The porn industry had actually been free of HIV during most of the 90's. Porn stars who were reported as having HIV during the 1998 mini epidemic are:

Marc Wallice
John Stagliano contracted HIV in 1997, but apparently did so outside the industry, in an episode in Brazil. He then or previously stopped performing (other than in Toy Stories with a condom with his HIV positive wife Tricia) and does not seem to have infected anyone else.
All three women appear to have gotten it from Marc Wallice. That's certainly what they have said they think. All had unprotected anal scenes with him in late 1997 and/or early 1998. (Many other women did as well, but transmission of HIV is a very uncertain thing, and others have continued to test negative on the PCR DNA HIV tests.
When Tricia tested positive, she immediately held a large industry meeting to say so, and to initiate steps to find the source, and take steps to protect the industry. (In SHARP contrast to Wallice's behavior.)
Marc Wallice's viral load, when he FINALLY did submit to DNA HIV tests in May of 1998 indicated that he had almost certainly been infected for around a year or a bit longer. However, HIV is not very transmissible when first contracted. It becomes much more so as viral loads build up, especially if one is not under effective "cocktail" drug therapy to keep the viral loads down.
Wallice falsified an HIV test two years previously, and was caught doing it. He was only put on "probation" by the industry, since at that time he tested negative. He customarily used an HIV lab that wasn't one of the industry standard ones He rarely or never turned in DNA HIV tests, which are much more sensitive, and turn up positive results much more quickly after first infection than run of the mill HIV tests do. DNA tests are now always or nearly always demanded.
Brooke Ashley has brought a lawsuit against Wallice and the (marginal) studio which hired both of them to do the gang bang scene in late 1997 which she feels sure is when she was infected.
