ok, i've downloaded an mpeg of my favorite starlett. i'm not burning to vcd or dvd i want to playback on my pc at the highest quality. what does everybody recommend?

Windows Media Player is the most choice. There are other alternatives but WMP is the logical choice. To have the highest picture quality then you'd have to have a hardcore video card and a fast processor as well but if your mpeg's frame is low then you're stuck because if the source is bad then there isn't a lot you can do about it.

BSplayer - freeware version

It has better performance than M$ Media Player along with not ratting one out to the corporate office

thanks, I use mplayer classic with the plugins and the new divx isn't bad either. my drives are 7200rpm with 16mb cache and I download the highest quality available. tho I have a p4 i've wondered what benefit a hyperthread cpu would be. anyone see a big performance with an ht? dual channel ram? i see ambik makes a player too for *.hdv, hi def?, formats. let me know, thanks.

ahh...thanks for the info. for all of the mpeg-4 variants, you want to look for the ffdshow build that supports sse2 instructions, since a p4 does too. basically, it'll decode faster using less cpu overhead. you can add xvid on top of that and use the xvid.dll to decode movies encoded in xvid through ffdshow instead of libavcodec.dll. there are almost too many filters and ways of cleaning up picture quality(still limited, of course by the quality of the original)-if you want more info, doom9's got more than you'll probably ever want.

after trying all just went back to media player classic with the mega codec package, seems to be best overall for every file type.

What mega codec package are we talking about here?

I use the Storm Codec 5. It is basically a tweaked windows media classic 6.4 with basically all kinds of codecs. It even plays quicktime .mov files :) so no need for quicktime player or real player in your computer anymore :)
