever want to live in the USA - and many people I know don't as well. What do I find in the USA when I move there? A crazy Texas Cowboy who thinks he is the king of the world, high unemployment rates, high crime rates and the rate, how many people are killed by guns per year in the USA should be in the Guiness Book of Records (yes, I have seen Bowling for Columbine *hehe*). And I won't even mention the death row or laws in some states which say that certain sexual positions are forbidden - and you say America is a free country!? So, it's a fairytale, that so many people would like to live in America if they could, in my opinion.

And now I stop typing, b4 I get even more political ;-)

That may be the heart of the matter. An American direct (I'll designate Quaze an "honorary" American) is going to have a harder time communicating with a lot of the Eastern girls than he would with a girl back home.

Mike Quasar,

In regards to Maniac's post above, were you able to find out how many of the actresses you worked with were originally from Prague, or from the Czech countryside, or from other parts of Eastern Europe? Could you tell if they were doing porn films on a full time basis, or just part-time, and keeping this hidden from family or boyfriends, etc? Or was the lack of English on their part just too much of an obstacle to overcome, to have any sort of meaningful conversation?

Maniac, I was hoping that someone who works in the porn industry, either in Europe or the US, would have posted by now to refute what I said in my post yesterday, but I see I will have to wait some more. An insider like this would have a better picture of what is going on, compared to either you or myself.

It was difficult to communicate with some of the girls but most spoke enough english to understand what we were asking of them. Also, the guys we used spoke english pretty well (even Mark Wood!) and pretty much drove the scene where it needed to go.

Most of the girls were from Czech. Some I gather opted for Slovakian nationality during that whole "fall of communism" thing and lived in Slovakia but made the journey.

I understand that not everyone in the world wants to live in the U.S. but many do DESPITE the rampant gun violence, poverty and unemployment. Personally I'd rather be poor or unemployed here than any other place on earth. Also it's my opinion that Michael Moore should move to Canada. I'll swap passports with him.

As for America being a land led by a Texas cowboy, when terrorists fly airplanes into YOUR buildings, you might be wishing you had a Texas cowboy in your corner. Just my opinion of course.

I'm gonna stop now before I get too political too :)

Back to porn. Something we can all agree on.

This is a very interesting discussion evolving here: All I can say from an Ukrainian/Russian point of view is, that INDEED most of my girls do dream about working on a porn set in USA instead of Ukraine. They do earn already very good money compared to averge wages here, but in the US they would earn about 4 times more per scene. Also a lot of them do somehow dream to meet a future husband there opening them the door to a life without material hardship.

Work ethics, once people here know that they are payed good+in time+and in cash+and in $$$$ (as opposed to Hryvnias or Rubles) are really great - not only in porn.
I cannot immagine how it is even possible to work under conditions when 50% of your actresses flake...not talking about all those fake boobs, large tattoos, non-do-acts etc.

Maniac,

You're about as misinformed about the U.S. as most of the U.S. is about Europe.

Most European's I've talked to that the come here say they love it. About the only thing they don't like is the people, because of the culture clash and arrogance of Americans.

Their is a great deal more freedom in America than in many European nations barring a few notable exceptions. Not to mention bringing up stupid things like sex laws is pretty lame given that most European nations have laws just as stupid, if not stupider, regarding taxation and regulation of taxation and commerce.

Some benefits in America, that often don't exist in Europe. No need to carry papers to go from one state to the next. Easy to obtain a job without having to be over-educated for a position. Can wander America at any time of the day or night and always find a store open in just about any part of the country. Cheap material goods easily accessible by anyone. And Hollywood baby, hollywood. This is where all the big budget films find financing. Alot of love about America.

OK, you're right in some points and in some you're not. You don't find open stores 24/7, 7 days a week. But that's a lot better now, because law's were changed again recently. Oh, and many gas stations are opened all the time - and they kinda have little supermarkets as their shops, so if you really need something, it's no prob over here, too ;-)

Something that really pisses me off here is, that too many people in Germany seem to have no problems paying prices that are far beyond imagination, especially for US products, like Levi's Jeans (about 120-150EUR each!!!) and even worse... A Big Mac's 2,70EUR, which is about 3,20$ at the moment! That's right, we pay 3,20 for ONE f***in' Big Mac *geez*

OK, but the other things you mentioned - I don't have to carry papers to go from one state to the next. I can even go to all EU member countries without tourist Visa's and nowadays I don't even need a traveller's passport. Prostitution is legal over here (and we don't have higher crime rates or a more alienated youth over here because of that *hehe*). You won't get arrested for every fucking thing you do, you're allowed to drink beer with 16, and when you're 18 you can buy every kind of alcohol you want.

