I own a Panasonic A120, which is a "just okay" midline player.

For multi-region DVD players I would recommend this company:

Although U.K. based, they offer modifications for most makes and model numbers including many American players. You have three options, the easiest of which is to buy your next DVD player off them pre-modified. If you intend to keep your current machine you can either buy a DIY mod kit (not available for all models) or send the player to them. International shipping is available but I'm not sure how much it will cost.

If your machine isn't listed on their site it's always worthwhile asking because they can usually produce a mod. on request. I'm fairly sure that Panasonic machines can't be hacked via the remote, so it will be necessary to add or replace components in the machine itself.

For computer DVD drives the following website tells you everything you need to Know:

First of all you need to establish whether or not the drive itself is region-locked. If it isn't you can easily overcome software regional coding using a nifty little program called DVD Genie. The website also provides flash-ROM upgrades for those region locked drives.

Buying a multi-region player is absolutely essential for those of us living in the UK who won't tolerate censorship. I would never even contemplate getting a region 2 only machine and fortunately we're spoilt for choice here with dozens of dealers providing multi-region players. If you don't have any joy with Techtronics I should be able to suggest some more places to try.

I´ve never heard of skinflicks which have region-code enabled. Care to mention what companies have done such an unnesessary move? One might suspect that you are watching those regular titles.

Oh yes. Your A-120 requires an upgrade to hardware.

Techtronics has good reputation also in Finnish groups of usenet. Techtronics.com lists modifications for Panny A-1xx´s as "Not available". Contacting them or perhaps dvdcity.com in the U.S hopefully leads results. Dvdcity doesn´t list chips/boards at all but they sell modificated players, and also have a reputation of customer-friendly service.

An exellent link was already given. But I´ll just add that current generation of stand-alone players doesn´t output progressive PAL (except w/Cinematrix) and PAL compatible linedoublers come with horrid price-tags. Home cinema pc´s are the very choise if you use a funky projector(-TV).

P.S PAL-NTSC conversions wasn´t the topic but few things:
-converting colours isn´t usually a problem, most players have circuits to perform the trick.
-making a 50/60 Hz conversion is technically quite difficult and when done properly also very expensive. Some standalone players support all sorts of conversions, but a penalty is then paid with pictures quality.
-U.S TV´s that accept only NTSC colour may or may not sync to both frequencies.

To absinthe --- the titles my friend got me are absolutely Region 2 encoded, although I know most porn discs are not.

Once I get to play these damn things, I will post reviews and how to purchase these titles from Europe (according to my friend).

Insults one gets from a non-modificated player when insereting wrong discs are kinda hard to ignore. And no I don´t think there´s anything wrong if you had, in the first place, consultated this forum for titles like "Matrix" or "Scream 12".

I´m still curious to know which pornmakers/distributors are putting region-codes on their discs.
