In days gone bye porn used to simulate the senses - hot sex, good actors/actresses, decent themes, reasonable storylines etc...
Now there is no build up, no tension just hardcore slamming. I find it less and less erotic. There's something for everyone but IMHO the sex now is just way too extreme and over the top. Folks will need to push the envelope more and more just to achieve the same level of arousal previously realized. What happed to 1 Man 1 Woman having GREAT sex - vag, oral or anal?
Not -ing, just the thoughts of one man.

Well like everyone allways say: porn is fantasy. When you watch porn you wants to see something that you won't or you wouldnt find in real life. I mean, you can go out, find a girl and have vaginal sex and maybe anal sex with her; is something common.
But is not so easy to find a girl that let you cum inside her ass and fart the cum out, or give her an enema, ore fist her, or any other act that you see today in porn. You can pay a prostitute, but hey, to rent a movie is cheaper.

Emphatically yes. Creativity doesn't seem to be in the vocabulary of porn these days.

Erotic is subjective.
The way you (musiqman) describe erotic in the original post is not something I find erotic.

Perhaps nowadays porn movies are less erotic because they have a lot less erotic suspense than the old movies had.
I remember watching Uschi Digart in 1970's films where her sex performances with the guys were almost soft-core. But the erotic suspense in her scenes was incredible.
Uschi didn't just come into the scene naked and ready to fuck the way girls usually do it now. She came fully clothed in a fairly conservative blouse and skirt. And over the course of the scene during her interaction with a guy or two, that blouse of hers got loosened and unbuttoned a little. And with Uschi bending all over the place with the guys, her nice big natural tits strained, jiggled, and bulged out of her half-unbuttoned blouse like two hot whores mooning the guys.
I literally sat on the edge of my chair biting my nails and watching Uschi's every move with my eyes bulging out of their sockets. And when one of her nice, big, long, natural tits eventually did fly free from her restraining blouse. Then I almost fell off my chair right there and then.
Today's movies have so little suspense and surprise built into them that you can more or less tell what happens in the movie simply by looking at its box-cover. You don't even need to watch the movie.
Perhaps Rocco Siffredi is a little better than most film directors in terms of having some erotic surprise and suspense in his films.
In his award-winning anal scene in 'Animal Trainer #5', Rocco starts out innocently enough in a 1 on 1 with a girl in a room on a boat. But then a bunch of his team-mates barge in and discover him riding the girl's nice ass. They beg him to let them in on the action. After some reluctant hee-hawing, Rocco eventually agrees. And a scorchingly hot anal gang-bang this girl really gets from all of the guys.
The erotic surprise in this scene happened when 5 or 6 guys unexpectedly barged in on Rocco having anal sex with his girl. The erotic suspense was in whether Rocco would let them have a piece of the girl's nice ass or chase them away.
And the gratifying relief was in the scorchingly hot anal gang-bang this nice lady got from all of the guys.
No wonder this scene was judged to be the best anal scene of the year.
Perhaps this award-winning anal scene is a good example of how to make sex interesting and exciting even in Gonzo films. I certainly would like to see more of this Rocco-type erotic surprise and suspense in today's porn films.
There is no good reason why the girl can't come to the scene fully clothed and gradually loose her clothing during her interaction with the guys. And there is no good reason why all of the guys have to arrive together as a team.
Why not spread out the action a bit and surprise the viewer with a nice big tit 'accidently' busting out of the lady's loose blouse. And why not surprise the viewer with a couple of horny guys busting in on an inexperienced girl who is having sex with her guy? If the two busters persuade the girl to let them have some action too. Then another erotic surprise could be in store for the girl and the viewer. An eager guy who can't wait would immediatly jump on top of the astonished girl and DP, DAP, or DPP her right there and then.
It's always nice to see an 'innocent' girl open up her mouth to suck extra guys and get astonished with a double surprise from two horny guys stretching her pussy and/or ass.

Also, quality seem to slide as well. Girls are wearing more makeup, looking more tired, and the guys are as creepy as ever. The reason is probably because of the sheer volume of porn being made. Companies figure they will make more money if they release more movies.

Yes it has. Trying to win the Nobel Prize in physics or emulating the Chinese Acrobats of Taiwan seems to be a higher priority than getting performers who obviously have the hots for each other together. Not to mention the fascination with gapes. Are we suppose to stick our dicks in a girls ass or throw a football through it? Outrageousism is replacing eroticism.

