I love porn. But today's porn sucks, and has done so for a long time. Let me explain the reasons why, in my point of view. And please reply if you agree or disagree.

Porn has a potential to be something really great, as an artform that affects the consumer (viewer) in a unique way. Any human being with an average level of sensitivity can be drawn in to a painting, a movie, a novel or a piece of music. But porn can move you both mentally and physically. Mentally, with the sexual fantasies coming to life in front of your eyes, making you identify with the actors or actresses in the scene you're watching, giving you some sort of dream ride. Physically, with your body responding to the sexual heat in the scene, making you horny, making you jerk off, making you cum. It is a powerful artform.

No, I'm not talking about "art porn" or anything like that here, I hate pretentious indie/arthouse porn, I'm talking about the mainstream hardcore porn. The most popular porn flicks, companies, directors and stars. I am aware of the ongoing change in porn film culture, the shift from full-length films towards isolated (web-distributed) scenes, but I think that the porn film, as a medium, is still relevant (companies like Tushy and Private compile their scenes into full-length "films" anyway), just like the music industry is more song oriented now but people still care about albums.

So what's wrong with today's porn? If you, like me, prefer anal sex in porn, you should't complain too much, perhaps, because nowadays EVERY young beautiful porn actress does anal (sooner or later, depending on her career strategy), and the production quality is higher than ever - better lighting, better camera work, nicer-looking locations, and no male performer has had any wood problem since the advent of Viagra and Cialis around the year 2000. The sex is dirtier and the length of the scenes range from long to very long (not like the early 90's where a scene could be like 9 minutes long, and if there was a DP in it, you got one minute and one camera angle). Isn't all this very good?

I say no. Because I think people - including porn directors - confuse "heat" with "energy". Everyone who likes porn wants to see some sexual heat when they're watching it - we want to get turned on. I can't deny that there is a lot of energy in the porn scenes directed by Mason (and similar directors), but the problem is that this type of scenes has NOTHING BUT energy. What we, the porn consumers, get to see is nothing but a non-stop fuckfest. And I know that a lot of people enjoy this and prefer it over everything else. But this type of porn misses something - something essential, I believe.

What is missing? Well, think about it - what is it that these porn scenes actually show us? Pretty women (some are beautiful, most are just young and in good shape, which is not too bad) in mansions or all-white photo studios, meeting men who they give head and get fucked by, and the scene finish with the girl(s) covered in cum, smiling at the camera, and then fadeout. If you as a porn consumer are looking for "sex", you get it here, no problem. But that's just the thing - the porn scene does only that, it only presents some sex, nothing more and nothing less, and it is dull.

In real life, sex is more than sex. I'm not talking about love or romance here, just to be clear. I'm talking about being attracted to a person, trying to get close to her, succeeding in doing that, getting to a situation where you and her can have sex, and finally doing that. All the steps before the actual sex are important in building up the sexual tension - and it is the sexual tension that gives the ensuing sex its heat (at least a big portion of its heat). Sex in itself is never sexy - it is what comes before that can be sexy, intriguing, intoxicating.

Porn used to have that, because there used to be scripts. Not only in "feature film" porn - a genre that I hate, because the scripts are really silly and/or pretentious, and always tiresome, always superfluous - but also in less ambitious (and more sympathetic) "average" porn. Like the vignettes in Private Video Magazine or the classic Triple X series, or the wonderful Kelly the Coed series. Do yourself a favor - watch "Kelly the Coed 7: Sorority retreat" (from 2000) and notice how turned on you get when Monica Cameron and Sheila Rossi play two young students who are suddenly visited by three frat boys who have just been to a football game and are now drunk and horny. This simple setup makes all the difference for the feeling you get when you watch the sex. Two euro sluts fucked and DP'd by three American porn actors - we've seen it a million times, both before and after. But since this scene (as the whole film) has the ambition of creating erotic fiction - not just filmed sex - we as viewers are immediately drawn in much more. The sex becomes more exciting, tantalizing, hot.

Today's porn needs to get closer to that. Closer to fiction, which means closer to realism. I used to worship Greg Lansky for his Tushy work, because what I saw in his early productions there blew my mind - those scenes were beautifully made, had some sort of (very simple) plots and were focussed on anal sex. Everything I could dream of. But after a while, Lansky's style became increasingly mechanical and cold. The more of it I watched, the more I realized that I had been fooled: Lansky's Tushy scenes may have superior production values and they may avoid the tiresome high-energy, ultra-dirty Evil Angel/Jules Jordan/HardX type scenes, but they still lack heat. The porn actresses and porn actors in Lansky's scenes are no less robots than the ones in other porn films. They are going through the motions - they look good doing it, but they are really going through the motions.

