| santasingh Member 301 Posts 11/11 | Hello Everyone, Came across something very interesting and creative done by someone. Got a chance to watch movie called "GANDU" . This movie has full frontal hardcore scene's like a Porn Movie but has a story and a nice direction. I see this as hybrid or a combination of mainstream and Porn. this movie was selected and screened in Berlin Film Festival. The movie was in news because of full frontal hardcore scene's and abusive language .Gandu previewed at Yale University before making its international premiere on October 29, 2010 at the 2010 South Asian International Film Festival in New York City. Gandu was an official selection at the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival and was also screened at the Slamdance Film Festival. This movie is focused more on story, direction, camerawork and only two hardcore sex scene's comes as a part of Movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandu_%28film%29 ![]() Now question is , do we have any Porn movie making studio's who can create Hybrid of Mainstream and porn? Is there any other movie with frontal hardcore scenes , ever got noticed in International film festivals?A Fusion Porn is something new which has come up, and now this Movie. I believe Porn Industry do have creative minds so looking forward to see what is next and if anyone can do better fusion porn or a Hybrid of Mainstream & Porn. I am not sure if you have seen "GANDU" , If you see this movie then you can't compare it with porn movies made before 1990.It is totally different, It is a true hybrid of mainstream and Porn. Mainstream movies Awards do recognize even a small production studio's or a new director, who make make effort to do something differently and that is why this movie got so many awards. Let us see if AVN can recognize the efforts of some small production studio's doing different and unique things. |

[/quote] Maybe it would help if you could put on your movie critic hat and explain the distinction between "Last Tango In Paris" and "Pretty Peaches". If sexuality as part of human relationships is a legitimate subject for film to explore then I think counting sex scenes is simplistic. The question is whether or not those scenes are informing and developing the characters and the plot. |
| santasingh Member 301 Posts 11/11 | So the point here is, None of the Porn movies considered to be nominated together with mainstream movies. Is it possible to make a Movie ,where porn is a part of it and can be nominated together with mainstream movies? Yes this movie proves this, it can be done.Porn Industry had many excellent director's who never got a chance to show the direction talent and do something in mainstream movie line as well. So this movie is a example that it is possible. The main difference between the classics and this movie what i can think of is, Porn classics are made thinking about how to do sex scene's better and which can fit into story line.Sex scene's will always be longer and more concentration on sex scene's. The difference with this movie is, focus is more on story, camera work and direction, which makes sex scene's secondary . You can read more about critics views and other information in wikipedia link. Porn classics are still the best and wish those good old days porn movies, people start creating again. Recently there was a Movie by Rachel Steele with name "DIRTY MOVIE" which is 2 Hours long movie, that is one of the effort to bring back good old classics again. Plot of story for gandu:- Frustrated with his life in a poor Kolkata neighborhood, aspiring rapper Gandu steals money from his mother to finance a trip with his friend Ricksha. The two go off in a heroin-induced haze, finding it increasingly difficult to separate reality from hallucination. The film is shot mostly in black and white stressing on the bleak existence of the protagonist. At the end of the movie, the film shifts to the color mode showing that the character is enjoying the colorful existence induced by the drug he has consumed with his friend. The film also ponders on the meaning of life and what we must do with it. |

The Brown Bunny contained a graphic blowjob and was selected for the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. These are just the ones I know of off the top of my head I'm sure there are more. |
| santasingh Member 301 Posts 11/11 | This one is done by a director from India called "Q" (Qaushik Mukherjee). It was quite a different look and feel when i saw it specially with black and white and then in the end movie change to colorful with quite a sad story line of movie. If you find more of this kind, please update here. |