I agree with most of what is said here. Especially the gaping. It's not that it grosses me out, it's just not impressive and I've often said in reviews it's more of a novelty act. You show it once or twice..fine. It's more out of curiousity. But 10+ times?

I was watching "Something So Right" and the build-up between April Flowers and Randy Spears was progressing along so nicely. She catches his attention by faking a skating accident. Works her way up into his apartment for a little doctoring and flirty eyes. Comes back the next day to cook him a meal as a thank-you. They cook and flirt. They eat and flirt. They kiss across the table.
Cut to them butt naked. Fucking on a dining chair.
What just happened? All those delicious possibilities...gone. All that build-up was good, but it could have been better.
I think life in general has become more frantic. People are used to not waiting for anything. They want it now, now, NOW!!
So porn is like that too.

I'm not sure if I completely agree about the gaping.
I don't like the artificial showing off of gapes and the interruption of sex action that goes along with it. But I do like to see some natural gaping, where the girl naturally leaves her asshole open because the guy who pulled out gave it to her so hard between the cheeks.

Only if you want to water down the meaning of that word to the point where it becomes too general and thus less useful as a meaningful designation. One of the main themes running through the various definitions of "erotic" is the idea of sexual love or desire. Each definition of course includes the more encompassing idea of sexual arousal, which seems to be what you're referring to when you describe your response to various types of pornography, but if that's all there is to it, why even bother having that word around to begin with? Imagine if someone came up to you and said he thought the winter weather in Alaska was "balmy", and then another person came up and claimed the weather in Death Valley was "balmy", and yet another person came up and said the weather in southeast Asia during monsoon season was "balmy." If you allowed such a word to be subjective and all-encompassing, it would be useless because you'd never know what the hell someone was talking about if he or she threw it out there.
I'm sure there are folks out there who would be turned on - that is, sexually aroused - by seeing some prepubescent teen raped, pissed and shit on, but should we call that erotic because it happens to get someone's dick hard and allows him to indulge in a fantasy? That's a pretty extreme example, but how about a scene in which a disinterested ,or better yet, distressed, girl is throat fucked and slapped around. What about a simple 1 on 1 vag only scene where the female is obviously bored by the action and even repulsed by the male performer. If someone happens to be aroused by such scenarios, should we call that type of porn "erotic"? We could, but it's makes a hell of a lot more sense to just say this or that porn act is a turn on, or say like Festus, "Erotic not so exciting" if that is how one happens to view things.
Basically, I believe that porn which we term "erotic" should involve either a real element or, much more likely, a convincing portrayal of sexual desire from the performers in a scene be it soft or hard. Such an erotic element doesn't have to be in the form of soft-lit, slow-motion, "dipping strawberries in chocolate" fare, it can be injected into many different types of scenes provided the right performers are used: attractive, charming, personable male performers that don't look and act as if they just spent the afternoon pawing and shrieking at a black monolith somewhere in the African desert, and females who are professional, engaging, and not afraid to smile, clutch at, and even (gasp!) kiss their partner(s). I expect, however, that such portrayals of enjoyment - especially from the females - would probably be quite the turnoff for a number of viewers out there. "Oh, she's smiling, is she? Smack her, smack her!"

Could not have said it any better! There is a core group of "fans" out there who seem to believe that unless sex is degrading (and I mean having a range of acts from gagging to spitting alongside gapping) it is not worth watching it.
To answer the question of the OP directly: precisely because nowadays 99% of the films could be described simply as meat-pounding I find myself going back to more and more classic titles from the early 90s.
Quality is at all time low!

I am sorry but this is total nonsense...what criterion are you using to describe "fantasy". Different people have different fantasies and for you to generalize that only something "you wouldn't find in real life" constitutes an erotic act is flat out wrong!

Eroticism to me is the building up of sexual desire - of longing or hunger for someone.
I don't think perfomers are nearly as good at portraying it as they used to be. Again, the fast-food drive-thru culture our generation has grown up in. It takes time for lustful ruminations to simmer. That's why we're left searching for performers that have actual chemistry. This didn't seem to matter so much back in the day. Selena Steele said she didn't like fucking Marc Wallice. Coulda fooled me. Hyapatia Lee apparently didn't like Rocco Siffredi. I never would have guessed in a million years. Because they could convincingly portray sexual desire.
Or maybe some of the performers could if they were given half a chance by the directors.
"Naughty America"'s vignettes give these girls a chance to shine and most of them fall flat on their face. They just don't know how to seduce.
I remember watching the BTS of "Cum Rain Cum Shine" and bless Tiana Lynn's little horny heart but when Patrick Collins asked her how she would seduce her boyfriend's dad, without a moment's hesitation, she immediately dropped her top. Yeah that gets the job done, but it's so unerotic it's pathetic.

