Well, that's fine and dandy, but I don't have DVD-Rom software no more, damn.

&

I want to get a new computer, but it'll be a while, so...

as much as I'd love to help to test out new stuff, it just ain't gonna happen. But it sounds very interesting and I can't wait to see some comments on this new technology.

I saw an demonstration of an early prototype proof-of-concept voice controlled DVD at VCA's booth during CES this past January. It was the first thing in a very long time to make me think "wow, that's impressive". I think this technology has the capability to completely redefine the interactive DVD genre.

I'd just like to say I have received my version of The Sleaze Show along with a headset type microphone thingy-ma-bopper. Thanks VCA!

I'd also like to point out that the voice recognition actually worked fairly well. There are about 20 or so different phrases that it recognizes, "Play DVD", "Main Menu", "Full Screen", etc. and the software recognized my speech pretty regularly and the response was quick. For instance, say "Full Screen" and it's in full screen in less than a second - not bad.

Unfortunetly though, the player didn't work ;( The video would just freeze after a second or two. My other software players worked just fine (windows media, powerdvd...haven't tried my standalone dvd player yet...I anticipate no problems) It was a beta test, so I can accept defects...besides, media players are a dime a dozen, its the voice recognition that they're advertising and that worked pretty well.

Note to VCA - Thanks for the dvd. I appreciate it. Since this is a beta test, it would be helpful on the questionaire on your website to include space for general comments or a place for defects or something, as I did find a few. I was able to squeeze them into some answers to questions tho...

Note to others - Hand's free porno dvd control is pretty damn cool -- let's face it, your hands are for something else when watching these things! Now if they get this voice-recognition into this Fantasex thing, maybe you can be watchin, gettin all hot and bothered and whatnot, and all you gotta groan is "Cumshot" and BLAM-O you got yourself the money shot just before you release your own money shot.

I got my copy last week, but I'm only a few hours away from VCA. It worked very well for me, except that I had to do a lot of speech training to get the player to recognize my voice. But after about an hour or so of reading lines into the computer, I was getting > 90% recognition.

I think VCA's got something good going with this technology once it's applied to their FantaSex series...

I had no problem at all with the recognition, it knew what I was saying from the first time I tried. So did you have any problems with the player, or did that work fine?

I'm not too far from VCA, so I guess the UPS guy didn't have to go very far. In fact, I'm not that far from any of the porn companies and distributors....works quite well for me actually.

I was able to get the voice recognition to work out of the box, but the success rate was probably 50%. Not a problem except when "pause the DVD" is is interpreted as "stop the DVD."

As far as the player, I had no problem with it. However, I'm running a fairly new Pentium 4 with lots of memory and WinXP. I did encounter a non-fatal program error with the settings app, but not with the player itself.

I don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but why do you need or want voice recognition on any dvd let alone an adult dvd? From my experience, I'm just happy to have a dvd play as it should and have all the buttons take me where they're supposed to. Why do you need to complicate matters by adding yet another feature that, more often than not, will detract from the overall dvd experience because of technical difficulties?

I suppose if you need to have one hand on your cock and the other in your ass, it would be nice to just be able to bark out your request, but are there any other real advantages to this technology that I'm missing?

Just got mine today - The movie was ok and the mic was pretty cool. Had no problems, but wouldn't buy anything like this. As the previous poster said I just like to sit back & relax and let the dvd play.

Keep in mind that this technology is slated for use with VCA's virtual sex line ("FantaSex"). The whole premise behind VS titles is that you are interacting with the star in question.

The technology isn't nearly mature enough to do anything for me -- I find VR sex titles to be awkward, generally boring, and very repetitive. But I welcome steps toward making the experience more personalized. For example, voice recognition software is one piece, while voice synthesis is another (see AT&T Natural Voices for the latest advances --and shortcomings-- of computerized voices).

Personally, I wouldn't pay for a voice recognized DVD player, but then again, I think that I won't be a fan of the genre until those headsets from "Strange Days" come into being.

Got mine on Monday. Would have had it Friday but UPS still refuses to leave things with the apartment manager so I had to come home early from work to wait for it.

I still haven't gone through the DVD fully but the voice interface worked fine for me right off the bat. I didn't like the headset much but you could always go get your own.

I don't really see how much of a market this is going to have though since it limits you to watching a DVD on your computer and I don't know about any of you but I don't usually kick back and relax in front of my computer.

