I have talked previously about the instability we face as performers, and the relatively short shelf life of many female performers. Here is the two biggest mistakes that porn performers make financially. First, performers always ASSUME that they will be booked in the future, when nothing is set in stone. Second, performers love to spend money that they earned already, but haven't got paid for yet (the earlier payroll examples). Just because I work for Naughty America on Tuesday, doesn't mean I can spend the money I made that day until I actually PICK UP the check and deposit it into my bank. It sounds like common sense, but you would be so surprised at the number of performers who live hand to mouth. Poor budgeting, poor planning, and rampant spending on luxury goods and services, ruins many performers. There is HUGE pressure to keep up with the Jones's in our business, and many new girls end up spending most of their earnings on jewelry, clothes, purses (I know a girl who bought a 2,500 dollar purse), or buying ridiculously expensive cars (that they will never pay off). They spend money capriciously because in their mind, there will ALWAYS be money in the future, because they ASSUME that they will continue to be booked. So they burn through all their earnings, and have very little, if anything in savings. Then when something unforeseen happens to them, they are left struggling to pay their bills at the end of the month. There is nothing more eye-opening than to see the desperation that some performers face at the end of the month. Begging for work, doing anything to make some money, its depressing sometimes. I sometimes wish that agents would take the new girls (and guys) aside and explain to them the advantages of having a checking and savings account. I know many of the performers aren't exactly MENSA material, but still......having a bank account shouldn't be that hard. I believe some of these porn producer are dealing drugs as well. I bet more than one girl was paid for her scene in drugs. If you have to "rat" them out to the cops "rat" them out. AIM should be set for drug testing and counsellings as well. Don't you think it would benefit the other performers to know the extent of their co worker drug use. AIM already has counselors at the clinic. It could and should easily be expanded to include Drug testing and counseling. Get to know those names and reputations so you can figure who you want to work with and stay away from. Once you're in good physical shape, try dancing at a local club to see if actually like sex work. If you can handle the customers, competitiveness with other girls, and club politics, then very likely you can handle working in LA's Porn Valley. You should also set yourself up One Model Place and do some trade for print shoots for your own portfolio so you can mail photos to magazines or email pictures to websites looking for models. If you have a screen name in mind, register the url an d all variations and copyright that name too (costs about $400). Do as much solo magazine and website work as you can in order to get your name out there about build up a following, so that people are anticipating your next move. You will have people urging you to do a variety of things like anal, etc, but do not do anything you are uncomfortable with, because you will have to live with it the rest of your life because it will be captured on film. Like others have said, start slow, do solo, then solo with toys, then girl /girl, and so forth. Have a real job with flexible hours (like dancing at a club), so that you are not solely dependent on performing on camera for your living. That will keep from being shot out (do not shoot 50 movies in one year, aim for 10, leave them wanting more, get a website, where you shoot your own scenes where you push the envelope a bit more, do live cam shows etc, Vicky Vette is a good example of this, she has 25,000 members). And, like Eli and Mike have said, find out which directors are legit, will pay you, and most of all treat you with respect on set. Find out which ones who will try to get you to do and extra scene without paying you the additional fees (never get loud and angry when this occurs, just ask politely, 'What extra will I be paid for this extra scene, my understanding is that I was here to do this one particular scene for XXX amount.' Be professional about it and also get your agent on the phone if you have one to assist you with the issue -- this is something your agency should definitely know about the moment it happens, because trying to collect after the fact is a nightmare for them). Always try and be on time or early for your shoot. Print out the directions using Mapquest. If you will be late, call and let someone know. Try and find out what the director or photographer wants you to wear at the shoot and bring enough clothes for him to pick one that is suitable (basically, you will tote around a suitcase from shoot to shoot -- don't bring valuables like Ipods to the set, because they can disappear -- your suitcase should have a good lock). You'll want to have your own equipment, i.e. lube, dildos, vibrators, lotion, anti bacterial wash, eye wash, essentially whatever you need, because maybe you're allergic to what they already have on set and with sex toys that have been laying around on set you don't know where they have been and it is not worth the risk. Pack some nutritious snacks like dried fruits, luna bars, and water, because usually the food on set is junk and you don't want to eat that. Eli and Mike are dead on about boyfriends. You do not need one. They will suck you dry. That is why plenty of female performers have relationships with each other. There are only a handful of female performers in relationships with males that are worthwhile (Eli and Kylie- Eli already had a career in porn prior to meeting Kylie that made him $$$, Jessica Drake and Brad - he was already well established in the industry, Ashley Blue and Dave Naz - already a successful photographer making $$ ). If a guy that owns a big company like Wicked takes a shine to you, that might be worth pursuing (it didn't hurt Jenna Jameson's career). Keep your hands and feet nicely manicured. Maintain your hairstyle. If you decide to color your hair, keep it up properly. Same thing with adding extensions. Keep them looking nice. Promote yourself, try and get on Playboy TV, channels like that to get your name out there. One thing that no one has addressed is that porn is like the Mafia, once you are in, there is no 'leaving'. Look up the Tericka Dye story. She was out six years, had gone on to a college degree and a teaching career until one of her old scenes was spotted on a compilation tape by a group of students hanging out watching porn.
