New girl in the office. Outgoing to everyone; not just me. But 2 way text contact everyday last week. Meant to be going to office function last night. I hate them. Tried to get out of it. Said girl definately implies she would like me to be there. Not in the mood. You know the old saying - I'd rather someone thought I was miserable than knew it for sure. Go against my better judgement.

So, off I go. Miserable as sin. Attempt cool indifference on her arrival, and succeed (?) by completing ignoring her. We sit together (this requiring no effort on either part; its just how the seats turned out). She's next to other new starters (I'm nota new starter) so I'm up for that conversation even less. Net result - virtually no effort by me at conversation with her all night.

I offer to get 2nd round in. Off I go to the bar. Male colleague appears in tow with pound notes and extra hands to assist in the expense and transportation of said round. Nice thought that I decided it would be churlish to reject. Half way through giving order to barhand, girl curiously appears 3 foot to my rhs looking over the bar. Why ? If anyone's still reading this they're probably faster at this game than I was. I just thought what the fuck's she standing there for ? And got on with ordering the beers and after a while when I looked again she disappeared. Some time later, said new starters decide to get a round in and divvy it up. Said girl turns to me and says 'can I get you a drink ?' I realise by now what I've done; that I've fucked the whole thing up and deciding there's not much point just sorted of shrugged my shoulders and said 'not really'. I must have delivered this with such bluntness that her enthusiam for enquiriung as to round stopped dead in its tracks not to be reusmed for about 5 minutes later going the other way round the table. Soit gets back round to me and, for the second time of asking ' do you want anything ? 'My reply 'nah'.

Home time. I sort of make by excuses and trundle off. Thing is, said girl and AN Other new starter have converstaion several steps behind me to the effect of 'what a waste of space'.

Now don't get me wrong. I don't flatter myself to think we were going to have, you know, a future life together, and in the long run I doubt I'm really her type but the chance to set up some time with just us would have been nice and it wasn't as if the ground work wasn't in place.

So, and this where you come in :

1. I know I fucked up, but how bad do you think it was.

2. Do you think it's salvagable

3. Do I go in on Monday and make like I didn't give a shit anyway and preserve what dignity I got left OR do I risk looking pathetic and try and salvage it. If so, please give me a hand with how I need to go about that.

TIA

Z.

Well, I think you probably confused the poor girl yes but I don't think it's the end of things.

If it were me... I would find romantic if you came in on Monday and just were a honest and upstanding about it.
Somthing like so:

"I'm sorry, I was trying to play it cool cause I kinda like you and I kinda made an ass of myself instead. Can I take you out for a drink after work?"

Wala, she knows the interest is mutual, she knows you can say "hey I made a mistake" and you get another chance to get to know her.

you can definitely salvage the situation. like lunacy said you probably just confused her. looking at it optimistically you got her thinking about you :) i would say just ask her for a drink after work. you can always talk about the office function later when you're more comfortable with each other.

it doesn't have to be make like you don't give a shit or be pathetic. there are a lot of other things you can be ;) how about subtley apologetic and confidently enthusiastic about moving beyond the uncomfortableness.

Thank you for your thoughts, but I cannot report a successful outcome. I messed up my lines and ended up looking pathetic. 'Off form' was probably salvagable. 'Pathetic' is defintiely not usable material. Don't ask me what I said; I got to preserve some dignity somewhere. We are still on fine talking terms but, if there was a chance of date or even just 'two people who happen to get on, going to the same place together by prior appointment' (I think there is a difference), then there isn't now. I wouldn't even want to go now. I'd be like charity on her part.I give to charity; I don't collect from its pot.

But I'm sober now! Honestly, I don't believe I couldn't have helped you, but it wasn't going to stop me from trying.
But would you give pot to charity?

It's OK, Z, just swear off women and masturbate. It's less complicated. Pathetic, huh? Ouch, that doesn't sound good at all..what'd you say, huh? huh? tell us!

Oh, well, I told you I couldn't help; or that's the best advice you ever got -- you'll have to get back to me on that one.

Only just got round to reading this thread. I think you actually made a right fuck-up of the whole night. Why were you so stand-offish? Why did you refuse her offer of a drink? Why did you refuse her again 5 minutes later?

To be fair mate, if you were struggling to loosen up around her and get chatting on an alcohol fuelled night out the chance that you'd turn it round at work was always going to be small.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a pop at you, I just think the whole 'cool indifference' thing is a total cop out. It is one of those things that might work for some, for whom it comes naturally, but I think you'd have been far better off getting a few pints under your belt (for courage) and then telling her what a great girl she was!

Mind, I've no room to talk. I'm great at talking, after a few drinks if you don't interrupt me I'll just talk at you till the place closes (a friend once remarked a night out with me was a bit like staying in and watching the tv, all you have to do is just sit there); put me in front of a lady I'm *ahem* interested in though and I'm shite. Friends wives, girlfriends, female friends etc and I'm great, life and soul of the fucking party, but ask me to chat a girl up and I just don't know what to say. Whatever cringemaking line you came out with at work I'm with you on this one brother, many times I've wanted the ground to just open up .

That all said though, and whilst I respect your right to keep the personal personal, you can't tantalise us with tails of your workplace chat-up gaff and then just leave us hanging: go on spill the beans - we won't tell anyone, what did you say???? You know you want to tell us really, and I promise not to laugh(*).

I was going to promise not to laugh, too, but I didn't think of having a nifty disclaimer! See how much better two (or more) heads are than one? Singly, we may be hopeless, but together we make one hell of a standup human being!

Consider us the "reaction time"-challenged voices in your head, only we argue more (unless you have MPD) and chastise you less. Your mates will rarely be as cruel and hard on you as you're probably being to yourself. It's OK, Z, live and learn.

Besides, dignity is overrated. Brutal honesty, now that's refreshing! Peer pressure!
