I've noticed something about myself. I find I get very offended when people talk about sex openly. Like at the bar with my friends or even on TV in talk shows. Usually its worse when I'm not getting any (with the obvious reasons). I don't know what it is, I'm a filthy fucker myself with all the porn i've got.

Does anyone else find this or is it just me. Sometimes its so offensive that I actually find it can hurt my feelings. Usually if there is women talking about it its even worse. Now there must be some underlying mental problem, don't you think?

Your thoughts would be great.

I don't really care for it either, at least not in mixed company. Some people are just naturally open with others, but a lot of others are very competitive about how much sex they get--both men and women--and like everyone to know it.

More info, sanchez -- is it what nietzsche mentioned, people talking about their exploits? Like me? (I never thought about it like that - I'm just very extroverted, and happy for people when good things happen for them; I don't do it to be competitive).

Or is it just the topic of sex in general?

When you were a kid, did your parents talk openly, honestly, and unashamedly about sex with you? Or was the topic slightly taboo, whispered about, considered "private", maybe even dirty?

I have only certain friends I can talk about that stuff with. Ironically they're not my best friends. I’ve never talked about sex with the guys or gals I’ve grown up with and known most of my life. Maybe I just don't want them to find out about my dark side.

General talk about sex doesn't bother me, and I participate and usually enjoy it.

However 'locker room' talk is usually bragging and far too often it degenerates into putting down the person that they are talking about. I don't appreciate the downgrading talk.

the only time it has bothered me is if it's about someone
hooking up with someone I want to hook up with...
then I'd really prefer not to hear about it...
I don't kiss and tell

I'm fine as long as I'm gettin some

What bothers me is that I don't feel free to discuss my taste (obsession?) with my porn collection. I just dealt with a stranger by email about a DVD burn problem and I realized I can't talk to any of my friends about this stuff.

I did buy "Sexual Anorexia" by Patrick Carnes and in the opening chapter he mentions feelings of embarrassment about openly discussing sex. In other words, you or I may be embarrassed to discuss sexual issues with our friends but we buy porn as a substitute. He says it is a way we deal with avoiding real sex. T.T. Boy brought this book up in one of the discussion groups and it looks interesting just from skimming it.

I think I am kind of similar. I am not comfortable talking about sex in public with anyone. I dislike hearing about it in conversations and go out of my way to avoid such occasions. I get a mixture of an ashamed/sickly feeling when sex is the topic. I can only feel comfortable with the subject when I am alone.

The only person I'm comfortable talking about sex with is my fiancee.

Sex talk is ok with me if it's not in some place where I can't leave if I become uncomfortable. (ie work place) For example, when I was working at Stanford Robotics Lab, I use to hate it when my co-worker would come into my office and wanted to talk about sex. He even started asking me questions that are very offensive and degrading to me. That is totally not good with me. But if it's in a bar where I can freely walk away if I don't like the topic, I don't see any problem. Heck, I might even join in on the discussion.
