When you're doing whatever it is you do when watching a porn scene, how important is the setup, or theme to you? By setup or theme, I mean scenarios like Bang Bus's pick-her-up-fuck-her-and-dump-her; the various Naughty Office themes, such as teacher-student, office workers, etc.; the gloryhole; the "I'm here for the fiesta" routine; and so forth.
For me, it's important only to a limited extent. The office scenarios usually give me a good chance at seeing women in office attire and hose; and the themes involving "daddies" raise a red flag, as I'm not much into pigtails, chewing gum, and the teen stuff that feeds the fantasy that the girls might be younger than they are.
I find myself FFing through most of the setups to such scenes, and I also find myself paying more attention to interviews of girls I haven't seen a lot of. While good interviewers are hard to come by, I still can find myself looking at a girl, listening to her talk a little about herself or her porn persona, and really anticipating the thought of seeing her with a dick in her mouth in a few minutes.
But the "reality"-based setups? Not much there for me. Anyone else?

A theme matters to me to the extent that it influences the choice of wardrobe for the scene. I definitely agree about office scenarios and office attire and hose. If there is a power dynamic in the theme that will be referred to during the sex scene, that can be cool, depending on a lot of other factors.
A dialogue setup for the scene really hinges on the execution. A well executed setup will improve the sex scene coming afterward, whether the setup's tone is serious or tongue-in-cheek. But a poorly done dialogue scene will likely elicit eye rolls and be fast-forwarded through. Even if a setup is meant to be humorous, it can still be corny.
But a scene with the girl inexplicably dressed in stripper clothes in the middle of the day at a porno house rented location can be antiseptic to the imagination compared to a scene that had a theme. On the other hand, if I think the male or males are coming across as complete cads as a result of the theme or setup, I'm not likely to be all that enthused with the scene.

Well, I guess it's not actually going to improve the sex, but it will entertain me, and possibly will make me more horny by the time the sex starts than if I just watch the scene beginning with the sex.

A setup is very important just as long as the pornmakers follow through.
One of my favorite setups that is usually not followed through is the "Trading Sex For Something" scene. It can be a student fucking her teacher for a better grade, someone fucking a boss to get hired or to keep their job, someone being blackmailed, or the old standard of the casting couch. Where this scene usually fails is that girl who at first is opposed to such a deal ends up getting into it within five minutes. I would rather she begrudgingly fuck the guy and feel put off throughout the scene. This way it feels more realistic.
There is a great Big Tits at Work scene featuring Cody Lane where she is coerced into fucking a guy for a part in a film. I love the fact that from beginning to end she maintains the premise that trading sex for a film role is wrong. But she does it anyway because she wants to be in the movie.

The setup/theme is very important to me and that's why most gonzo scenes that usually have a girl that is naked or winds up naked real fast, and then a guy appears already rock hard, gets a BJ, then it's sex in various positions for 20 minutes which ends with a facial does almost nothing to get me aroused.
Give me a simple setup, the clothes that go with it, some dialogue, actual foreplay and I'll be super happy.

It's important to me. I don't rent/buy DVD's which go zero to sex in 60 seconds, if I can help it. I avoid all the big wet/oiled asses videos precisely because they start out naked and barefoot from the very start. Rodney Moore is pretty reliable in having some minutes of setup before the clothes come off. About interviews: most of them, besides being boring questions, waste the opportunity to show the girls. Typically it's just the girl sitting on the couch, camera locked in position, showing only her upper body. No legs, no feet, no asking her to stand to show off her booty, none of that. That's why I buy fetish videos such as JBvideo.
Some setups seem OK enough on the surface but fail in the execution. For example Evasive Angles likes to do the "Thick girl is out doing her thing, guy discovers girl, guy approaches girl, scene develops from there." But this type of setup requires a lot of focus on the guy(s) and there's too much interruption and flipping back and forth between the guy and the girl, in the beginning parts.

Agreed. This is the key to me and also what makes shopping for themed porn really difficult.
I love well done theme movies. The secretary/boss thing is great for me since I've always had a thing for the professional type. Students/professors is fun as well. I don't even mind the bored housewife/pool boy/plumber/whatever you can think of think of scenario.
But as Johnothan said, please, for fuck's sake, follow through and use performers who can pull it off.

