I see a lot of porn today that I think isn't very good.
I know I could do better, but how do I go about becoming a porn movie director?
I live in the UK, so that would be a nice place to start.
Thanks.

1. Buy camera(s)
2. Hire girls, boys, whatever.
3. Film them
4. Get editing software.
5. Edit the sex into a scene
6. sell scene to interested production companies, or even better,
7. Distribute it yourself, via other's or your own website.
Profit.

Thanks for your reply.
I thought that might be the way ahead. I was thinking of shooting a scene, and putting it on one of those tube sites.
Then if producers thought it was good enough, I might get paid to do more. Or maybe keep doing them myself and make money off a website.
What's the going rate to pay a girl per shoot?
Thanks.

you forgot lose a shit load of money in the process. artistic talent is worthless in the porn industry. you are not going to shift any more porn than the next hack with a camera, so the idea that a producer will be PAYING you is very naive. unless you have a lot og money you want to waste abandon this idea of being a porn director and actually making money.

The answers given are over simplified here. Here is a list of just a few of the things you have to worry about.
1. Fornication/Pandering/Prostitution laws. In 48 of the 50 US States porn is considered pandering for the director and prostitution for the participants (California and New Hampshire being the exceptions). In Michigan fornication is also a concern and with all three convictions being a real possibility and the penalty being triple life in prison without parole you really could ruin your life. Utah also has strict fornication laws.
2. Money. A high quality video camera is about $5K. A high quality computer for editing said videos with editing suite is another $1500 plus. No name girls make about $600 a scene, guys about $500. House or studio rental for the day can be up to $5K.
3. Film permits. In LA County you have to obtain a permit from Film LA and use condoms for any sexual contact including oral sex. You can film in San Francisco or Marin and not have those concerns (in most of Marin you don't even need a film permit unless you are filming in a public park/street). Permits can be up to $5K per movie depending on the scene in LA, SF and Marin are cheaper.
4. Insurance. In California you are required to have workman's comp insurance through State Fund for all participants. That is based on how many movies will be produced in a year and the acts contained within them, a one off could cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. A yearly policy would probably be $10K plus.
5. VD testing. Any porn producer worth working for requires a VD test (HIV, Syphilis, etc.) dated within 14 days of the scene. Established talent would likely already have the test, likely you would have to pay for the testing at $200 per person through Talent Testing Service or CET for new talent.
6. The Mann Act. It is federally illegal to transport talent across state lines to produce porn. The penalty could be up to 20 years of getting fucked up the ass by five bubbas nightly, otherwise called prison.
7. Section 2257. This is a federal law that requires you to make copies of all participants state ID or passport proving that they were over age 18 on the day of production. It must be formatted into a certain mandated format and kept for all eternity. After you die, your kids have to keep the info until they die, then the grandkids have to keep it, etc. down the line for all eternity.
8. Distributors. If you don't get a decent distributor you could never see the proceeds of the sales of your hard work. The chances of getting a mainline distributor like Evil Angel to distribute and sell your movies being an unknown are zero. Even well-known producer Brandon Iron got screwed out of everything he should have earned from five movies which he produced at $15K cost each using Rob Black to distribute his movies. If you plan on just making this a hobby Clips For Sale is an option but they take 40 per cent of everything you earn from the movies they distribute.
These are just a few of the problems you face producing porn on your own. Please discuss this with a known adult industry attorney such as Paul Sirkin before even thinking seriously about producing porn on your own.

I would say take one of those courses in how to set up your own small business company, because that is what's gonna make you lose hair... the stuff regarding the filming is most likely the easy fun part. I would probably try to find someone good at the boring stuff so I could focus on the girls (my sister is a laywer so maybe I'll phone her).

