I got my porn in my early days like many of us old timers, finding mags, friend having a VHS tape he took from someone, etc. When we needed to make an effort! Now, I love having whatever smut I want to watch at my fingertips.

But recently, I'm nostalgic for the late 90's, early 2000's porn that I watched when I turned 18 and had my first car. I drove all over searching for adult video shops and would spend hours inside deciding what I'll rent or buy. I had stacks of magazines with Club being my go to. Rarely missed a new issue.

Now today, I find myself loading up what I consider, my golden age of porn. I'm at the point in my love of all things porn, going back to scenes, movies and stars that I haven't jerked off too in a long, long time. Just wondering if others feel that today porn has just a different quality. Yes it's high production, 4K resolution, 60 fps, but the porn "I came of age" with, just had something special.

Man, I miss those days. No responsibilities. Just a pocket full of dollar bills for the peep shows, lasted Club issue, and a new VHS tape to spend the night with. Guess I'm getting old :)

I guess I do miss the thrill of being able to pull off the feat of actually seeing a porno. It was a real accomplishment, like doing a hundred push-ups without pausing, cooking a really great meal, or finally having the girl kiss you back. The first decent fuck I ever saw was the first scene of Jennifer Welles in a movie called "Thunderbuns." (If nothing else dates me, that should.) In the annals of history, this was not a great scene. But it was the actual thing. And I was not an actual adult (arrest me), but watching whatever that thing was that purported to be a penis go up Jennifer Welles, was at the time a thing of beauty. And the other guys I watched it with felt the same way. So this, we told ourselves, was an ass.

What I don't miss are the taboos, restrictions, and obstacles society put in our way of us watching something that harms no one. I mean, for godsake, it's sex. Nearly all of us (absolutely all of us back then) were the products of two people getting it on. Why watching sex is supposed to rot our minds or degrade our morals, when taking part in the act itself is one of the objectives of the human species, never made sense to me.

So while I'll always have nostalgia for the late '70s and early '80s, which were great for me for the most part, I do not miss making secret getaways to the deliberately zoned red-light district of town - a dozen or so square blocks where all sorts of truly illegal and harmful crap was permitted - just to see a bare ass. VHS was a gift from heaven. The first VHS XXX tapes had packaging decorated like they were somebody's graduation album or golf party, with the cover photo taken on a Polaroid SX-70, stick-on letters misspelling the title, and cast members (first names only) written in Sharpie: "Starring BARBI, DANDELION, HONEY." Still, a lot of the guys and I knew this was just the start of something. As soon as girls like Anna Ventura and Ginger Lynn started gracing the VHS covers, we knew this was an industry. The floodgates were open. We had faith that, given enough time, we would be able to watch any girl we wanted, any time we wanted, getting off however much we wanted her to.

And it does not matter how amateurish modern scenes will be, or which cell phone cameras they used for their lopsided shots. . . They'll beat "Thunderbuns." Hands down.

I was a teen in the 90s/early 00s, and was a major fan of the pre-Gonzo days where there was a little (albeit badly acted and shot) storyline, the plots were cheesy, sex was vanilla but I liked it that way and I never got into anal at all which became a must for all starlets to try out later on.

For me, a dividing line is, and I mean no disrespect to anyone posting here who might be offended, tattoos.

I've never seen one that enhanced a woman's beauty and I also think they look pretty horrible / risible on men too.

Everyone in porno has them in the current era, and it's a major wood killer for me.

There are pretty girls in today's world but almost no one seemed to have them up to (to pick at date at random) 1998-99 or so.

I got a Wicked.com subscription last week, and their classic scenes you can view pre-2000s, no one had tattoos, it seemed like it wasn't tolerated or frowned upon by producers. For their recent scenes 99 per cent of the models have them! Unsurprisingly I've been checking out the 'old' and not the 'new'.

But they have a few Casey Calvert scenes and I've become bewitched by her body, face and demeanour - best part? no tattoos, and I think that's still true of Casey today.

Just my 2 cents.

