Edited: Oh, you mean on tape. Hot Video claims that VMD shot the first porn flick on tape in France. Jolies petites garces was shot in 1980 and starred Stanislas Piotr and Marilyn Jess. Maybe in the USA, this was done earier, but I doubt it.
On second thought, I might be that Jolies petites garces was the first film released on video in France, instead of shot on tape. The article I read wasn't specific about that, but I suspect it was shot on film and released on video.

Did you read it? I bought it about 15 years ago, and I read it every once in a while when can't remember the title of a stag but can't remember it making mention of videos, if not, maybe, in a general way. I'll check it again tomorrow, anyway.

Your answer seems to imply that you believe the first the first professional videos were probably shot in the early 80's, like 1982-3. In facts, that was what I thought myself, as the earliest videos I have were some shot by Benazeraf in '82 (the ones with Pontello, Olinka... lasting about 60 min.). That was until this morning, though, as I have received from France a Brigitte Lahaie video made in 1979 (Trois petits cochons). Wonder how many people were supposed to watch it, knowing what the prices of VCR's were then.

Edited: About the question when shooting on tape versus shooting on film avtually began, maybe this is question that Henri Pachard can answer much better than either of us. I seem to remember that actually shooting on video didn't break through until around 1983-1984.

Was released in 1979. As far as I know it could have been shot in 1978. Lahaie's last porn was released (not counting edited movies or compilations) in 1980.

What format was it? If the tape is really that old, I wonder if you can still play it.

What I have is a copy from a regular vhs released, I presume, in the late '80's.

Mark, I know some people from the bgafd who are working on a database for European porn before 1990, a daunting task at best. A couple of months ago, they sent me their lists of titles and performers they had collected thus far. I looked at the titles they had for Brigitte Lahaie and Trois petits garces is not among them. I think they would be very interested in your information.

But the information you give about the db done by our english friends (with whom I am in touch, thanks to you) brings us to a question I have tried to discuss with a countryman of mine about the opportunity of discussing porn, expecially the one made before video era, without the movies or videos or pictures at hand. The risk is to add confusion and misinformation to a field that is already cluttered with lies and (false) legends.
Moreover, expecially about french porn (but I could add also the german) there is not a systematic work to relate to, like Rimmer and Riley's for the american.
The first or second topic I opened on this forum was about the apparent absence of classic french and german porn cultist in the forums. It is absurd that no french source (as far as my knowledge goes) gives any information about that very early Lahaie's video. (And I'm talking about a performer which easily goes beyond the limit of pure porn cult). So I ask again: where are the French and Germans?

I agree with you on the lack information on classic European porn and what's worse, the many instances of misinformation. I also have to admit that pre 1990 Euro porn is not my specialty at all. I am familiar with many well known names, like Kikoine or Tranbaree, but I have hardly seen their films. To add to the confusion, most of the Brigitte Lahaie films I have seen, were edited German copies. So I don't even know which French titles I have seen.
Maybe this situation will change thanks to DVD re-releases. Not only will they bring back the films themselves, but maybe they will also bring some more attention to the films themselves.