Many films from the 1970s could arguably be regarded as hybrid films, whether nominated or not -- I'm not sure why a film award is what distinguishes porn from a "hybrid" film. |

| Gore Gore Girl Doctor of the Erotic Arts 7238 Posts 1/09 | Recently, I read something about how the films we're essentially discussing here -- art films with hardcore -- are necessarily depressing. Like, hardcore will only be accepted as "more than porn" if it represents sex in a way that is gut-wrenching. Certainly, no frivolity allowed. :) Anyway, just some thoughts. A couple of other films I thought of in the "hardcore art film" vein are Baise-Moi (2000) and Romance (1999). And I found this wikipedia page on "unsimulated sex" which has an interesting list of films and trivia. |
| T0MBOne Senior Member 1200 Posts 5/08 | If Gandu, which I haven't seen, hits the mainstream, I gather it will be edited to a more acceptable x-rated or nc-17 version, which is what happened, in a sense, to Midnight Cowboy, an x-rated winner for Best Picture in 1969 that was edited into an R rated version. In other words, if it's a good film, an effort might be made to make it a bit more acceptable to general audiences. A side note: Flash mentioned Brown Bunny, I bought that at Big Lots for $3---tb Edited by - T0MBOne on 3/11/2012 4:45:22 PM Edited by - T0MBOne on 3/11/2012 5:14:13 PM |

Why none of the production studios making efforts these days to do something creative and different? why we can't have the porn classics of 70-80's back again :(. |

| BeDawg Member 80 Posts 1/06 | Other movies that are not Porn but include hardcore scenes that come to my mind: Porno Holocaust - legendary horror-hardcore-hybrid by italian exploitation-director Joe d'Amato (1981) Baise-Moi - great french movie by Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi (one of the favorite movies of Gandu director Q) (2000) Ken Park - coming-of-age movie by Larry Clark (Kids) and Ed Lachman (2002) Antichrist - masterpiece by rogue danish filmmaker Lars von Trier (2009) All given examples (there are far more of these hybrids) are great movies in my book. I get really surprised when i read articles on Popularity of bollywood movies in Germany and people in germany do like to see variety and different kind of movies. found some interesting articles from economic times for people who are interested in finding more information on popularity of bollywood movies in Germany. http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2010-09-11/news/27609887_1_hindi-film-cannes-film-festival-indian-filmmakers Few years back there was a time on German TV channel RTL II which K3G had opened up with a Friday night prime time telecast is on the wane as is the home video market. From Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho which reached the number one and two positions, respectively on the German DVD charts, beating big Hollywood blockbusters, selling almost 10,000-20,000 copies per title (priced at around e10-15) has come down to a slot of number 50 on the charts and manage to sell only a few thousand copies. Still the popularity of Bollywood star's is amazing specially in Germany :) http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2008-02-12/news/27693258_1_shahrukh-khan-berlin-film-festival-german-language German media reported that there were 20,000 enquiries for tickets for Om Shanti Om (screened as a part of the international film festival) and they were all sold out in seven minutes. Some waited outside the venue the entire night to get in. for example, Alexandra Venetikidiz, a high school girl, who was there to catch a glimpse of SRK. She has seen Om Shanti Om over 20 times. Two years ago she hit upon a Shahrukh movie when she was looking for an Amitabh Bacchan film recommended by a friend. Now, she is a committed Shahrukh fan. She says she has seen all his movies. "I get DVDs from local shops or order it over the internet," she said. Very rare to see popularity of Bollywood movie fans like what Germany has. |