Great topic for us old timers. I turned 18 in the early seventies when you pretty much had to go to an adult movie theater to see a porn flick (although I did see Deep Throat at a regular theater in Hollywood when it first came out). You could also watch 8mm films in booths at porn shops, although they were a bit sleazy. I find that the films I loved back then don't transfer too well to the small screen. The lighting is generally not great, which you can overlook on the big screen but less on the small screen. I do miss some of the great stars of my early days watching porn, like Tina Russell (RIP), Barbara Bourbon and Lysa Thatcher.

Wow, Tina Russell! So you're definitely from the porn generation before mine. I mean, I talk about the floodgates opening when Ginger Lynn and Christy Canyon entered the scene. Folks, Tina Russell was the very porn actress to emerge as somewhat of a celebrity - at least a talk show guest and a name in the public conscience. This is before Linda Lovelace, before Marilyn Chambers - hell, before Watergate. Tina Russell was the first woman to make it rain.

This was the 8mm film era, when everything was still very experimental, and sound would have required an extra investment. Back then, it was amazing enough just to see women getting naked. Along comes Tina, who had maybe the first high-quality, high-class body ever to give sex on film before an audience greater than a hundred people. Most girls who got naked on the camera clinched their asses because they were too self-conscious to let their pubic areas show. Tina comes along, this great looking woman - not "nice looking stripper" great, but "I can see myself making a life with this woman" great - fully confident, spreading her legs, and exposing her full vagina. Most of the performers in scenes were doing this just to have fun; Tina looked like she was taking this pretty seriously. She leveraged her public exposure, she wrote a book "Porno Star," and she got on the second-rate, local TV talk show circuit. Here's part of her story from The Rialto Report.

Mind you, this was the early '70s. At this time in America, many people did not know that oral sex existed. A great many people never had sex for enjoyment at all during their lifetimes - they procreated because it was necessary to have children. So this idea that you would willingly put another person's sexual organ in your mouth was bizarre, perhaps sacrilegious. Where I grew up, adult human beings did not know what the phrase "Deep Throat" referred to. Why would a throat be a taboo thing? Why are people giggling about this? Isn't "Deep Throat" about a baritone opera singer?

Felix, you were there and I wasn't, so please confirm this for me: Tina Russell comes along and very sublimely, quite naturally, gives a guy head. People did not know that couples did this. (Surely the Bible says something about not doing this, about God getting mad, doesn't it?) I can imagine folks in the audience, surely expecting to see sex (so they weren't offended), still shocked enough to see a man's tongue going into Tina's pussy. Can you do this? Isn't it poisonous? What would happen if my girl and I tried this? We've read about this thing called an "orgasm," but we thought it was fantasy.

And so on the talk show circuit, I recall reading, Tina Russell would be seated between the host and the other guest, who was perhaps some city councilman who was there to talk about a public works project, and the guys want to ask her something that confirms she has actually put a man's penis in her mouth. But they can't say this, because it's broadcast TV. If they were freaked out by the idea, they wouldn't have invited her on the set to begin with. So they're curious, but they can't just come right out with it. They can only approach her with questions like, "Aren't you worried you're committing a sin?"

Whether Tina would be considered a great performer by modern standards doesn't really matter much to me. Hedy Lamarr bared a good part of her body and faked an orgasm in "Ecstasy" in 1933, and you can see she knew she was beautiful and was fully aware of what she was accomplishing. I think Tina Russell had to have felt the same way. (She may have been a little high at the time, but she still felt it.)

Gearing up for a nice nostalgic weekend! Wife will be away so I took advantage of a sale on Adult Empire. Now a proud owner and Jada Fire is Squirtwoman 1-4. That's a lot of time with those juicy tits of hers.