And talking about job's. Well, our unemployment rates are not the best - but you don't have to have 2 or 3 jobs to get your family thru. You don't lose your job as easy as in the USA (if you want to fire someone you have to have reason's for it, and you can't fire him/her from one day to another). Oh, and when you break your leg, for example and you have to go to the hospital - you pay nothing over here... but sadly that will change pretty soon, I guess. Anywayz - the prices for medicine in the USA are three times higher than over here, and you have to pay everything by yourself, afaik (over here your health insurance pays a part of it). That's a scandal for me - paying so much for things you NEED.

One thing we're not as free as the USA is everything concerning guns. You have to have a fire arm license (which you only get when you're in need of a gun - for example when you're member of some shooting sport club - but afaik you don't get one, just because you want it), and even with that your identity is triple checked when you want to buy a gun and you can only buy sport weapons. You won't be able to buy MP's or something like that at all - and thanks 2 god for that. How can you sell weapons for everyone at every corner and ammunition at the supermarket? And then you're astonished about the high gun murder rate *doh*

And last but not least we don't bomb countries to "free the people" - who never asked for it. Oh, sorry - of course the Iraq has chemical and biological mass destruction weapons... which the USA couldn't show us until today. And I thought the US government learned something out of Vietnam.

OK, but now:

Porn really unites people all over the world, no matter how different their opinions are ;-) P*F*P - PORN FOR PEACE *lol*

When I made my original post about porn actresses wanting to come to the US to work, I figured that is because they can make twice as many dollars per sex scene here, compared to Eastern Europe. Even if they only work 1 year in this country, the money can add up. Plus, they could get a lot of exposure to American porn fans in person, which would really help their careers.

I did not mean to imply they want to settle here permanently, or that they want to leave their home countries, all things being equal.

I am not going to get into the argument of which is a better place to live, Europe or the US. Advantages and disadvantages to both places.

In regards to where the girls are really from (assuming that if a movie is made in Prague, the girls are Czech or Slovakian), I just watched "Rocco invades Poland", which is supposed to be all about Rocco finding lovely Polish women to film. In the second scene with a blonde woman named Agnes, he asks her in English what the Polish word for 'beautiful' is. She says in good English that she doesn't know. At the very end of the scene, he asks her where is she really from. She admits that she comes from Rostov. Rocco seems fine with this.

And I did, too; I initially figured that Rostov must be in Poland. But then, I went and looked at a map, and this city is located 900 miles (about 1200 km) southeast of Warsaw. Agnes isn't Polish, she's Russian! So much for a film about lovely Polish women. At least Agnes was very good in her scene.

If someone like Rocco, who lives and works in Eastern Europe, can be fooled about where a woman is really from, what about an American company that just goes to Prague or Budapest for a couple of weeks to shoot films there.

In New York City, that would be a good deal. Even in the rest of the country, that price discrepancy is not nearly as great as your Levi's example.
Neither do the majority of people living in the US. However, unlike 25 years ago, both parents now work in a typical household. To some extent, this is because things that used to be considered a luxury are now considered necessities by people. Expensive family vacations are now the norm. Driving to the mountains for a week of camping used to be considered a family vacation. Now a family vacation is a $5000 week in Disney World.

There are many examples of this type of thinking (new car vs. used car, people on welfare with cable TV, etc...)

Other than a company downsizing for economic reasons, this is the same in the US. In most businesses, firing someone is a difficult thing to do.
Most people in the US get their medical insurance through their employer. For the most part, the public has themselves to blame for the high cost of medical care. We've become lawsuit crazy in the US. It's not uncommon for the cost of malpractice insurance to be more than the doctor makes.
It doesn't work that way in the US either. The biggest problem is that the gun laws are at the state level. Therefore, people who live in states with strict gun laws can typically by them in states with weaker gun laws (the posession of those guns will be illegal in their home state, but they have a gun that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to buy.

Sorry , what was this thread about again ?

Oh , the overall joys of Eurobabes . Good luck with the releases Quasar , are these going to be all Euro versions of some current series ? You know , like Ass Cleavage 3 : Deep in the Old Country .

PS: just couldn't resist getting my oar in - the British and Italian governments supported Bush , against the wishes of most of their people .