Yes and no. One of the dvd's I tried had the same problem, except worse. I could never even get to the main menu, or passed the warning screens. However, I tried a third DVD and that appeared to work just fine.

As for my system specs, that shouldn't be an issue. I'm running Win XP on an Athlon XP 2100+ with 1 gig of ram.

One thing that I did just notice and may be useful (it's a bug regardless) -- When I press the eject button on the player, it opens up my CD-RW drive instead of the dvd player. Interesting....maybe it's because I am running both drives off of the same IDE controller. My DVD player is the master drive and my CD-RW is the slave.

Got mine today. Good ole UPS delayed it a little.

The software was easy to load and installed flawlessly and as VCA advertised it has not caused any conflicts yet.

I liked the ladies voice that greets you when you first load up the player. Kinda sensual and with a touch of humor.

Because of problems and glitches that existed several years back with voice recognition, I opted to go straight to a training session. That took roughly ten to fifteen minutes, and then I fired up the DVD.

There is a somewhat limited set of commands that will need to be expanded once the VOICEDVD is attached to a Fantasex title, but I was getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 90-95% recognition. Even the few times it didn’t respond, I think it was partly my fault and when I slowed down my rate of speech it picked it up. The only problem I had in going through the DVD came with the “Pause DVD” command. Once it locked up everything and I had to reboot to reset things. The second time I had trouble with that command, it paused everything and then started up everything but I had lost the sound. I could jump around, go back to the menu and do everything else, but the sound was gone. It even recognized and accepted the Quit command. When I fired up the software again, the sound was back.

To notesleb (Stephen, VCADVD) I did load up a couple of other DVD’s and played them and it seemed to go flawlessly through the menus, chapter skips, and wherever I wanted it to go. (P.S. I have posted the proper response at the VCA Website.)

Overall, a pretty impressive piece of software and could certainly make a series like the Fantasex more fun to just sit back and speak commands, because a lot of the Fantasex genre tends to require a lot of clicking. They are not just “hit the play button and then sit back and watch” type shows.

Same as Saki, I’m running a newer Pentium 4 with oodles of memory and the machine popped everything onto the screen in an acceptable fashion.

Chillin, I didn’t run into the severe problems that you seemed to have.

I didn’t like the headset, but it did work. I also never liked the cheesy little desktop microphones that came with new computers either.

It was fun, gives another option, and pushes the envelope a little further.

That is interesting and helpful...thanks for the info, may even explain the troubles you had playing the disc. We'll check it out.

Everyone who has responded so far has been very helpful, all of the first round participants have been shipped, those of you who are waiting should have a package in the mail any day now. We will be shipping the latecomers (second round) on Monday.

Stephan,

I hadn't noticed Chillin comment about the eject button on the panel display. That was about the only thing I didn't try, so I threw a disc in and tried it. I have both CD-RW, and a DVD player, and the eject button didn't open either drawer.

I got my package from VCA yesterday and set up the voice stuff last night. I had no problems loading the software. I also experienced very mimimal problems when using the voice commands. It recognized most of the commands, but at 1 point i had the DVD paused and my phone rang, and it for some reason started playing again. I also noticed if I didn't speak directly into the mic it didn't work. It recognized all the commands easily, I didn't have to do any voice training at all. I can't wait to see the full version of this software being used with Fantasex!

Thanks VCA, you guys did a great job with this software.

Tried my version finally and ended up giving up and using my microsoft media player. The program kept locking up either at the FBI warning or the main menu. Every time it locked up it required a full power down of the computer to get it going again.

Tried the eject button as well and it activated my CD RW not my DVD drive.

The disc worked fine in my other players and the times I did get the VCA player to run I had absolutely no problems with the voice recognition soft ware.

On Thursday as I got home from work I noticed UPS had been there to try and deliver it. Unfortunately, I was on my way out of town on vacation till Labor Day. I had it delivered to a friend but it will be another work before I get home and and am able to try it out. I'll give my report soon afterwards.

Reading this thread after I sent my report, I didn't think to check the eject button, which didn't work on my machine either and I just have one drive a DVD/CD-RW drive. Awesome program though I can't wait to see what this leads to.

Although not for me it was cool. If they can indeed translate this technology over too some real interactive applications like in a Fantasex line I'd be intersted and I think it would be a big hit.I have the Windows xp with the Pentium 4 and everything went extremely smooth. Loading the software, the voice recognition and the video quality. However, I got the same glitch as the others. The eject button had my CD RW open instead of my dvd rom. Anxious to see where this can lead.