I definitely like the access we have. The ease of it all. But those days in video stores, good times. I get reminded of those places whenever I smell a cleaning solution with bleach. Hated those sticky floors :)

And she's smart too. As she was maybe the very first of the US adult goddesses to release a book

Oh, I hear ya, I'm totally nostalgic for the "good old days". I started watching porn in the late 70's as a 16-year old in Atlanta, sneaking in to adult movie theaters to see Desiree Cousteau, Kay Parker and others. In my college years in the early 80s, I started doing the video arcade thing in adult bookstores. I loved the thrill of it.sneaking into a store while hoping you're not noticed going in, maybe peeking at a Cheri or Hustler magazine for a minute or two, perhaps browsing the sex toy section for a moment, all before locking myself into a small room to watch a few channels of glorious smut. All of the various adult bookstores I ventured into had the same smell, or odor, or maybe even an aroma, as well. I can still smell that smell to this day. By the 90s, of course, I had the ability to watch VHS tapes in the comfort of my own apartment. But I was still heavily drawn to the seediest red light districts I could find. The seedier the strip club, the better. If I had a peep show or two to choose from, all the better. And if a particular club had a porn star as a feature dancer, sweet! It's been really kind of sad the last 15 years or so to watch so much of that go away.

Totally agree with the sentiment. I will never forget the first porn video I saw, in the late 90s. I walked into a bricks-and-mortar porn shop, and shelled out over $80 (all of my disposable cash, at the time) for a VHS copy of Sorority Stewardesses, which introduced me to the stunning Patricia Kennedy:

Nostalgia is a strange thing because it often tricks us into remembering things in a better light than they probably were. Case in point. My introduction to porn were movies made in the 70's and 80's. I have fond memories of those early day porn movies but it's hard for me to forget that while many of those movies had superior scenarios to almost anything made in modern time. The sex scenes were usually short, badly lit, didn't offer many different angles to the action and let's not forget the rampant bait and switch that producers used to promote their movies. That said those movies still starred what I consider to be amazing performers that usually elevated the material.

It's easier to be nostalgic with porn made in the 90's because by then you had a greater quantity of porn to choose from, producers had fixed a lot of the stuff lacking in early porn movies and it was easier to see that porn.

Nostalgia or not, the GG side of porn was objectively better in the early 2010s (not that long ago, I know lol).

Performers are now almost encouraged to do nothing besides piss everywhere and hump strap-ons like frat boys, and hardly engage in the sex activities because directors have them overly concerned with acting out characters instead of getting intimate.

^I've always been a huge fan of lesbian porn and while there are some great lesbian scenes form the golden age of porn. The vast majority of my favorite all time lesbian videos/movies are all from 2001 to about 2012.

I'll ask the resident expert on this subject Lezzyist to please verify what I'm saying here, but in my memory of traveling the US during the late '80s and '90s, regardless of the mix of what was actually being produced, porn shops tended to relegate lesbian sex features to the "fetish" shelves. I'd see maybe one shelf marked "All Girl" in-between the shelf for "Bare Feet" and the one for "Latex." In the theaters, on the private in-room players, and especially on those expensive pay-per-view channels the hotels would offer for premium fees, the features tended to be skewed towards scenes where the girls depended on penises to get off.

Sure, the features they did show had maybe one scene in the middle where two, maybe three, girls arrive home from a party, the guy or guys haven't shown up yet, and they get so horny waiting for the men to arrive that they end up playing meekly with each other. Here the actresses act like they've never had lesbian sex before, probably because they haven't. It looks and feels a little weird, but they'll try it out, and it feels surprisingly okay. But then the men arrive at last to save the day, and now the girls can stop working on each other and really get down to action. Lesbian scenes that you would actually see in this era, were like the asparagus that Midwestern steak restaurants feel they're obliged to serve, even though they have no idea how to properly cook it.

Meanwhile, great lesbian porn was actually being produced, particularly by Bruce Seven. The Buttslammers series was fabulous stuff - a thick, rich, condensed confection, like a homemade walnut fudge, packed to the 9's with gorgeous girls of all races getting each other off. Not just little pets with their tongues, but fat toys, strap-ons, and implements of destruction you'd never see in the theaters. I believe Bruce Seven and Exquisite must have had great success selling into the home video market, to viewers (unlike me at that time) who had the space to stash their massive VHS porn collections. Bruce Seven didn't treat lesbian action as a side dish. Buttslammers was great, resplendent, oiled-up women having orgasms that were better than most on-screen orgasms, performed by women who knew how to have orgasms and thus how to give them. With cameras that got so close to the apertures you'd think their lenses would melt.