And, just to be sure we're on the same page, what is your cutoff line between 'porn' and 'hybrid?' Simply the amount of screen-time devoted to sex? Oh, and KEN PARK is definitely a great film...ANTICHRIST is a pompous exercise in misogyny. Edited by - john lyons on 3/12/2012 10:48:02 AM |
| BlackSix All-Star Member pornography wasn't sex but fantasies of an impossibly hospitable world 12377 Posts 9/07 | I know that SHORTBUS was made intentionally by Cameron as a comedy in reaction to films like Dumonnt's and ANATOMY OF HELL. I like them all but agree that the distinction between the xxx classics of the 70s and more 'mainstream' films has more to do with production and cultural context than actual quality. A really fine xxx film may be shot on a smaller budget and with other limitations but they can be surprisingly powerful and effective on their own terms. Other art films with explicit sex I'd recommend: FAT GIRL, POLA X and BATTLE IN HEAVEN. Edited by - BlackSix on 3/13/2012 3:39:00 AM |
| BeDawg Member 80 Posts 1/06 | I have to completely disagree on the misogyny allegation towards von Trier and Antichrist. I've read this before but don't think it's veritable. I can't find any women hating propaganda in that movie. At least we both like Ken Park. Which, refering to Gore Gore Girl's and Black Six's posts, isn't really lighthearted as well, but the sex is portrayed as something very positive! |
| Gore Gore Girl Doctor of the Erotic Arts 7238 Posts 1/09 | I've not seen Ken Park, but I do want to see it. I've never seen a von Trier film I liked, so I'm not exactly itching to see Antichrist. |

Unless they were mentioned earlier and I missed it, I would add Rinse Dream's Cafe Flesh and Night Dreams to the list of XXX features that enjoyed mainstream success on the film festival circuit. Dream's Dr. Caligari doesn't contain hardcore sex but is stylistically very influenced by his earlier films and has also done well in the mainstream. I'm surprised Marco Bellocchio's Devil in the Flesh has never stirred up the kind of attention lavished on The Brown Bunny. No camera trickery here - Maruschka Detmers (a European leading lady who went on to do a film with Bruce Willis) quite clearly gives her on-screen partner a blowjob in loving closeup. |

I'm kinda playing devil's advocate here to a certain extent, but I fail to see what makes the inclusion of hardcore sex in good films so revolutionary. It's been happening for over 40 years and, regardless of whether the film was marketed to the porn or art crowds, that doesn't change the nature of the film. |

In a typical case of von Trier shit-disturbing the film seems to be saying what you outlined above, but that's because viewers assume that Defoe's character is supposed to be the good guy and we're to take his side against Charlotte, he's not, I think he's another example of von Trier's overly rationalistic, controlling, patriarchal males and it is he who is abusing his wife throughout her 'treatment.' In essence, I'd say that von Trier is on the devil/woman's side. This becomes even clearer in his next film Melancholia. |

Also, Alice in Wonderland brought musical and porn together. There was quite a lot of signs that porn was going to meld together with "normal" movies. But that didn't ever happen. As the reviewer on IMDB says, some weird conventions started to appear more and more in non-sexual regular movies where they added sex scenes trying to show sex but making sure absolutely nothing too much was shown which mostly always just has made it even more clear that we are watching a planned out and staged movie. There clearly was a need to make and a need to see sexual things in movies but for some reason actual porn lost its growing position in popular culture and by the time when porn was being nearly only shot straight to video, porn had become more of an underground and even shameful thing again. The French tried later to incorporate hardcore sex in movies and after that there has slowly been more movies like that. But for some reason these movies are always these so-called art films. There has also been some full porn movies like Destricted and Dirty Diaries which have been sold in regular movie shops apart from porn shelves. All of these are considered as "art" films. That seems to be the only way for people to dare to accept pornographic imagery into movies. As the whole thing is still something people are ashamed to watch and that the movies need an "art" label for them to be accepted, it's no wonder that kind of imagery is still considered as revolutionary.
It's an odd thing how people feel about porn. People seem to even dismiss porn because it arouses. I've encountered sooo many times people who are completely stunned when I say I bought a porn movie. They ask why did I buy it. They say they wouldn't ever in a million years pay money for porn. They say they like to watch it but they wouldn't buy it. If I ask why they just answer that OF COURSE they won't buy porn. For them it's just something that is supposed to watch for free. I'm sure that the fact that it mainly just arouses them makes it somehow less valuable form of entertainment, but I can't say why it is so. To me, seeking for arousal and orgasm from porn is no different than seeking for laughter from a comedy or tears from a drama. Also, dramas can do a lot more than just make the viewer cry and comedy can do a lot more than just make the viewer laugh. That is also the case with porn, but I think that because arousal and an orgasm is such a HUGE feeling physically and mentally, it is harder to see that they would have any other value. |

