OK, this has nothing to do with porn or Holly Morgan.

I'm writing an article for an online knitting magazine, and I'm going to submit some scans of some yarn. I've got a Canon Scanner that goes up to 1200 dpi, and I use Adobe Photoshop Elements to do the resizing. The magazine says that jpg's must be at least 300 pixels wide, and no more than 1 MB in size.

When I scan a 3 inch by 3 inch wide portion of some knitting at 1200 dpi, I get a jpg that's 3600 pixels wide, and the file size is around 50 MB. When I resize it to 350 pixels wide, the file size goes down to around 20 KB, which seems way too small.

When I scan the same 3 in X 3 in piece of knitting at 300 dpi, I get a jpg that's 900 pixels wide, and the file is about 2 MB. When I resize to 350 pixels wide, the file size drops down to 60 KB.

What should I do to scan to and resize so that I have good resolution, around 300 pixels wide, but with the final file size around 1 MB?

When I do the resizing now, I tell it to resize the image, and to do the bicubic interpolation. Is this the way to do it?

When you create a jpg image, it is possible to select the amount of compression that is done. Setting the image quality to 100% will use (I think) lossless compression, and produce very large files. Setting the quality to 90% will introduce a few small artifacts, but make a huge reduction in the file size. The image quality remains fairly good. My guess is that your scanner is creating images with quality set to 100%.

I don't know where this setting is in Photoshop Elements. I use ArcSoft PhotoStudio to resize jpg images. In that software, the image quality setting is in the "save as" dialog when you save the new image after resizing.

I'd suggest you look for a "compression level" or "image quality" setting in the resize, save or options/preferences dialogs.

Play around with the setting a little to see what you think, but I'd say you should be able to get a good quality image, 1600 pixels wide in less than a Megabyte using the 90% quality setting.

This page has some info on the JPEG quality setting in Photoshop Elements.

As licker said, even large images should compress to under 1 MB with good quality. 200 hex 1500 should be quite possible.

I know this is a fairly old thread and you might have solved your scanning dilemma by now, but the first thing you should do is scan close to the size your going to use. In other words, if you scan the yarn at it's real size and give it a resolution of 72ppi(that's the screen resolution), there'll be less resizing to do and better quality when you're finished. If your scan bed is letter sized and you scan at that resolution you'll have a file about 1.4MB. You'll probably be using a section of that, which brings your file size down. When you resave in jpg, the compression will bring the file down more. All jpgs are compressed. There will be a great discrepancy between the closed file size and how big it is when opened, especially if Elements has a Save for Web feature like it's big brother Photoshop. My screencaps are usually about 10-15K, but opened in Photoshop they're more than 100K. My guess is that your 20K file was pretty much what you needed. How did it look on screen? That's what counts in online content. Remember to always scan for output. 1200 ppi is overkill for anything that isn't going to be printed and just takes you longer to scan.