Hi Quaze,

could luck with the Italians. They were on our (the German) side the last time we fought a war but then they made up their minds. They are not very reliable, you know. And first of all we had to fight their war (in Africa) anyway. Ask Montgomery or Rommel what they think about Italian soldiers. Do you know the titles of the three shortest books in Europe: "Polish Honesty", "German Humor" and "Italian War Heroes".

No, honestly. Not every German agrees with the current government about the support of the US in Iraq. I for one would give my left arm for getting away with these fucking communists as soon as yesterday!

Thanks, and keep the porn from Europe coming.

Well, this thread is about to be locked. But I'll reiterate that my only point originally was that East European girls often don't exhibit a lot of emotion, as seen by Americans, and this may well be due to any number of cultural issues and expectations, as well as communications issues.

I also wonder if there is a "selection effect" here: perhaps American directors wind up casting a higher percentage of full-time prostitutes in Prague than they wind up with in the US. I'd have no idea if this is so, or if this makes any difference.

As for the girls wanting to move to the US: I would guess that the prospects in Prague don't seem so bad any more. But ten years ago it might not have seemed so risky to make a move compared with staying at home. Rocco shot some porn in East Europe at that time but I don't know of many Americans who did.

This is an incredibly futile argument going on here. Fair enough, you could perhapd compare say Prague and Los Angeles or whatever but this has degenerated into 'which continent is better?'
Personally both continents seem to have some attractive sounding hotspots that are 'close to paradise' and all of them seem to be depressingly far away from my house in Grimsby (stinks of fish, two oil refineries and a beach covered in mud) so the answer is for you all to dig deep in your pockets and rustle up enough money for me to go on a transcontinental sex and culture tour at the end of which I will pronounce the winner (if I can still type)

Somehow this thread became a United Nations security council session. Anyhoo...

As far as the series are concerned, we're gonna mix and match a little. Ass Cleavage 3 - half was shot in Prague, the rest we're shooting here. Grand Theft Anal - 4 of 6 scenes shot in Prague etc.

hardware puts on moderator hat...

I'm not inclined to lock it just yet, but let's stop the tirades about other people's governments. Nobody here can do anything about that and I'm sure most of us would rather read about the hot babes in Prague anyway.

Dammit Quaze, didn't you get Claudia Jammson or Niki Blond? I knew I should have gone over myself!

OK I was going to let this pass but I had so many discussions about this with my friends since the first trip that I took to Europe (I been there 4 times) that maybe I need a deferent opinion on the matter. But this is IMOP is what I see.
Freedoms: In Europe it seems you have more social freedoms in America you have more Humanity freedoms.
What I mean by this is I feel more free in Europe, don’t have to worry about a drink in my hands on the street going from one restaurant to another (Vages style), I can drink passed 1:45 in a club, I don’t have to worry about J walking and on and on. Here in the US if I park in Malholland to look at the stars passed sunset they (police) want to arrest me, if I drive up street twice looking for parking I get ticked and Burbank for get about it! I know there are reasons for laws just to many over here I think. This is going to be hard for me to write, I am not a writer by no means but I will try. What I mean By we have more Humanity is I have a right as a human being in this country to disagree with my own country and not worry about getting the crap bet out me by the police. The police and government have to respect my personal being, I did not feel this over there. The police were nicer over there but I was told not to make them mad because they could beat the crap out me and I could not do a thing about it.
As far as Europe’s wanting to move here and Americans wanting to move there, which I found out a lot, have. I not sure but I will tell you this, the women I feel in love with and her me had a big problem! She did not want to live in America and she was here for 6 months! She went so far as to find me a job there so I would move there with her. OK I didn’t want to move there either I am and will always be 100% American, I would die for this country! So what to do, Well I will live there 6 months a year and she will live here 6 months Hmm I guess I get the best of both worlds. And you will get a lot more Euro Babes!!!
What strikes me funny about Germany, France and every one else that complains about us being in the war is, that each one tried to take over the medal east themselves and failed! So why are they so mad that we are there! Oh wait let me see we are there and they are … not. I wish I could tell you about the difference in the news there and here I was there for 2 months last time during the war watching there CNN WoW what all governments tell and don’t tell you! I think it’s about much more then oil or freeing the people although these are good points alone but take a look at a Globe one time and look were it’s at and then tell me why every country wants this desert not just for the oil in imop.
Let me get back on track as far as this tread goes. I filmed the Euro babes and they didn’t all stop f*cking when I stopped shooting the camera and sometimes stayed and keep on going after the pop shot, on the same note I had US girls stop as soon as the camera stop rolling so I think it’s on a girl by girl basses. As far as how flaky girls get here I agree 100% with Mike Q man it sucks!!! I just can’t figure it out you get so much money just to f*ck witch every one does for free and you don’t show up to the job??? Had not had one problem in the Europe and all babes!!!
This is way to long sorry just had this conversation to many times with the gang I tried to make it as short as possible.

