We haven't worked out the EXACT figures (and I wouldn't be able to post them anyway).
But for our company, anyway, it is a combination of those two factors (priority of what we think will sell more and movies which are special to us like award winners or company favorites).

It doesn't make sense to release a movie that didn't even sell well when it first came out on VHS. Also, comps like Buttman's Favorite ... (Legs and Ass or Big Tits just don't have a high enough profit margin to reason out putting in all the effort for doing the DVD. Plus, it would take up the release spot of a better full video because we are being very careful not to oversaturate the market with our DVD product.

At Evil Angel, there is a DVD producer (myself, Rick Hall, or Brandon Iron) who works one-on-one with an authorer for every single DVD that we release. We don't want to give up that kind of personal attention and quality on anything, even a comp.

So to answer your question in general terms, yes, we have looked at how many units we think would be sold of each movie, and have been picking titles accordingly.

Can you give any idea of the number of DVD's sold where it clearly does make sense economically. That's not right on the line, if that's sensitive (as I guess it is)?

If you figure you can sell 5,000 DVD's, say half of which would have been tape sales and the other half of which wouldn't happen at all, does it clearly make sense.

Or is more like 10,000, again with half canablizing tape and half sales you'd otherwise not get?

I can say, though that our hopes are to have the majority of our movies on DVD at some point. We have done a rough estimate that any old movie that is going to go onto DVD from our company will be done by the end of 2003. (Half by the end of 2002.)

The answer to your question is different for a new movie than for an old one. We are guessing that there are some older movies that a person will rent or buy on DVD even if they had seen it on VHS. And there are probably some that they wouldn't.
With new ones, chances are that putting it on DVD will only help TOTAL sales, not hurt it.

Also, Buttman Confidential is on permanent hold for a DVD release due to many factors, all of which I cannot mention.

Acually, Rolling Cheeks will probably come out in 2002. We love that movie.
The Please series is going to be released in order.

Well, out of curiosity, why would Buttman Confidential be delayed? For what reasons? (If you cannot answer, I understand. You have stated, Tricia, that you cannot get into that) Just wondering about it.

I understand that a series should be released in order (although, some series are not released in order), but Please #8 is a bomb! So, you, also, like Rolling Cheeks, eh? Yeah, that film is awesome! I look forward to that, and the other ones that I have mentioned.

As far as Evil Angels's general policy on DVD's goes, they tend to let each director make his own priority list from the back catalog, and then rotate back catelogue release among their stable of directors. I imagine that John and Tricia can have an influence on this (as in advice as to what's likely to financially do best), or otherwise make some of the release calls outside of John's titles, but the directors have a lot of say in it as well, from what Tricia has said on other threads.

You may not know this, but part of Evil Angel's strength is that it's very director oriented. More so than any other studio so far as I know. Directors at Evil Angel get a slice of the profits, and not just a flat fee. (Hence they have more than pride as a reason to want their titles out on DVD.) They make most of the decisions about each of their projects.

Evil Angel chooses the directors it wants to work with. And then givens them a lot of free reign and decision making power as well as an incentive deal. Is it a surprise then that they get some of the best gonzo directors working for them??
