I cannot play dvd's on Windows Media player,it comes up unknown dvd when i open up Windows Media player,i have tried to download K Lite Codec pack but still nothing,even installing new Windows Media player has not solved the problem.Any help would be great,i was going to do a review and prefer using Windows Media player when im doing them.Thanks

It's worked before?
Trying installing VLC Media Player from videolan.org and see if that will play it. If that won't play the DVD, the drive might be crapping out.

^Thanks Harry,it works fine with VLC Media Player,the problems with Windows Media player started after i got my computer fixed.I was having computer problems i thought my hard drive had crashed,took it out and tried another hard drive in it..the eventual problem was a power issue so put my old hard drive back in and went to use it to start a review and it was not playing.So far i have tried changing screen resolution and downloading another version of Windows Media player.From a google search i have tried all the other causes for it not playing without any luck.

Best guess is the problem is with Windows Registry, so I suggest you try a registry cleaner/fixer.

I managed to get it working,although i had downloaded the VLC Media Player and was using that then tried GOM Player but my audio was not working,not sure why as i had downloaded the Codec pack.Maybe it was the wrong Codec but now my Windows Media player is working again.Now i can start my review,thanks Harri and Hardware.

Hmmm, if you already had the WMP codecs installed then maybe a corrupt DLL was to blame. At any rate, I'm glad you're back in business.

Windows Media Player is still working...But
When i take a screen capture and open in Paint and then copy and send to My Computer the photo is "black" i have tried following this info regarding Windows Media Player
4. Don't use Overlay
1. Open your Window Media Player and click Options on the Tools menu.
2. On the Performance tab, click on the Advanced... button.
3. Uncheck Use overlays from DVD video, click OK and restart the player.
But it is still "black" i also have Picasa 3 installed on my computer and Paint.net,could they be affecting it...any help would be great thanks.

The black screen is indicative of the fact that video data is going directly to memory on your video card/controller, as opposed to general memory that is accessible via the clipboard.

^ Ahhhh. I was playing around with the Splash video player from mirillis.com (which works really well, for a work-in-progress), and I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get a screen-grab. Even when I paused the video, hit print-screen on the keyboard, and pasted the screen-grab into Paint, the part of the screen which was occupied by the video image was black. It must be because I had enabled the option in Splash to use the video card's hardware acceleration capability.

As Harri suggested, see if the WMP has an option to disable hardware acceleration. If it doesn't then see if the software that came with the video card does.
