Yes, No, and how? What was their reaction?
lol
I assumed my parents knew I mean I have never been subtle, so I mentioned one day to my mom on the fon that I had been at the Gay Rights Parade the day before and how much fun I had. There was a LONG pause and my dad picks up the line and says in his calmest tone, " Gay Rights Parade? What were you doing there?." "Well someone has to stand up for our rights" came my so sweet and innocent reply.
Needless to say, it was quite entertaining on my side (sweet revenge) and quite a shock to them. It took them a week to regain their composure and make some not so subtle commentary in regards to my "decesion".
Anyway, it's been interesting to try to explain that my heart does not recognise gender and that it was not a "decesion" but simply and acceptance of who I am.
I wanna yell,"Guys, get over it, so sometimes your sweet little girl muff dives" eveytime the topic comes up. lol

I've never come out to my folks...it's kind of the unspoken truth. I mean after 37 years and never having dated a girl!!!
I grew up in a real small town and just dont want to make a big issue out of it. They treat me and my lover fine so....
My lover told his parents and they're not to keen with it. I dont go there and his mom has never even been to our house! We've been here 4 years now!
Anyway, we're happy so thats what counts!!!

I told my parents about six months after I first moved out... That was almost 20 years ago.
They reacted with hurt feelings and ignorance and submerged anger-- all of the normal, programmed reactions you'd expect from people who haven't had any real understanding of the issues... (I come from a conservative, religious, military family background...)
Even then, I knew enough not to take their initial reactions too personally. I knew it would take time, patience and education.
For almost my entire adult life, I've been closer to them than I EVER was as a kid...
In my (biased) opinion, it's a damn shame that most gay men simply "give up" on maintaining an open relationship with their parents. They just say "they'd never understand" -- and then run off into the gay urban ghettos, and let their original family drift into the distance...
I simply MADE my parents grow and learn and understand. Yes, it took years. But I loved them enough that I didn't want to have to "keep mum" about the normal, everyday details of my life...
Maybe it's just not worth the time and effort for some people. It sure was for me. 20 years ago my parents were die-hard Reagan Republicans who hated anyone who was different. Now I have to stop them from trying to "set me up" with any gay person they meet...
