Its not like you can place TV ads or anything. Its always intrigued me as to how companies (Big and small) gain exposure and get people to subscribe, etc. Anyone have any inside knowledge?
OK, now I hope none of the mods gets mad at me or anything, but adult films share a similarity with drugs, liquor, prostitution, and gambling, i.e., these are things that don't really NEED advertising, do they? As Chris Rock famously said about crack, " 'You don't really need to SELL crack, people come looking for you. It's not encyclopedias! There are no crack dealers with tons of unused inventory. No crack dealer is sitting around his apartment asking himself 'How the hell am I going to get rid of all this crack!?!?'" They've all been around forever, they're all illegal in a majority of places and yet they survive throughout the centuries. Why, because people seek them out. Now as far as specific companies, that's another story. Many do NOT make it because they don't assemble all the needed elements needed to survive for long. This is one reason why box covers are such a big deal in the industry. In cases where a film does not have a "bankable" star on the cover (Eva, Jenna, Gianna, et al) I would gather that the box cover has GOT to sell the product in 50% of purchases. Of course I could be wrong. Of course porn does make some inroads to advertising in several different ways; there's AEE, there's radio shows, there's the sports pages of many newspapers, (showcasing dancers at strip clubs), so it does get done, but basically I can't see a day coming when people are not actively seeking sexual stimulation.
I have to say I agree that the box cover needs to sell the video. I know when I'm randomly buying porn I look for a star, then title, a movie titled Cumshitters or Suck my Ass from his Cock, is a lot more likely to get my attention than say Hillary for President. Two sound like the kind of nasty gonzo action I crave, the last sounds like a plot driven couples flick. I might still pick that up since it has Hillary Scott and she can't fail but still. Finally I look for the cover. Here is where I'm not sure the best strategy. I already know what Hillary Scott looks like so really a good selling point for me is know that there is ANOTHER really hot girl in the video, so having a lesser (or the least) known woman with the best looks is a good way to get my atention.
They actually have places they can advertise but those places just aren't as highly visable as tv. Many of the movies I've ended up buying or renting or at least checking into have come from me seeing ads or reviews fron AVN magazine. Like some here have already mentioned in cases like that it's extremely important to have a great looking box cover. It's the thing that gets me to notice a movie in magazines or when it's on the shelf. Often times I'm interested in seeing certain girls. When I look through AVN or some other mag if I see certain girls mentioned I'm instantly interested in that movie. One of my biggest criticisms about some of the bigger companies whose stuff I usually like is they do great boxcovers/ads for their movies but don't list the girls on the box/ads who star in the movie. They'd don't have a pic of all the girls on the cover/ad so I usually have no idea one of my fav girls may be in the movie. I think it's a big mistake to not clearly name the girls in the movie on the box cover. The movies you rent or buy can be a great advertisment for other movies from that company and it blows me away that there are some companies that don't include trailers/previews from their company. The trailers/previews are usually the first thing I watch and I've bought, rented, or have been introduced to many girls who've ended up being favs of mine by watching them. Some companies need to put more effort into changingupdating them also. It's a bummer to see a new disc with the same trailers from last year. I don't think some companies realize how powerful trailers of other movies from their company can be. The Howard Stern show can be a great place to plug a movie. The Stern show has made me aware of certain girls I wasn't aware of or I never paid attetion to. I'm sure I'd seen Courtney Cummz plenty of times before but her apearance on Stern was so sexy I became a huge fan. I was aware of and a fan of Bree olsen and Kissy Kapri but their appearences on Stern made me like them even more and I stared buying more of their stuff. The same thing has happened with other pornstars too. Those all preview DVDs that some companies put out and give away at the AVN/AEE shows are great!!! I've checked stuff out based on those lots of times. If the companies out there were smart they'd put out a 1 or 2 hour preview disc of their stuff once a year or so and send a bunch of them out to all their retail outlets for customers to pick up for a buck or two or for free. There's no better advertisment for your product than showing them a sample of what you've got.

Unless they're going for major branding (like paying for your logo on a nascar car) it makes most sense to advertise at the point of purchase - eg store or ADT :) Studios can pay for homepage placement at online stores. The beauty of web advertising is that it's very cheap compared to other media options and it's directly linked to a means to buy the product. When I bought advertising (for an online store) I didn't have a huge budget so I spent it all on websites. Though I did flirt with the idea of sponsoring an ultimate frisbee team. Buying keywords on Google, Yahoo, etc is cheap, but they constantly deactivate adult ads so it becomes a pain to manage. The ROI is there, but it takes regular maintenance. Companies also spend money on search engine optimization.
This sonunds like a great idea. I'm probably one of the few people who, when renting on VHS, would play the trailers rather than fast forward through them. Heck I even played through the 900-number ads. (The one for anal sex talk with a blonde Jeanna Fine was really hot. [:P)]) Nowadays, with DVD, the trailers are on a seperate track, so it's easier to just click the "Play Movie" icon on the main menu screen. As mentioned elsewhere, radio shows like Howard Stern sre snother advertising venue--but not just Stern and his imitators. I remember a radio sex advice show out of Chicago back in the Eighties--Sex Talk With Phyllis Levy--and she would do porn video reviews. That was how I found out about a video called Hypnotic Sensations, and while she didn't review if favorably, since it featured my favorite fantasy--women being seduced under hypnosis--I made a point to look for it, and found it. That was the first time ever I saw Christy Canyon. Enough said. _____________________________________________________________

