Hey guys,
I did perform a search on this forum, but I could only find posts about guys wanting to get in to the industry working as talent in front of the camera. I'm interested in the opposite, I have no interest in working as talent, but I am interested in working as crew with the goal of becoming a director and/or producer.
I am a man who appreciates the female body to the fullest. As far as porn goes, I'm impressed both by directors like Andrew Blake for the artsy look, but also by certain gonzo directors who capture the beautiful talent in just the right angles when performing. I just have so many ideas when it comes to settings, angles, lighting etc, and I would like to have the chance to put them to life.
What advice can you give me on getting a foot in this industry behind the camera?
I have a background in international and online marketing (affiliate programs, pay per click, media buying), so I am not 18 and right out of school. I have directed music videos and produced short films (non adult). I have also worked with artist/model management, so I'd say I have experience, just not from the adult business side.
I would be interested in starting out with a crew position to get on set and see how everything is run if that is what is required.
Any advice is highly appreciated.

Read, read, read this forum, especially the discussions regarding what people dislike about how (technically) porn is made. I think if you join up with an established studio, you risk being assimilated and learning their bad habits and wrong thinking about what fans want to see on screen. But that's probably the only way to get into the biz if you don't have the necessary connections and whatnot to start your own company. Good luck to you.

I think if you just try and break in to mainstream film-making in California you will naturally fall into porn. Many Hollywood film peeps got their start that way. And if you are bad enough at it, you will be set for a long career in porn.

Well, I did think about just trying to set up a scene myself and paying for the talent and location, but since I don't have any background in the industry, I wouldn't really know what to do with the content. I mean, I could set up a new website and try to get members and all that, but I'm not really interested in that. I want to do the creative directing or producing part, not handle websites and trying to drive traffic and members and all of a sudden having the pressure of having to deliver new content every week or day. It would also have to be in some kind of small niche, because I wouldn't really want to compete with the big guys out there who are adding content on a daily basis. Not sure I'm interested.
Well, saying that it's easier to make it in mainstream film first, and then going to porn... If I had already made it in mainstream, I'm not sure I'd have any time to do porn, right?
Would some of the people already "in the biz" perhaps share a story on how they got involved? I don't need a plan served on a silver plate, just some suggestions and some inspiration.

Something like Clips4sale sounds perfect for what you described. Your video just sits there and people buy a clip at a time, so no pressure to constantly satisfy hungy subscribers. The only problem is you still have to somehow drive people to your C4S site, from the outside, as it is damn near impossible to stand out amongst the hundreds of stores there. And niche is good.
