I'm glad you asked the question; it's good to know that people are discussing HIV transmission in the workplace. I'll answer as best I can.

I don't know that there are specific statistics to compare the relative risks of vaginal versus anal intercourse. It's really very difficult to assess this kind of thing, as few heterosexual couples only engage in only one activity or the other. If a couple is having vaginal intercourse regularly, and occasionally has anal intercourse, how can you tell which act led to HIV transmission? Also, it's just plain difficult to have people respond honestly and candidly about that kind of sexual history. Forgive me, but in terms of statistics and epidemiology, it's kind of a "messy" question.

Estimates of the relative risk of HIV transmission for anal intercourse do exist from gay men, and a single act of unprotected anal intercourse, the risk of transmission to the "receptive" partner is about one in two hundred. In State Lotteries, if the odds were that favorable, the government would have exited that business years ago.

My guess would be that the risk to a female for vaginal or anal sex with an infected partner might be about the same. It could be that anal sex was more dangerous, as there tends to be more trauma to the more delicate rectal tissues, but I can't put a numeric value on that difference.

In any case, I would remind you that worldwide, the major route of transmission for HIV is heterosexual vaginal intercourse. In India, the number one risk of infection for a female is: marriage.
