I think you're not looking at the big picture. You're looking at today's picture and transferring it backwards for all time. I was 18 back in 1987 and I can say unequivocally that the modern-day notion of what it means to be a Republican wasn't even a twinkle in its daddy's eye back then. Back in those days, there was a large segment of the population that was called "Reagan Democrats": people with all kinds of liberal ideas but voted for Reagan twice in two landslides. And to illustrate the difference between Republicans then and now--George Bush Sr., when he ran against Ronald Reagan in the Republican primaries in 1980 was the guy who coined the term "Voodoo Economics" to describe Reagan's goal to cut capital gains tax rates to spur economic growth instead of raising taxes. Sounds like something a Democrat would say, right? It is more accurately called "dynamic scoring" and is now the meat-and-potatoes of fiscal conservatism and is a very well understood and articulated concept nowadays amongst Republicans. It wasn't back then. Not even close. And the fact that a prominent Republican could run against it back then and then jump on the Republican ticket just tells you just how amorphous the core ideas of the party were back then. Eisenhower, Nixon and Ford had way different brands of Republicanism than what is ubiquitous today. The well-defined presentation of "conservatism" and "neo-conservatism" and "tea-partyism" that we know today is largely the result of alternative media that were not even born yet in 1987.