It's not all Greg Lansky's (or Mason's, or Jules Jordan's) fault, though. I think that the level of professionalism and efficiency in today's porn industry has taken away some of porn's - dare I say it? - soul. It's just business, it's just work. The male performers work out, are in good shape, and use Cialis so they never have to worry about erection, which means that they never have to be actually horny. The female performers have perfect pubic hair removal, are well trained for ass stretching activities (including enema and a lot of warming up before every anal scene), have learned how to get gagged by a cock without throwing up or having a nervous breakdown, and have learned to scream and shout a lot during the sex acts, pretending (acting) that the giant cock in the butt actually hurts or feels good. These professionals meet and go to work, their bodies interact mechanically and predictably, the un-natural cock penetrate the un-natural asshole. It looks good on camera. But it is very far away from sex in real life, and it is very far away from erotic fiction, which plays with fantasies about real life.

By the way: half an hour of tease/ass worshipping/toy play before the sex starts is no good compensation. It makes you, the porn viewer, sexually frustrated and truly teased, and that may make the ensuing sex more gratifying. But it is still nothing but a porn actress doing some silly stuff, with or without her interacting with the camera guy. It makes me yawn and fast forward.

I must also add that I don't think that porn should go back to some "golden era". There is no truly golden era in porn - not yet, although there might be in the future. The period I like most is the mid-90's and its plethora of great anal sex and DP scenes shot in Europe - the prime years of people like Pierre Woodman, Rocco Siffredi, Christoph Clark (he was more talented as a performer than as a director) and Jean-Yves Le Castel (him too). It was a short period of time, because if you watch porn made just before that (like early 90's Magma, Private, Zane or Rosebud films), the production quality is extremely poor, you can't hardly watch it. And if you watch porn made in the late 90's and the years after, you see a sad decline for the directors mentioned (it became cheaper and easier to produce porn films, so they started making cheaper and sloppier porn films) and the American directors inspired by them (with some nice exceptions).

I don't want new porn to look like old Private films. I want new porn to be better than Private ever was (which is not too high an aim; Private produced a lot of crap along with the gems). But I think that today's porn directors could learn something from the porn made in the 90's. There is a tension in a lot of the scenes from those years - not only because of the scripts and setups (I love them, though - I will never forget how the cute art student get ass fucked by Roberto Malone and his friends in Triple X #7) but because of the "wild west" feeling of making porn in a climate when a DP was still "a thing" and you never knew if the beautiful actress you are currently watching were soon to disappear from the porn scene forever (still miss you, Blondie). Still, it's a good thing that the porn industry is professional and "clean" now, it's good for the porn stars not least. But the more convenient and practical something is, the less edgy and exciting it gets.

Sorry for writing so much. I'll shut up now. But please comment. I think that this could turn into an interesting and meaningful discussion. Thanks for reading.

Here are some films that I consider hot:

1. "The Little French Maid" (1981) - Connie Peterson is lovely in this early example of an anal- and DP-themed film
2. "Eccitazione Fatale AKA Cosmic Clinic" (1992) - Moana Pozzi is great, the anal sex here is great
3. "La Petite Pute" (1993) - young French actresses fucked in every hole by the best French dudes of the time, without overdubbed sound
4. "Kruger Park" (1996) - one of Pierre Woodman's three best films
5. "Cape Town" 1 & 2 (1996) - the other two of Woodman's best films
6. "Buttman's Bug Butt Euro Babes" (1997) - John Stagliano falls in love with eastern Europe
7. "Rocco et Sylvia AKA Miss Erotica" (1997) - wonderful meeting between Rocco and Silvia Saint
8. "Confessioni Anali" (1998) - Angelica Bella, the queen!
9. "Kelly The Coed" 1-9 (1998-2000) - it was a great series, before it became uninspired
10. "Christoph's Beautiful Girls" 1-15 (early 2000's) - this was a great series, the high point of Christoph Clark's work as director

Porn is great, and there are numerous firms catering to 'classy', or 'upmarket' porn.

I don't want classy/upmarket porn. I want regular gonzo porn to be better, hotter.

