Anybody out there into '70s classic porn?
Recently met the man who called himself Henry Paris for a fascinating private Q&A with a small collection of NYC fans, and it rekindled my interest in the Golden Age.

Do ADT'ers feel these films still hold their merit?

Fuck, man ... but Annette Haven HAS to be the greatest porn actress of ALL time.

I certainly have my personal favorites from the 70's and 80's. Oh hell yes, I still think they hold their merits. :)

Cool dude!
I think those films are the shit!
And those soundtracks ... who has soundtracks anymore?
(Leslie and that's it).
Fucking Jamie Gillis and Serena and Annette Haven and Silvera and Leslie and Seka and so on ... That was real porn.
It seems so vintage and tame now, don;t it? But so fucking cool.

Actually, I gotta backtrack.
Rocco and Stagliano have soundtracks for both their recent EA biggies.
But those (mostly appropriated I'd argue) soundtracks for the great 70s flix have a distinctive funk that's so dated, so part of a cheesy era, that you can't help but love them now.

From what I've seen I love golden age porn - first porn I saw that actually turned me on. I don't think it seems tame at all. This is an excerpt from my review of Easy

You know that when you have a classic on your hands you’re going to see things you don’t see in today’s porn. Easy is all about what you won’t see in the modern age of porn: a student who grabs his teacher after class and makes her lick his cum covered dick; a 17 yr old boy who breaks into teacher’s house and turns her on at knifepoint; a woman tongue fucking a guy’s ass; a catfight which results in one woman raping/seducing the other; full-body camera shots, kissing, foreplay, lots of bush, and tube socks. Exited yet? Well, you should be ‘cause Easy is one of the most arousing flicks on DVD.

Granted I hadn't seen that many porn movies when writing that (and still haven't seen enough to make any grand generalizations.)

Wow, Steph, now there's yet ANOTHER movie that I must add to my wish list!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE those classic porn movies from the 1970's! Those are the movies that were the rage when I was a young man in my early twenties. It's so great that you created this thread, skronker!

Here's the thrust (pun intended) of the Golden Age of Porn: the best of the best of movies from that era were like mainstream Hollywood movies that happened to feature hardcore sex.

I would say that the absolute best porn movie that I have ever seen, pound for pound, was the original The Devil in Miss Jones. Miss Jones (played by Georgina Spelvin) is a spinster leading a pure, but lonely, unfulfilled life who decides to commit suicide. Once dead, she encounters a figure named Mr. Abaca (played by John Clemens in a non-sex role), who informs Miss Jones to her shock that she is not good enough to gain entrance into Heaven because she committed suicide. Yet, because Miss Jones led such a pure life, it seems unfair to have to send her to Hell. Miss Jones strikes a bargain with Mr. Abaca that will allow her to return to earth for a brief time and live a life completely consumed by lust (reason being, she died a frustrated virgin). Then, when she finally has to go to Hell, it will be for a real reason. Harry Reems played the teacher assigned to instruct Miss Jones in all of the sexual arts.

The Devil in Miss Jones is a very serious and dark character study that is riveting from start to finish (I think that Flash did a review of it--it's available on DVD). The acting is so real, that you feel like you're watching something that's actually happening in real life. The sex was incredibly hot and risque for that time period. And the soundtrack is the greatest that I've ever heard (both mainstream and porn). It has kind of like a VERY accessible and beautiful classical sound, and was a complete departure from that cheesy, 1970s disco sound (which, as you've pointed out, skronker, does have its charm). In fact the DIMJ soundtrack is so great, that it has been available on CD for years now, and I listen to it all of the time.

Another movie from that time period that is an absolute classic and personal favorite is The Opening of Misty Beethoven. There are many people even today who consider this the single all-time greatest porn movie ever made. The Opening of Misty Beethoven, also currently available on DVD, is actually an erotic version of the classic mainstream film, My Fair Lady. A rich writer (played by Jamie Gillis in a career-best performance) takes a Paris street hooker (Constance Money) and turns her into an internationally known jet-setter and the new Golden Rod Girl. But because he had been so focused on transforming her, he didn't realize until it was almost too late that he had fallen in love with her. The movie was lavishly produced, wonderfully scored, superbly edited, and the acting was top-of-the-line by porn standards. The sex throughout was hot for the time, but rather tame by today's standards. The script was also very funny and witty. What a delightful movie!