So while great lesbian productions did exist in the '90s, I didn't really know how great they were until I could watch them on archival sites like Adult Empire. Seriously, these girls were so good, you wonder why they continued to use men in scenes at all. I used to think Debi Diamond was an overrated performer, but I now realize it's because she was so much better in a lesbian combo.

I guess you could say I'm nostalgic for... that time in the 2010s when I discovered that lesbian orgy flicks from the '90s were some of the best porn ever produced.

I totally agree. Istill watch scenes from the 90s and early 2000s.

It's all factorywork nowadays. Too much comedy and I also loved the color in the old scenes. Loved the scenes of Jim Holiday, Jay Sin, Bruce Seven, Patrick Collins

I wouldn't know, RFB3. I was a kid in the 90s. The fetish shelves makes sense for it though, in my opinion. The genre is still niche, relatively speaking.

I feel the same. I think we are about the same age. The porn I saw back then - Private's Pierre Woodman era! Christoph Clark's Euro Angels! Tricia Devereaux! - got me excited and aroused in a way no porn has done since. I have watched a lot of porn since then, and enjoyed some of it, but I just don't appreciate the aesthetic's of latter-day porn as much as those of 90's porn. To me, it isn't just nostalgia - I really think that the mid-to-late 90's were a true golden age of porn. Of course, there was a lot of crap produced also, and some of the female performers had horrible boob jobs and some of the male performers looked hideous. The lighting and photo quality left a lot to be desired by today's standards. Still, I find these old porn flicks more erotic than today's clinically-clean looking (yet super hardcore) porn. It might seem like a silly thing to say, but I think that a lot of today's porn lack soul.

My dudes, what a walk on memory lane...
Reading this thread, i've just remembered how much i have enjoyed the Debi Diamond x Bionca combo that was pure fire, or the Summer Cummings x Skye Blue that handled the bdsm part brilliantly.
Tiffany Mynx and Felecia ate pussy and ass like nobody's business.
Chloe Nicole could cum like no other.
Rebecca Lord that represented Europe with great success. And speaking of Europe, who could forget Milla or Kelly Stafford - not only incredibly beautiful, but incredibly nasty too.
God, so many girls to remember and mention.
Also, the scenes where short and to the point. About 1 minute in, the performers were already transitioning to the sex and somehow an 18 minutes scene completely overshadows today's 50 minutes scenes.

Maybe I'm crazy, but...does anyone else miss 90s/00s porn music? I know, most of it was hokey, but somehow really cranked up the eroticism in a lot of scenes I recall (and still watch)...

No doubt there were talented musicians who worked in adult films. I'm reminded of a quote from Phil Spector when talking about the rise of racier, sexier videos on Mtv at the time of the Erotica CD and book in the mid-90s

"The difference between Madonna videos and porno movies is that some porno movies have pretty good music."

And what was interesting during that too was how some of the big stars were becoming mainstream. Jenna Jameson, who I didn't really watch that much but loved her spreading Club Magazine, was seen outside of porn advertisements.

Maybe I'm nostalgic for it because I'm about to turn 45 and I'm just tired of the grind. So it could be I miss the days where I can just spend hours in an adult video store and not have to explain to anyone where I am and what I'm doing.

But I do appreciate the stuff that was introduced to me! I love the awful plots, bad acting and cheesy porn music now! Having fun going through my catalog of late 90's- early 00's videos.

Another thing that bothers me about porn today, now this is just a small thing, but they always have the girl take her shoes off during the scene. I love when then have those nice heels on. Why take them off? And they'll do the same with thigh highs! Keep those on!

^ Personally, I much prefer when they lose the shoes, but keep the stockings. Funny, that sort of thing didn't use to matter to me at all, but now, it is almost mandatory for me to truly enjoy a scene.

I remember when I turned 18 and was able to buy porn. I when to stationary store a couple towns over so no one would recognize me and bought a Hustler July 1997 mag. Unfortunately for me, all the local adult video stores were all 21 and over and were strict with IDing people. But I drove around and explored some areas and eventually found those 18 and over places. Then the collection started. Hustler, Cheri, Club, Gent, Genesis, Fox, Score, Swank.. What a great time.