Yani Z:
Your police statement may be true for some European countries but you certainly wouldn't find it so in the UK. Our police are so weak and unempowered I sometimes wonder why we even bother having a fucking police force at all - even when they arrest someone the courts nearly always let them off, even when 30 or 40 offences have been committed. No British police officer would beat you up, he's too busy filling 101 different forms in to even have time to!

Unless you are a "fucking paki".

I don't know what is to be gained with having this discussion here and in this way. All I see is an exchange of a lot of prejudice, based on very scattered and both too general and too personal information. The political-social-cultural situation differs greatly in Europe from country to country (and when you consider Belgium, even within countries). I have found out personally that the same is true with regards to different states in the US. Imagine my shock when I had spent 5 weeks in Hollywood doing research, and then moved on to Provo, Utah, to continue my research.

I know very little about America. Well, that is not true. Being a film historian specialized in the history of American film, I know a lot about America. But still, that is not nearly enough to even begin comparing the 'American' ways of life with the 'European' ways of life (note the inverted comma's and the plurals). When I was in different parts of America for extended periods of time, doing my research, I was still a European in America, just as Americans are still Americans when they are in Europe. There are many things I can't understand about America (as opposed to the USA). And that is fine. I am sure that there is a lot that you don't understand about Belgium.

In short, there are a lot of things said in this thread about both America(ns) and Europe(ans) that I recognize, but at least as many things that I don't recognize. For instance, contrary to Blue Sword, I have found most American people I have met, to be very friendly and not arrogant at all. In fact, in some ways, I thought they were too friendly and to open, almost childlike, in a very positive, refreshing way. I also don't recognize the difference made by Yani between social freedoms and humanity freedoms. Well, the humanity part at least, leaves me flabbergasted. Maybe that is because Yani mainly has experience with this in Eastern Europe?

Maybe it is time that this was discussed in another thread, in World News and Nonsense. Or maybe not so much discussed, as presented in the style of the "know your reviewer" thread. This could be the "know your ADT poster's country" thread. Judging from the answers most of you gave in the "what do you know about Belgium" poll, this might indeed be a good idea. A little knowledge never hurts when forming an opinion.

p.s. Bill, I am very disappointed that you made this comment:

This sounds like a case of blaming the son for the sins of his father. Not a very 'American' thing to do, as far as I can tell.

How many times would you like me to apologize?
Not at all. I'm just sick & tired of people who come from a country that attempted to exterminate an entire race of people making moral judgements about the actions of other countries.

Americans are probably the worst at ignorance in knowledge of foreign affairs, but they aren’t alone...

For example, German unemployment was 10% in September, whereas the US number was 6.0% (October). From memory I don’t think the US employment has been as high as 7.0% in many years.

My point is not to criticize but to point out that this probably comes as a surprise to foreigners observing the US angst over the economy. I myself expected to find Germany’s rate higher than the U.S. rate but was very surprised at so high as 10%.

As for guns, here’s an amusing story. Several years ago we had a foreigner (Canadian) come to work in our office for a while. He had watched all of the Hollywood movies and seemed in fear that Pablo Escobar lurked around every corner.

We did a quick survey and nobody in the office had ever been shot, or been shot at, or knew anyone who had. Indeed nobody had even heard a real gun fired except those who had served in the military (and this was an office in Texas!).

However, there are many places where you’d get the opposite answers, some no more than ten miles from that office. The US is still a fairly diverse place.

In 1990 I expect that an East Euro porn girl would have jumped at the chance to move to the US due to uncertainty at home. But now the uncertainties at home are much less and I wouldn’t expect the girls, on average, to find the risks of relocating worthwhile. They can make as much money by traveling to the US periodically, and there isn’t anything pushing them to leave home.

PS. Gun laws vary greatly from state to state, and it’s still the common for kids in rural farming or ranching areas to learn to shoot Armadillos and other varmits at a young age; it’s considered job training.