I'm surprised The Brown Bunny got so much attention. Maybe it just proves the US is 20 years behind the times. Oh, and that wikipedia list is very incomplete. Jacco |

These days not many people are willing to put effort and money in creating good story based movies & some unique stuff like porn classics and the classics what are listed on discussion.Porn studio's are worried they will not be able to recover the money. Most of the porn studio's would love to make movies but they are worried about the upfront investment. If porn studio's work with right sales strategy and idea is unique, it is still possible to create some classics again. There is lot of restriction on shooting outdoor's for a porn movie and many studio's don't get permission. The technique what was used in Recent release "THE DIRTY MOVIE" was rotto scoping (using special effects) to show the opening of movie in India. So with the software's we have available, it is possible to do many things and people don't have to really travel and find lot of outdoor locations to shoot. special effects in movies are costly but it is still cheaper in comparison to traveling with full shooting unit to different country to shoot movie or requesting for permission from Government.Creation of sets,Dresses, they do have to spend money but lot of other things can be done using special effects software's. So my view is , people will watch the free hardcore scene's free on tube sites because for them it is all same like watch it and forget it. Those scene's does not leave any impact on viewers mind.If people create unique movies, with some new ideas that leaves the impact on viewers mind and they will remember the movie and many people will spend money to buy it. "THE DIRTY MOVIE" is one of the examples that it is possible to follow some of the golden age porn classics style and create a 2 Hours long movie with a story and a proper climax (Sad /Happy ending). GANDU and many other movies mentioned on this post are examples that if porn is done in a creative way, it leaves impact and people buy it .Porn studios do get big returns for making these kind of movies with awards and recognitions. The movies mentioned in this discussion are good examples for porn studio's to try out different things instead of shooting a hardcore sex scene. |

| Kimi Lixx Senior Member 2012 Posts 6/01 | Room in Rome - Two very pretty women acting like drama queen teenagers attempting to out-do each other with traumatic and unfulfilling pasts while playing secret squirrel and never really getting down to the sex, although the scenes when they shut up and interact sexually are quite appealing. It ends up being more depressing than arousing. I wondered if I should have watched it with the sound off and just fast forwarded through everything, so, really, it was ultimately no better than a lame porn movie would have been, and had less sex. Exterminating Angels - A relatively attractive middle aged guy makes a movie of women having sex with women, which is supposed to be breaking some incredible taboo and be dreadfully exciting. All the young women are very attractive, and there are several scenes of a sexual nature that are pleasant to watch, but they definitely fall short of being actually arousing and they are quite brief. The whole movie making thing ends up destroying the guy's life. Some sort of weird interplay with these code talking angels/spirits is going on, but I couldn't figure it out AT ALL. I'm guessing that was the "art" part of the film, and perhaps it suffered from translation (it's a French movie). It seemed that the movie was just about to get better every few minutes, but it never did. Again, more depressing than arousing. Irreversible - There is a lot of violence in this movie. The only sex we saw was m/f rape or m/m and supposed to be bdsm or at least fetishy. The plot, if there was one, was indecipherable for us. We did not finish watching this movie. The "art" appears to involve hanging a camera from a bungee cord and letting it bounce and spin around while aiming vaguely toward city-scapes and brick walls until you force the viewer to fast forward to get through the stupidity to a place where characters are on the screen doing something, there are also discordant tones and unpleasant noises played a various times so that, if you're too dumb to know that this movie is art and is supposed to make you uncomfortable, you get uncomfortable enough to turn the sound off. It's not emotionally disturbing, it just hurts your ears and gives you a headache. No arousal, but at least it wasn't depressing - maybe it would have been if we continued watching. |