I often wish there was more ''love'' in porn as pretty often you can see pretty clearly when the chemistry just isn't there between performers and it all feels like a forced act with actors and a 30-40 non-stop fuckfest. Not necessarly love as lovers having sex but the kind of affection you see in girl/girl porn. All the kisses, the hand brushing the hair, the compassion, the sensuality, eroticism, I know this sounds a lot like 70s porn movies or softcore scenes lol but I imagine there can be a compromise between softcore and hardcore. These scenes probably already exists, it's that a fan of anal, I love anal but it's often very brutal, foot on the face, lots of yelling from the male performer and a major turn-off. I heard it cathers to the audience that prefer harder stuff, more roughness, raw sex with lots of ''fuck'' and slapping/choking. The thing is, a lot of people like the softer sex too. Maybe I am not going on the right websites but I am not really picking sites, I am picking women I like and watch their scenes. I guess they happen to shoot for harder websites and that's the way it is. I realise my preferences are not everyone's preference, I'm stating why I have a love/hate relationship with pornography lately. I love it but there are aspects of the scenes that really turn me off, borderline make them unwatchable to me. That's my honest opinion, peace!

I agree. And I feel that it's too much either/or - either we get vanilla-soft scenes where there never is any anal sex (which is a bummer to me), or we get super-rough scenes with DAP, foot on the face, etc. I wish there was some sort of middle ground - scenes with hot dirty sex but made with the compassion and sensuality that you mention.

By the way, 70's porn is not always that soft - rape scenes are surprisingly common, even in the most classic films of that era.

I just saw Tori Black's DP scene for Tushy from last year. So disappointing. Such a beautiful young woman, what a gorgeous body she has, and what a lovely face, it's amazing that she does all the dirty things that she does. But why must she exaggerate so much with the screaming and moaning during the sex? "Fuck my little asshole, YES!", it just sounds silly. I don't think it's her fault, I think this type of acting is encouraged by the directors these days. But it's such a realism killer.

I think that's a reason I like watching porn scenes where the male and female porn stars come from different countries and don't speak the same language - there is a limit to how much they can communicate verbally, so they focus on the physical interaction. There can be a problem, though, in scenes with multiple (American or French) males and one (let's say, Hungarian) female - often the guys in those scenes talk to each other and no one really adress the girl directly. That kind of kills the chemistry and makes it hard to believe that the girl really enjoys the sex. It's like the scene is about men having sex with each other and share the same living sex toy.

I have read your posts here & can't say I come away understanding precisely what you are looking for in your porn. That's understandable. There have been similar exchanges in the lesbian related threads here in recent years. Since underlying all porn is the fact it's a performance, consumers like you are often disappointed. As for Tori Black, she screamed her way through a porn career because it sold. You see it as phony & you are right. Another guy hears it & it feeds his fantasy of a sex crazed slut. There are more of them than there are of you, so Tori just kept yelling her way to the bank. Anyways, good luck. By the way, I liked the Miss Hungary scene in Capetown, but thought the Kelly the Coed series was a bore.

"Genuinely hot porn" is subjective.

However, based on what I have been reading in the thread thus far, I can recommend a Joey Silvera title called The Evil Vault (2004) that's loaded with some "hot" scenes:

a three way with Cassandra Wild,

some guys with Vicky Vette,

an IR scene with Dana Vespoli,

a three-on-two bit with Jessica Dee and Veronica Devil.

Some other scenes from "the vault" two disc set are also worth a look.

I have reviewed about 500 films for ADT and maybe one stand-out scene (at best) would pop up on a gonzo production. So, the Silvera disc is a rare bird.

You're right. The stuff that sells is the stuff that gets made. I just don't see why the companies don't broaden their markets more - I mean, even if it's only 10 % of the porn viewers who prefer natural moaning over excessive screaming, those 10 % still make up quite a lot of consumers, people who are willing to pay for their thing. But I guess that it's a "winner takes it all"-type of mentality within the porn business, even more so than in other fields of the entertainment industry (a big record company might release music by some artists that are not as hugely popular as its biggest artists, just because it makes the company more respected and trusted). I'm sorry if I seem unclear regarding what I'm looking for in porn. To simplify: I want vignettes with relatable scripts AND anal sex and DP's, hardcore but not mega-intense fuckfest-crazy hardcore, made with today's great standards of women and picture quality.

And you're right, the Kelly The Coed series is miles away from being as good as Cape Town.

Thank you, I'll check that out. I like Joey Silvera, mainly as a performer. Do you have any other recommendations (doesn't have to be gonzo)?