Less erotic, more predictable, action that is too alike from one scene to the next, YES. Sometimes I want extreme just to see girls acting really dirty. But not every time I see a video.
I usually depend on videos with Rocco or Joey Silvera to deliver the goods on a regular basis. They build a rapport with each woman they partner with. That makes the women hotter and the action more real. And spontaneous.

Most porn hasn't been truly erotic for years. Sex always sells so it doesn't have to be. It doesn't have to be any better than it needs to be in order to sell enough units to make everybody in the production process happy. Sloppy mass manufacture makes more money than slower, careful production.
There's no reason why it needs to be erotic from a strictly financial standpoint. And therein lies the problem. It's a business.

The only erotic thing about most porn releases these days are the actual box covers where the girls will look really hot. Once you see the film itself, its usually a major let down due to the fact its another typical gonzo style feature...i.e. young naked female used for 2 or more males gratification as they pummel the life out of her. Not exactly a turn on is it?
Pity no one in the industry has the foresight to see this. If they brought less product out and concentrated on making better movies instead of the usual shove it up my ass and cum all over my face while all the while treating me like a piece of shit and filming extreme close ups of the inside of my battered and sore asshole volume 98 type stuff they could actually make more money as I'd think more people would start buying porn again for that secret fantasy thrill we used to get. Porn has become very cold and to be honest pointless.

Perhaps one of the reasons why today's movies are less erotic is because porn actresses don't have any acting skills at all.
When the camera focuses on the lady's face. And she doesn't clearly express any emotion with her face. Then looking at her facial close-up is a disappointment for the viewer.
I think that even some rudimentary training for porn actresses in expressing emotions with one's face would make their performances a lot more erotic and hot.
Perhaps a lady who takes an a2m with a clear expression of disgust on her face would look more hot than a lady who makes it look easy and routine. It's the effort the lady makes to please the guys that makes it look good.
One of the reasons why Rebeca Linares is popular with many porn fans nowadays is because she often clearly expresses emotions with her face. Her smile is very nice. And her slight sense of panic about being stretched out too much by two big double-dicking guys in a flying DP you can clearly see on her face too.

Yes, there is, and this thread proves it (and so is the enormous success of the Fashionistas...which enhances a very particular aspect of the sex act). The fact that most consumers who crave the eroticism members are discussing here happen to be less vocal than those who go after "gaping" for example does not prove the opposite. The posts above are also an excellent example why.
Christoph Clark's latest series DTF I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, were inspired precisely by the lack of enhanced pre-game in the majority of product sold. Granted he still resorts to "extreme" techniques the fact of the matter is pre-game now serves a specific role (which was once a mandatory feature as well).
Elsewhere, on another forum, I've made my thoughts on the subject very clear: after the massive success of gonzo, which I believe now has had an impact on the entire industry, porn will either have to reinvent itself by expanding the pre-sex/after-sex aspects or see a massive hit in sales (which is happening to a certain extent). The middle part, where all the meat-pounding occurs, is pretty much covered by the studios.

"Has Porn Become Less Erotic?"
Apparently this is a popular sentiment and most people say yes. However, for me the question raised is much too general. It is like asking: "Has rock music become less creative?" Ehhh, what do you mean? That rock bands anno 2007 make music that is less interesting than say 10, 20 or 30 years ago? That can only be tested by taking the best contemporary records e.g. by Dream Theater and Arctic Monkeys and comparing them to those of similar artists say Queensrijche and U2. You could also start with classic rock bands say Led Zeppelin or King Crimson and see whether there are nowadays any similar bands.
Now less return to porn. Tell me in which era porn was more erotic than nowadays. Give me some examples of top erotic porn of 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Do you think it has withstood time well, meaning it is still watchable anno 2007? How this it compare with current couples/feature releases?

