I'm looking for a method, to lighten up selected areas of an image in Photoshop, without producing stark differences of contrast with the non-selected areas, in effect, more of a gradient casting of light.
Using the rendering filter would seem the clear answer, and somtimes works, but all too often ends up casting a darker shade in other areas, producing more of a directional effect.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