There are many, many other adult films that I've thoroughly enjoyed from the 1970's, but won't go into here. The two above are the best, IMO.

The below films from the 1970's, in random order, must at least be mentioned:

Deep Throat (probably seen by more people, including non-porn fans, than any other adult film in history)
Behind the Green Door (classic Marilyn Chambers debut film with a heavy interracial theme)
Marriage and Other Four Letter Words (amazingly well-acted and realistic movie of a married couple who decide to spice up their marriage by engaging in swinging)
Baby Face (one of the late, great Alex deRenzy's most popular films ever)
Pretty Peaches (another deRenzy classic, starring the delightful and sexy Desiree Cousteau)
Hot and Saucy Pizza Girls (featuring a torrid sex scene with John C. Holmes and Desiree Cousteau--what a match-up!)
Debbie Does Dallas (the quintessential football jock/cheerleader fantasy film)

There were many, many excellent films produced in porn's Golden Age.

Gee Steph:

You're totally right. There was all sorts of crazy stuff going on in those flicks (and, really, I haven't seen enough of them, either). Maybe what I meant by "tame" was really "artful" or (if you get the way I mean it) "innocent," ... Porn wasn't the same industry it is now, so there was a freshness to these flicks. Unjaded?

Loved your review of "Easy."

Gotta check that one out.

There's a funky low-budget fun about movies like Garage Girls, Aunt Peg, and Desires Within Young Girls. The Magnum PI era is evident, and the girls are just enjoying themselves, hopping onto whoever's available. You're going to see some pimples on some butts, but that seems endearing to me.

It doesn't look like today's magazine-spread come to life. Georgina Spelvin is not a raving beauty; it is like watching the lady next door getting some. There'a a more realistic, gritty voyeur feel, especially in some of the darker movies like 3am, Amanda By Night, and Vista Valley PTA (which has father-daughter incest).

Okay, now I have to pull out my copy of Easy and watch it tonight.

Lindi -- But I love pimples on butts! Realism. I think that was another '70s hallmark, and why those films are so darn sexy (as opposed to being displays of sex, which is often the situation today, even though I enjoy that, too). Also, the actors were adults! Maybe young, in their early or mid-20s, but you weren't watching "barely legals" fresh off the bus from Muncie! Also, in many cases (Mitchell Bros. excepted) it was still an "East Coast" thing ... Lots of great NYC urban scenery. And bush! Lots of bush. Soft bodies. And so on ...

I'd be more into the classic stuff if it wasn't edited all to hell. Taxi Girls is a perfect example. I also would have enjoyed "Easy" a lot more if there was more penetration shown, and that's the problem I have with some (not all) classic porn. You will sometimes find a flick that could have been great but there is hardly any penetration shown which bothers me.
I really liked the Marilyn Chambers movies: Up & Coming, Insatiable #1, #2, Marilyn Chambers Private Fantasies #2-#6 ( I didn't like #1 becasue it had 3 scenes that Marilyn didn't appear in and they were lifted from a different movie alltogether).
The Johnny Wadd stuff is great too but I heard that Arrow was going to release them all on dvd and that worries me. They were the ones that butchered the Taxi Girls dvd weren't they? but on the othder hand they slipped the fisting into the Candy Stripes dvd as an easter egg, so I really don't know what to expect when John Holmes starts slapping a girl around in those flicks, will Arrow edit that stuff out or leave it in? I'm hoping they leave it in, but you never know.

I'm very much into the Golden Age adult films. Some have lost their eroticism over time, but many have not. And there are definitely things that went on in those films that studios today don't even come close to. And, generally speaking, the plots are more well developed and production values are much higher quality.

Pontius is correct, I have done a review of The Devil in Miss Jones, which happens to be one of the best VCX discs yet produced, along with many others from the golden age.

Other reviews of films mentioned in this thread that I have done are Debbie Does Dallas (my first review here actually), Behind the Green Door, Desires Within Young Girls and Candy Stripers.