I love how everybody posts all the negatives. Nice to see such a supportive forum. Here's a few ways to save money on cameras:
First off, the tech has seriously advanced in the last 5 years so you don't need a $5k camera to shoot good looking footage. A use hacked Panasonic GH2 costs around $500 and it's footage can intercut with RED footage so that the average viewer won't know the diffeence. It doesn't have the dynamic range of a RED, but for the money, it's the best there is.
A slightly higher cost option is the new Panasonic G6 or GH3. G6 costs around $6-700 new and can do 60fps at full 1080p, something no low cost Canon can do. GH3 can also do full HD 60fps with a higher bitrate codec(50mbs vs the G6's 28mbs) but costs $1k. None of these 3 cams do 4.2.2 color for grading, but for an amatuer you need to learn how to shoot first then grade.
A new cam that can do 4.2.2 color cheap, is the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. It records ProRes 200mb in cam in 4.2.2 color and will soon shoot compressed Cinema DNG. Costs $1k and you can't get a better cam for less or even the same money.
These cams aren't really designed to be easily hand held for shooting so you'll need a rig and some other odds and ends for sound capture, but even then all those extra parts can be had for around another $1k.
So for $2k you can have a real nice camera setup. You can build your own decent editing computer for as little as $1000 and for basic editing you can buy Sony Vegas Studio or Adobe Elements for under $100. Then you need some lights, and a few other things.
All in all to start up your own video productions from scratch you need around $3-3500, but you can buy piece meal as you go along. Start with a camera and tripod...then some rigs and sound equipment...then lights, etc...

I must have read his post too fast. Apologies although the post is still warranted as this thread will come up from time to time as others have the same question, especially with the policy of a couple of mods here of shutting down duplicate threads and referring to the first thread available regarding a subject.
I am not very familiar with the UK other than I have read that hardcore porn is illegal to even possess there -- certainly making it would be verboten as well. Some soft core was legal in the UK as of a couple of years ago. Talk to a competent entertainment attorney before even thinking seriously about starting a porn operation there. In fact the only UK based porn company that I know of is Killergram (they produce softer porn IIRC) so there may be a legal reason for that of which I am unfamiliar. Good luck in your endeavors and hope you find a way to make some porn somewhere even if it isn't in the UK (The Netherlands has a porn industry and some very extreme stuff is made there -- if you are a UK citizen or national my understanding you can live almost anywhere in the EU including The Netherlands without an immigration application).

Shooting, selling and possessing hardcore porn is legal in the UK. And there are quite a few more producers than Killergram.

I didn't mean to be negative. If anything I was being very protective of the OP making sure he knew the problems that could come up and how to stay out of prison. I tend to be a realist and state my opinion blunt and to the point. Sometimes because of that I come across as pessimistic at the least. Unfortunately in the States porn production is a felony in 48 of the 50 United States. In Michigan you can get a mandatory life without parole plus 25 years without batting an eye for porn production because our rape one statute encompasses fornication and pandering. Polk County, Florida's Sheriff and DA are also known to prosecute all porn producers making porn in that county, the law there isn't life in prison but I know of one woman that got a year getting ass fucked by five guards nightly in the Polk County lock-up plus probation once released for producing what was very soft core porn for her website. Miami (where there is one agent named Brian Berke from AMA and several soft core porn companies based) and Tampa (don't know of any agents or companies there but Luc Wylder filmed a movie there in the early 2000's and the authorities there didn't even bat an eye) are more lenient but the same laws apply there so caveat emptor. CRFlixx, I hope you now understand why I posted the way I did.

That is why I made sure to say that was what I had read (and it was a while back at that). Since you are saying the opposite (and you live in the EU whereas I live in the US) the information was probably a few years old. I know way more about US law than UK. I still suggest he speak to a competent entertainment attorney so he doesn't unknowingly produce himself into a prison sentence.

^ Fair enough, the only thing I can't and won't argue is the legal aspects, that sucks and is sadly real.
Everything else you can get around cheap or cheaper than most people think. The hardest part for an amateur is finding people to film. If you can do that, everything else can be overcome with time.

^^Since I sell porn to the UK for a living I can assure you I keep up with UK laws. I actually get paid to do that.