I agree. When I want porn, I'll go looking for it. As a younger guy, I knew to go the back of the video store and check out the section behind the curtain. When internet websites started offering good quality video downloads, I started using Google searches. I hate those spam emails I receive because they'll advertise EVERYTHING! "Teens doing it with donkeys" or "DD grannies taking it up the ass", etc. Please, I don't rent EVERYTHING. For me, I use Google or Yahoo to search for it.
Not long after I first subscribed to Playboy I started getting mail from adult merchants, from the "Adam & Eve" catalog (isn't that owned by Penthouse?) to subscription offers from more hardcore magazines. About the only time I didn't mind being put on a mailing list.
Personally, I hate that stuff. It probably wouldn't be so bad if the envelope was discreet but many of the companies that send that stuff out (or at least used to) with big bold letters on the envelope say "Sexually explicit material" or pics of women of the envelope. I don't see the need or understand the point. I don't want the mailman or whoever's looking thinking I want want that stuff. 99% of the time I didn't want it or requested it.

This pisses me off to no end especially since there's no easy way to unsubscribe. Even if I return the mailings to sender (that means you, Hustler and GayVN) I still get their mailings.
Well, I figure the mailman knows I get dirty magazines anyway (they all know why the mags come in those black wrappers) so it didn't bother me. I'm sure they all know too that you can get on mailing lists for that stuff even if you don't request it or want it. I'm sure the postal service would just as soon not send that stuff, since most of the time they're the ones who get bitched at if a person doesn't like getting those in the mail.
I don't receive porn advertisements in the mail. But I do receive porn spam email and I hate that stuff. The reason, is because I'd rather receive advertisements for stuff that I'm interested in. For example, I'm into Milfs, big natural boobs, reality porn, freckled women and "plot driven" porn. So, I'd rather receive specific advertisements that I like. No, I'm not interested in transsexuals or anal or bestiality or S&M so don't try me. I like the way Amazon will track my orders, then suggest specific items for me. For example, if you buy Anne Rice novels, Amazon will suggest her next book. Or if you like reading Russian spy novels, Amazon may suggest similar books. I wish porn was the same way.
Another poster mentioned this, porn sells itself. Big studios like Vivid and Wicked become big due to more to the premotion of specific stars than due to any general advirtising. Porn users get into porn by experimenting with various products, or by word of mouth from others, and they find certain studios and or stars they like and come back to them. The veteran porn watcher is probably going to ignore most if not all porn advirtising all together because they know what they like and know how to find it. And the industry's ability to advirtise is so limited anyway it could at best make little difference in what sells and what doesn't.

I can only speak for myself, but I think the girls sell the film. When I purchase a porn film, I check to if see if it has a girl I like and she is doing the type of sex I like to watch. Then I check to see who is directing and what company it is for. I do like to hit he website and watch the trailer. A good trailier always helps sell a film for me.
I'm pretty much the same way in that I buy/rent based on the women in the movie. That's why I think some companies are doing themselves a disservice by not making it easy and clear which girls are in their movies. If they choose to only put one or two girls on the cover they should make it very easy to see who's in the movie by looking on the back cover. Some companies have a montage of pics thrown together and it's hard to figure out who's in the scenes and what they're doing. Some of those boxes I look at I'm trying to figure out who the girl is, is it the same girl in the close up anal shot, if the penis she's with is a black guy or a dark skinned white guy, who's the other girl in the scene, etc., etc... The same is true for trailers. I think they've stopped it now but there was a company who's stuff I usually liked that had trailers filled with annoying graphics and FX that it was hard to see who was in the scenes and what was happening. Weird colors, super fast cuts and flames would take up most of the screen. They'd never put up the girls names and all they showed was quick flashes of scenes. They've pretty much stopped that these days but boy was it annoying while they did it. If it were a music video that stuff would be great but as an promo to get me to try something else from them it sucked big time. The back box covers that work best for me are the ones that have a nice head shot of all the women at the top or going down the side and in columns underneath or besides the head shot they have pics of that girl in her scene. All nice and easy to figure out.
The product doesnt but the dealer/pimp/liquor store/casino's do I know affiliate's and TGP are a good way to go, I wasnt really talking about DVD release I just meant web based content. Like the smaller sites out there. Manojob.com for instance. A great site but if Id not been linked i'd never have seen it.
