For the typing disappearing though you might try a couple of things. Many, if they are going to make a long post, compose it outside in something like Word or Notepad, then copy and paste it into the message window.

At the very least, after you type, you could highlight all the text that you have typed and then use the Windows Ctrl + C (that is hold down the Ctrl button and then press C). That would put it into your windows memory so if pressing post has it disappear, you can open up the window and just paste it back in.

Another thing that seems to help with longer posts is to hit the Preview button, close the preview window, and then hit post.