I'd say porn is less erotic. That's one reason why I dig older flicks by Buttman, or even Jules Jordan (the "Bottom Feeders" & "Heavy Metal" series). Rocco's flicks are very erotic, but there's too much attention being spent on actual fucking or the roughness of it. And too much time is being spent on the graphics (the view of the actual anus, vagina, gapes and shit). There's not a lot of tease going on. And if there is tease, it isn't classy. That's why I like flicks by Buttman, Justin Slayer and even Bang Bros. Their flicks has class. Even Rocco's flicks have class. Even though Jake Malone's flicks are very rough, even he's got some class about his shit! Everything else is pretty much trashy.
That's why EVIL ANGEL is the greatest porno company!

Look at it this way - I used to walk through porn meadow and see a hundred weeds and a couple of wild flowers. Yes, there were plenty of weeds, but the flowers were still easy to see. Now the meadow is covered in weeds and, while the ratio may be the same, it's almost impossible to find the flowers.

Perfectly stated. Trying to sort out the cream of the crop from the ocean of mediocrity (and just plain junk) is next to impossible. You'll find a few gems now and then but unless you're a voracious consumer, they'll probably be few and far in between. And even then, it'll be pure luck. It was always hard but now....

I think many of the studios could care less about the acting. Take Gonzo movies for instance they have no plot no theme and many of the scenes are absolutely and totally disjointed - no connection to each other at all.
I think porn has gone so far, that noting will prevail but circus acts. Now I am not down on the industry as a whole but far too many films just plain suck. For instance, I just reviewed two movies recently with different titles but from the same production company - but the actors, most of the actresses, location, and sex scenes were far too similar. I mean GUYS what's up with that.
Fellas where to we go from here? What's next? - a head up someones ASS talk about a gape. No I got it, an entire leg. Yeah that erotic.

+1 Separating the cream from the crop is not so hard when there is enough cream. But nowadays the cream if increasingly more difficult to find. Jewel said it best in another post here. She finds that today much of the talent is lacking professionalism. This same them can be carried over into the behind the scenes management/ownership of these companies. Now for some of you hat might get all bent out of shape - my statement is not meant to be a blanket statement for the entire industry. But I do feel that the quality and creativity and the eroticism is on a downward spiral.

Well, we all seem to agree on it. But where do you go from here? Back to some of the feature-structured production from the early 80s, start weeding the "talent", etc?
You must agree that there isn't much left for the directors to juggle with! In fact, aside from a few of the older directors I must honestly say that there are a very few producers/directors out there that excite me with their work (hope this does not sound too negative).

It's easy to find titles that are well-made ... but there's a lot more crap. And you know something's wrong when I stop jerking off to porn and start cranking it to Vice magazine!
I am finding stuff like the "Daddy Thing" line from Elegant to be very appealing. I'd enjoy a return to vignette porn.

I think what is being overlookedd here is that plot, acting etc is not needed for a scene to be incredibly hot. Foreplay is very important, but it doesn't have to be generated by plot. Look at Tia Tanaka's scene in Tease Me Please Me 5. There is loads of foreplay and eroticism in that scene yet there is no plot or actual movie stuff. Eroticism is all about the interaction between performers that goes beyond the actual penetration and oral stuff. Eye contact, body language, kissing are all huge. And in that scene mentioned above there were no edits/cuts except at the very begginning and before the pop shot. The lack of cuts is very sexy, but of course you have to have strong performers who are into each other.

I think lack of eroticism in most porn is a real problem, and its related to a couple other threads that are running concurrently with this one, "Why is most lesbian porn so horrible?" (about the lack of eroticism and heat in most girl/girl porn) and "What's the next hottest thing to do in porn?" (about what the next extreme "stunt" that will become big in porn). I think this says it all – a lot of people are crying out for real heat and passion in porn, and all the industry is offering is ever more extreme circus shit to appeal to an audience of Beavis and Buttheads. Its sad, really.
This is something I've blogged about before – I fundamentally hate the idea that "erotic" and "pornographic" are seen as somehow opposed to each other. Good porn needs both.
All that said, I'm not sure if there was ever a "golden age" when porn was highly erotic – I've seen a lot of really shitty seventies porn, though at least at that time, people weren't so fucking jaded that it was all about the next extreme stunt. Both during the 1970s and today, porn had its no-talents and its auteurs. There some really nicely done, erotic porn coming out of Europe and in indie porn, particularly in the specialty girl/girl porn market. (Examples – stuff by John B Root, Viv Thomas, Bellezza Video, Abby Winters, Little Mutt, people like that.) 90% of the "product" churned out of the San Fernando Valley studios? The worst kind of dreck, unfortunately.

