Den Member 911 Posts 9/02 Posted - Aug 7 2006 : 1:11PM I finally gave in and bought the RCA HDV5000 player.
I bought 5 HD DVD movies and they are really good!
But, when I tried to play my only 2 Adult HD DVD discs, they would NOT play.
Help?
[invalid URL removed]Island Fever 3Pirates
They are clearly marked as HD DVD.
They do play in my computer.
Are there any Adult HD DVDs that will play on HD DVD player?
Thanks, Den

I don't think they work because they were formatted for Windows Media Player HD?Just a guess....

Hmmmm.. not sure why it didn't work. We have a HD-DVD player at work and it plays fine on there. There's no regional coding on the DVDs so that can't be the issue.[Link] codybangs Digital Playground 676 Posts 8/04 Posted - Aug 8 2006 : 1:16AM

Well, HD-DVD Player uses WMV so it doesn't matter. Standard DVD Player uses TS.[Link] Den Member 911 Posts 9/02 Posted - Aug 8 2006 : 6:31AM

Neither of those discs are in the HD DVD format. They are both in the Windows Media Video 9 format. That's why they play on your PC. Try putting your mainstream HD DVD's into your PC. I'm certain that they won't play. If they did, then people wouldn't need to buy HD DVD players.[Link] codybangs Digital Playground 676 Posts 8/04 Posted - Aug 8 2006 : 8:09PM

Is that better?

But, Bill, isn't the WMV9 format specifically supported by the HD-DVD specs?AFAIK, HD-DVD players are supposed to be able to read the physical DVD discs too, and I was expecting that, if the files were arranged on the regular DVD disc in the same way as they would be on an HD-DVD disc (just more heavily compressed), the HD-DVD players were supposed to be able to play them.
Have I gotten all that wrong?

No. However, I don't think that it would really be a big deal for HD-DVD players to be able to play WMV9 discs. The two formats essentially use the same codec. They are two slightly different versions of Microsoft's VC-1 codec. At one time, the trades were referring to this codec as WMV9, which is what I think caused some confusion. Here's a thread at AVS Forum specifically discussing these two discs and Toshiba's HD-DVD players.

I'll say there's confusion.From AVS thread:
Pirates and Island Fever 3 are the only titles using the HD DVD name when they shouldn't be. I don't believe there are any others.

Here is the insert that came with Pirates .Small wonder people expect Pirates to play on an HD-DVD player. I certainly did.

Thanks. I forgot about that. I certainly expected it to work on my HD DVD Player. Wonder how Cody got it to work on his HD DVD player at work?
Cody promised to send me new HD DVDs that will play on HD DVD player and I will report back at soon as I get them.
Thanks to everybody for help on this.

Cody, sorry, I don't follow this reply. From a previous post you said, 'We have a HD-DVD player at work and it plays fine on there.'
Do you have a Pirates HD DVD disc that plays on a HD DVD player?
Do you have a Island Fever 3 HD DVD disc that plays on a HD DVD player?
Thanks, Den

I was under the impression before from our guy here that the HD-DVDs did work but I was wrong. So at the moment, no our HD-DVDs(Pirates and IF3) do not work on HD-DVD players, only on PCs that are WMV compliant. Sorry for the confusion.Edited by - codybangs on 8/11/2006 3:17:24 PM

Any idea when the problem will be fixed and DP will offer free replacements for the people who thought they were HD DVDs?I mean, we are only talking about one of them being the DVD of the Year for 2005 (Pirates).
And, I sure hope you don't repeat this error on Insland Fever #04.
Good luck.

Well, I learned it wasn't a problem because at the time when it was authored, the HD-DVD players weren't even out in the market yet. I have heard that we might end up releasing many of our titles in HD-DVD format sometime this year. When I find out more info about some of the HD-DVD specs of Island Fever 4, I'll let you know. Oh yeah, and customers who do request the HD-DVD version when it comes out, we will gladly do a switch for free. That's what I've heard.
