I wasn't sure where to put this, but it seemed appropriate for the feature side.
My review of Jill C. Nelson's book Golden Goddesses: 25 Legendary Women of Classic Erotic Cinema, 1968-1985.

This is a great book. I really liked the chapters on Candida Royalle, Serena, Juliet Anderson, Julia St Vincent and Roberta Findlay as their stories were newer to me.
I agree that it struck me that whether or not they enjoyed or regretted or were ambivalent about their time in porn none of these women were the wrecks haunted by their porn past that so many would expect.

BTW there's an excellent interview with Jody Maxwell by Robin Bougie in one of his Cinema Sewer collections by FAB press.

^ Excellent. Thanks for the tip! I had read a lot about Candida Royalle in the past due to her popping up in just about every book on feminism and porn there is. The other women though, in spite of their star status, I knew very little about. The book is a goldmine.

It sounds like an excellent book. Even though I'm familiar with most of them as porn stars, I know almost nothing about them as people. That includes the biggest names.

Hey, you're quoted on the Amazon page's "Editorial reviews." Cool.
I just went through your site to buy it. I hope you're in the Amazon kickbacks program. (Just the Kindle edition, though, the $49 hardcover edition seems a bit pricey.)
Apropos of nothing, the listings in the "Customers who bought this item also bought" bar were: Jenna Jameson's book, Penny Flame's book, Ron Jeremy's book, Ashley Blue's book, Tera Patrick's book and ... Sammy Hagar's book. Hmm.

^ Hey thanks for noticing! That's really cool. :) I don't have any kickbacks...I never even thought about that.

I don't know how much you'd get from an Amazon associates program anyway, the porn offerings are pretty slim. I see now that they have the Misty Beethoven blu ray, though. Pamela Mann, too.

Not only that, they sell Waterpower, Femmes de Sade, and Forced Entry among other batshit crazy hardcore. I guess they don't know what they're selling.

Those FEMMES DESADE releases are totally illegal bootlegs. The rightsholder will hopefully be putting a stop to them soon.

So I finally started looking at this book. It's arranged in what seem like pretty self-contained chapters about the individual stars, so I skipped right to the first two I felt like reading about: Veronica Hart and Christy Canyon. So far, I'm not impressed by the writing.
The interviewing may have gone well, but the parts in between the long slabs of transcription honestly came off as very amateurish to me, often written in a term-paperish style and riddled with alarmingly eye-rolling and bizarre errors -- from the grammatical to citing years that don't add up. Really, Spider-Man starred "Tobey McQuire"? There are "Toni" awards for the stage? It doesn't give me faith in the accuracy of anything in there.
But the block quotes were often quite interesting, and Hart's personality really comes through in hers. I'll keep reading for that reason.