In the future I also have reviews of the classics, The Senator's Daughter, Vista Valley P.T.A., Resurrection of Eve, Hot Rackets and Loose Times at Ridley High coming. Along with what ever other discs I pick up.

perfect word choice :)
thanks, but please take any of my reviews with a grain of salt. i had hardly watched any porn when i wrote most of them - and a lot of the porn i had seen was terrible, so my expectations were low. it would shock me to be turned on by a porn movie. that's why i love insatiable so much - my first real shock.
MB - funny, that's exactly what I like about classics. Plenty of lead in to the sex, looks across a table, a hand on a knee, clothes peeled off. The straight to the dick-in-hole closeup shot does nothing for me. Repetitive dick-in-hole thrusting just makes me hit fast forward.

Okay, Pontus and Skronker, run out and get Easy. I did watch it last night, and you would get a kick out of it! It will put a smile on your face, and send the temperature in your knickers up a few degrees.

Jessie St. James (pretty buff, with a Faye Dunaway look to her face), natural tits throughout, unzipping soft dicks and making them hard (never see that now!), and one really fun cumshot.

Mostly it's the realism that gets you - the people aren't sanitized of all personality, they have actual motivations for what they are doing (many of them dark and low), the people deal with ambivalence and unpredictability. Today's features (the last two that I watched were Search for the Snow Leopard and Dinner Party) have utterly interchangeable characters - any of the women could be played by any of the other women. In the oldies, they let the giggly actresses giggle, and the reserved ones be reserved, etc. We can hardly watch the new ones, and find them unmemorable.

My other tip is - watch it after Vista Valley PTA; see poor Jessie St. James running from town to town trying to keep a teaching job while the men come out of the woodwork for her at school and in sleazy bars. It will tickle you! (Oh, I forgot, nobody around here likes to be tickled!)

Thanks for the recommendations, Lindi. I'll be sure to pick up both Vista Valley PTA and Easy and watch them in that order. As it turns out, Jessie St. James was a big favorite of mine back in the 1970's.

Lindi, funny that you should also happen to mention Faye Dunaway. She's my all-time favorite Hollywood actress.

Yes ... I'll find "Easy" asap.
Another facet I loved about the period is that every flick came with endless "cumming attracttions." This was when you actual went to an adult movie house (in a skeezy part of town) and risked what terrors you could not begin to imagine (and only vaguely perceived in the gloomy, dank confines of the falling-apart old moviehouse) and saw a movie! Of course, this was already the '80s for me, but stuff seemed to float in repertoire, and when videos were available, they still had previews packed on ... Brilliant, hilarious trailers: with humor and drama and weird dada elements. I think you can get whole compilations from somewhere --- Caballero, etc. Anyway ... cool, fun stuff.

The biggest problem many fans have with the classics is this idea of less sex, less hardcore, shorter scenes, fewer tight shots, fewer spurting cocks, etc. But it's worth remembering that most younger fans have never seen a hardcore film in a public theater. The idea of a 30 foot tall wet pussy in close-up was cool for the novelty of it--and it was a new thing to see then--but long, exhausting, endless sex scenes with constant monster shots, and gaping asses with lube and bits of brown matter oozing out of them . . . well, under the magnifying glass of the big screen, less was probably more. At least more erotic and less clinical.

Just a thought.

Watch a Henry Paris movie and you will see he has a fixation on fellatio. It helps if you share the obsession. I don't.

Nonetheless, Radley Metzger (aka. Henry Paris) was a great filmmaker, and that is all that matters to me.

I saw him at the wedding of some mutual friends recently and said pretty much the same thing to him, He was like, "Yes, people often say that ..." He said that CJ Laing was his idea of a hot woman, but that he never fucked the talent. Quite a dapper gent. He's got quite a following of cine-hipsters here.

I would agree with that. And it once again proves that there is little correlation between "beauty" and "sexy." "Sexy" is an attitude. C.J. was "sexy." Annette Haven was "beautiful."

A modern day example is Belladonna. I don't think they can make someone else as hot as her. But beautiful, she is not.

