"Lisa Ann called up and said, 'I have a gig for you, girl/girl.' I said, 'Great, who with?' She said, 'Ginger Lynn.' I said, 'Ohmigod, we've never worked together in 25 years!'" Yep, it's true. Nina was a newbie, having arrived in March of '84, as Ginger's star was rapidly rising - but Ginger had more or less retired from XXX five years later, and somehow their sexual paths had never crossed. "I certainly was attracted to her because she was the prettiest bisexual girl I'd ever met to that point, in that 'conventionally pretty/would never do it' looking way," Hartley recalled. "I guess I was just never considered a big enough star to work with her; I don't know why it never happened, but it never did. And then, in her first comeback, for VCA, she made White Lightning, and [director] Veronica Hart had decided to have us do a scene together. I was supposed to play her therapist, and one part of me said, 'I cannot portray a therapist who sleeps with her client; I can't,' so in the end, I had Ginger's character masturbate next to me. I just couldn't do it. And Veronica was going, 'What? What? It's porn! What do you care?' And I said, 'I can't do it; I can't.' Of all the wrong things to do, that was the wrongest. So I just thought that was all terribly amusing." But that was eight years ago, and the pair haven't starred together since. "In the meantime, I've been on her radio show a few times, and we fooled around a little bit, but you can't do penetration on the Playboy show, so it was fun but it wasn't the real thing," Hartley explained. "And once we were going to try to get together off-camera and play, and that fell through - but here it is, and I'm bringing my best strap-on, baby. And I hope it's not going to be one of those movies where it's all eye-gazing and face-stroking and delicate restraint, because Ginger and I have a lot to make up for. When it comes to chicks, I'm down for it, and Ginger - I've had enough flirtation with her to know just what kind of ride she is. Ooh, baby!" Nina's not the only one who's juiced about the match-up. "We're really, really, really excited about it," said director Kathryn Annelle of Triangle Films. "Obviously, it's not always possible, but I try to shoot women who've never shot before at Triangle, and I don't think we've ever had two stars as big as these together. I'm sure it'll be beautiful; no doubt in my mind." Triangle's Intimate Invitation series was nominated for Best All-Girl Series at last January's award show, so the talent behind the camera is certainly first-rate ... and with Ginger's and Nina's legions of fans, the encounter is something a lot of viewers will be looking forward to.