Hmmm... In the thread titles when I clicked on this one, it was preceded by "Ever seen Cum Spitting a big ass load on an eye?" and followed by "assholes who literally turn inside out :)"
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I'm sure the niches have multiplied. These days there is definitely a higher proportion of movies about gaping assholes and cumspitting etc etc etc than in 1987 or 1997. Are these things by definition non-erotic? No, but I'd say few people find them erotic or can portray them as erotic.
Hey, speaking of cumspitting, how about a series called 'Spittoons', where one girl takes a cumshot in her mouth, or maybe a few cumshots, then another girl gets upside down with her asshole gaping open and the first girl has to try and spit the wad into the gape, from a good distance? No? Oh well, back to the drawing board...

I should say that I think porn has absolutely improved a ton over the years. You just have so much in the way of extreme niches so there is definitely more bad stuff out there than in the past. But, I think the directors and performers who do it "right" have turned out better stuff as well.

I remember a line Season Hubley said in Vice Squad and it is most fitting. She says at one point to her girlfriends in a bar: "Doesn't anybody want a plain fuck anymore".

Definitely. I think it's because porn has been so much more mainstream than it was just 20 years ago. Much of the thrill of sneaking a bootleg copy of a video like "Ginger on the Rocks" into the VCR when the parents weren't home has been lost due to ubiquity.
Luckily, some directors seem to be moving toward less of the interview-blowjob-3 position fuck-guy jerks off on girl's face formula.

In retrospect, I definitely agree with Skyway. The directors and niche producers who know how to get it "right" are definitely doing a great job. In fact, when I last made a list of my Top 20 favorite porn scenes, it was almost all stuff from within the last 5 years.
When looking at the abysmal state of the "average", that's a fact that's easy to loose track of.

In general yes.....but there some labels uprising,
that are turning back to the roots of erotic amateur
porn, like the australian Abby Winters.
I think most of the WICKED movies are erotic, even if they are very professionally done. It depends on the women.
But the usual Vince Voyeur etc. This isnt very erotic.
Some models are erotic, but they deserve better movies.

@Dan, I have strongly to disagree,
look at e.g. Kaylani Lei, she has great acting abilities,
( "Angel X", "...unleashed" )
or at Missy, Katsumi and many more, etc.
They have acting skills and act much more better than many
so called "serious" actors.
We have some movies with - for adult XXX - very sophisticated storylines, only a few, but the customer decides, if he wants
to buy/rent a movie with a higher price tag, or if he rents
a cheaper "fuck-suck-orgy-without-sense".

You hit the nail on the head. YES! But look how much cheaper it is to make a film with no story, no plot and just pure sex. All sex has its rewards, especially if there's more variety in positions, but without the erotic element it's like eating candy for dinner, it leaves you unsatisfied in the end.

This is my second biggest pet peeve with porn, right under the crappy directing which I wrote a post on last week. The actors and actresses really don't seem to be into it and when they are, you usually find out later they're boyfriend/girlfriend. You also rarely see any french kissing hetero scenes but plenty of it in lesbian scenes.
I hear Tommy Kaye (who posted on this topic) may be a good choice of directors to look for to find great eroticism, but I'm having a hard time finding his movies and none of the stores out here in Colorado have any of his titles. If you're reading this Tommy, help me out.

The only reason why todays porn has lots its erotic appeal is because theres always some plot or storyline or some behind the scenes stuff that gets in the way of a good porno video....I do belive the big hype of porn and these pornstars today make it almost seem like , its a big hollywood movie screening :( its time to take porn back the factory and start over again
remember..ITS JUST "SEX"
nothing else ,nothing more ...nothing less
JUST "SEX"
now if only more studios like Vivid, Filmco, Wicked, Pleasure Productions, JM, Redlight District, Evil Empire and Elegant Angel would focus more on two popular themes in porn: Lesbian strap-on watersports and Bukkake , then the erotica in porn would come back..remember porn should be about both "SEX" and "EROTICA", something that turns you on and seduces you....long overdrawn plots and behind the scenes storytelling is NOT EROTIC, ITS BORING :)
thats my opinion,
whats yours? :)