I have reviewed some classic titles with Silvera. One worth a look that's not so well known is Expensive Tastes from 1978.

I have given rave reviews to some other "newer" feature titles:

The Tease (1990) that's a terrific John Leslie flick,

My Baby Got Back 8 (1996) for the extended orgy,

Models (1997) for the Nancy Vee scenes,

Cabaret Desire (2013) for the feature and shorts that accompany it.

Thanks, I'm going to check out "The Tease" and "My Baby Got Back 8"! I think I'll skip "Expensive Tastes" since I don't like rape scenes, though, and also "Models" since that toilet scene seems pretty sick.

P.S. I loved your rhymed review of MBGB 8, very creative!

I had my "stable" of porn critics help me with DVDs that were too stupid or too outrageous or both:

T-Pity did a great job on My Baby Got Back 8 plus bad rappin' reviews of Juicy Latin Coochie, Official Flava of Love Parody, Phat Round Spanish Butts, Black Girl Glory Holes 2 and a line at the end of Spinal Tap 10,

Richie the Brit wrote about Brit wanking in UK Biggest Boobs, Your Choice Viewers' Wives 60, Fuck a Fan Global Edition 2: London, British Gang Bang Sluts, Best of Johnny Rebel and a Michell Thorne disc.

The rape stuff in Expensive Tastes is kind of tame in terms of delivery. The hooker enlisted to solve the case makes this flick a bit unique for classic porn.

Watch Models on DVD and you can easily skip past the Nancy Vee toilet and plunger bit. I liked how the two couples hook up for the finale.

I can jot down some other individual gonzo scenes if you like: I especially liked the opening of Hunter Bryce's scene with Johnny Sins in John Leslie's Fresh Meat 25 and others.

Have a good Memorial Day weekend---tb

I would love that, please jot away! Thanks!

I checked out "The Tease" and it was very nice. I only wish that there were some anal in it... a bit disappointing, knowing how much John Leslie loved shooting anal sex scenes (but maybe he developed that fixation av few years later, starting with the Voyeur series?).

I think the problems with mainstream porn come from the producers and directors. Mainstream companies forget the purpose of porn is to be sexual entertainment. They are very disconnected to fans and they just film whatever they want. Producers think people will buy a movie because the girl is hot. It takes more than good looks for a scene to be sexually entertaining.

They film scenes with boring fantasies. There is a scene by Brazzers about the guy and girl swapping bodies. I don't fantasize swapping bodies with a woman. I'm a dude.

I totally agree that scenes are lacking sexual heat or a sexual build up. I want the sexual tension to anticipate a very hot scene. People jumping into sex without any buildup is very boring. I think Naughty America is the best company at building sexual heat to lead to a hot sex scene.

Another problem is pornstars being naked at the start of films. It ruins the anticipation of removing their clothes during the sex scene. I don't want to see her dress for 5 minutes. That 5 minutes could have been used for story or sex. It's poor time management.

^---A sex scene could and should be thought of as an opportunity to make something creative (dare we say erotic) like short films traditionally do. We tend to get disposable junk most of the time because the gonzo porn makers tend to be generally lazy with what's on the front end and the back end of their scenes. There was hope when Nica Noelle and Erika Lust and Jacky St. James were around. I am out of the loop now so I am assuming not much is changing for the better.

^^^--- I poked around on my John Leslie 4 on 1 review to dial up some features of his with anal. The first Nightshift Nurses (198?) has some but the comedy stuff might be a turn-off. Maybe Bad Habits (1994) is the ticket with a Tiffany Mynx anal encounter lodged into one of Leslie's best features. Chameleons-Not the Sequel (1992) is another terrific flick but I don't seem to remember much if any anal. Yea, Leslie would shoot more anal in his post-Dog Walker gonzo flicks for Evil Angel. I have singled out an Angel Dark encounter from Crack Her Jack 3 that also made it onto a later compilation.

I will list a few individual scenes that were stand-outs on 5 scene DVDs that I have reviewed:

Official Vagina Monologues Parody (201?)---Kimberly Kane's chatty and sexy scene

Face Bath (2008)---Vanessa Lane's sloppy encounter

Orgy Masters (2012)---Christina Rose's anal bits are best

Skin Trade (UK, 2013)---The opening scene with Lisa Love and Tamara Grace and two dudes is quite good

Lex Steele XXX Volume 2 Collector's Edition (201?)---Sandra Romain's terrific 3-way

You're right, Naughty America has done some nice scenes.
This is SO true! I couldn't agree more.