I think "beauty" transcends sheer facial perfection (symmetry). Belladonna strikes me as someone who is truly charismatic, and I find in the presence of such people, esp. if you are involved with them, that your concept of what is strictly "beautiful" and what is not can quickly be reorganized. I often find, when I am falling in love with someone, that their so-called "flaws" become the most attractive thing about them (looks-wise), and if I am hanging out with someone I am growing to dislike or am disinterested in, even the tiniest flaw becomes excuse enough to walk away -- even if they are technically breathtaking. I mean, it's all the difference in the world between a Vivid Girl (retro-fitted by science for your viewing pleasure) and someone like Belladonna.

Annette Haven may be the most beautiful and desirable woman to ever grace a porn set. But she always projects a cool sensibility, CJ Laing is just freakin' hot (and together: damn!).

Got to agree with most everyone about Radley Metzger/Henry Paris being about the best of the "pantheon" directors of the classic age. He got more eroticism into his _softcare_ stuff than many did in their hardcore attempts. Just check out stuff like "Camille 2000" and "The Lickerish Quartet" (among a number of others) -- class, all the way!

I agree that he had something of a fondness for fellatio (I think, though, that Gerard Damiano was even more hung-up on it, not just because of "Deep Throat" -- way more blowjob screen time in his stuff than in Metzger's!), but it may very well be that it was because the camera could dwell in closeup on those beautiful women's faces while they were doing it!

Since this is a Paris/Metzger thread, I figured that I'd call attention to a number of contributions I've made to ADT over the years about the DVDs that have been produced of his hardcore material. These aren't reviews, per se, but are more examinations of how the DVDs compare with earlier VHS and/or original theatrical versions of the films. There have been a number of cuts and deletions made about which the newer viewer should be made aware. The posts are longish, but the level of detail is significant. Here they are:

The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann

The Opening of Misty Beethoven

Naked Came the Stranger

Barbara Broadcast

Thanks for bumping those old threads, Greybeard. Very informative stuff, to which I would add this: VCA obtained the rights to all the Metzger hardcore classics--except Maraschino Cherry --during the early 1980's (Quality released them first). NONE of the VCA editions had any cuts in them at this point, except the very brief segment edited from the CJ Laing urination scene in Barbara Broadcast . VCA may or may not have an original uncut master of this scene; But they can hardly claim in any other instance that they lack unedited source material for duplication onto DVD. Evidence to the contrary exists in both my own and many other private collectors' collections.

VCA has also, I might add, buried in their vaults many of the best adult features ever made, classics by DeRenzy, Ziehm, Dancer, etc. As long as they hold the rights to these films, it is unlikely any of them will see the light of day, given their current policy of self-censorship. A very sad situation.

Excellent stuff, Greybeard. I hadn't seen those posts before today and appreciate you drawing attention to them. Perhaps you could upload them as reviews? I understand that they weren't intended as film reviews but it would increase the visibility of this important information.

The current DVD releases of Metzger's movies, both hard and soft, really do leave a lot to be desired. It's a terrible shame that, despite all his major works being available now, only The Image (The Punishment of Anne) is available in a pristine edition. I actually have pretty high hopes that, given the increasing recognition afforded his work, we will see more respectful presentations in the future. Aside from the regrettable practice of 'self censorship', it's very important to see Metzger's films in their original aspect ratios.

Finally, and I appreciate that this may not be the place, I would recommend that everyone seeks out Metzger's most important softcore movies, Camille 2000 and The Lickerish Quartet . Camille is a sumptuous erotic melodrama with an outstanding score and The Lickerish Quartet is, in my opinion, his greatest achievement.

It's not up to the moderators whether they should be included as Reviews, but up to the writer. I think they would go quite well, but the writer has to submit them in the review section.

It took awhile, but your requests have been answered. Substantially the same posts I bumped earlier in this thread are now also listed as Reviews in the Review Section. I also included another, similar, earlier post about the original Candy Stripers DVD, which at least had what otherwise would have been censored/unavailable stuff as Easter Eggs on the disc!

Nice work, Greybeard. I'd like to think that publicizing the frequently loathsome presentation of classic adult movies will shame the culprits into treating their consumers with more respect . . . but I'm not holding my breath. The reviews of Naked Came The Stranger and The Private Afternoons Of Pamela Mann depress me more each time I read them. Anyway, I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates you providing such detailed commentaries.