It's important but not the main thing,,,the sex has to be enthusiastic with the impression that the actors are not acting but really want to do each other senseless,,,thats the key for me.

Most of porn is made with all the brio of grinding sausage, which is to say that a setup or theme is no guarantee of a good scene. However, I do believe that either can greatly enhance a scene when done well.

I like a setup if it includes some nice tease from the girl ("accidentily" pressing her boobs in a guys face, bending over in a skirt etc) but not when it runs too long.
Brazzers usually does a good job with the setup and the tease but lately they've been going on and on and on with the setup.

Well put. I don't get that-they create a theme, and then ruin it the second the clothes come off... at least usually. Some of the early brazzers scenes keep it going through at least 1/2 the scene... after a while, they get lazy too and screw it up... pretty soon they don't really have even much of a reality theme to begin with even though I think it's in their mission statement somewhere... Good start, but they quickly drove off the road.
I love the themes... everything is TOO gonzo now.... give me some fantasy. Give me something new. That's what these scenes can do. And frankly, this is how it used to be done and the reason they were called "Adult Actors/Actresses"... because they still tried to act. They should just be called "professional fuckers" now lol. They don't act 99% of the time. I bet in the old days, in some movies, Ron Jeremy would have about 40-50 lines.... pretty amazing compared to today. And frankly, Seka WAS a good actress! The ones we have today are not actors and actresses in most cases. Hopefully we'll see more of this.

Co-sign!! I completely agree that sexual scenarios are very, very entertaining when properly prepared and executed. Case in point, I just recieved Hustler's "Phat Tuesday" which was shot during Mardi Gras 2004. It stars a young Jenna Haze, a teenage Amber Peach fresh out of Mobile, Alabama among others like Lacey Duvalle and Ice La Fox. Now during Mard Gras there will of course be countless casual hook-ups among the college crowd and that was how the movie was carried out; flash for beads and maybe have sex for even better beads if she's feelin' the random guy. One of the best scenes feature the girls trying to get back stage passes for a Lil John concert with Ice La Fox agreeing to take one for the team and suck the dick of the road manager; I loved this dynamic and the scene was extremly enjoyable.
Enjoyable scenarios are the primary reason I enjoy Black Ice's "Juicy White Booty" series so much because they have a great track record of providing such scenes like where a college girl has to get her truck fixed but her credit cards are nearly maxed out so she decides to do what she's gotta do get it out of the garage ~ Sophia Castello and L.T. or L.T the Landlord is about to evict a deadbeat tenant, Tricia Oaks who is months behind on her rent; she's finally out of excuses and options, L.T. just wants her to finally get the hell out so Tricia Oaks has to think fast or move into a shelter. . .
The basic necessities of transportation and shelter provide a plausible backdrop for the ensuing sexcapades and I love them. Like the one about the starving, homeless girl (Kelly Divine) searching for food and digging through Nat Turnher's garbage. He comes upon Kelly Divine and threatens to call the police so she begs him to reconsider because she is just so desperate for food that she will do whatever just to survive another day :-)

Good setup or theme improves a scene, for sure. Bad setup doesn't wreck it, but distracts from it a bit.
I like good chat before before a gonzo scene, but I don't see it often. I don't want to see the director, his hands, or the lights etc, and I don't want a bio, but a minute of "What's on the menu today?" "I'm gonna fuck three guys senseless!" with a big smile is appealing. Lighthearted, wanton, fun - that works for me.
I mainly separate porn into two categories: gonzo and plot. For gonzo I expect to see, as an earlier poster had it, 'professional fucking'. I like to see women taking their clothes off so I prefer to see some strip, or the guy/s removing her clothes (especially with favourite stars) but I don't care whether the guy/s start nude or not. But overall, if it's gonzo I know they're there to fuck and I don't really mind if we go straight into the scene with everyone naked and the lady has a mouth full of cock.
If there's supposed to be a theme, I count it as 'plot'. If it's actually a story-style plot then I really appreciate genuine acting skill. Yes, Seka could act. So could many of the porn stars from the 'Golden Age'. I still have movies like The Opening of Misty Beethoven and Insatiable because the sex is good but there is acting, dialogue and storyline which compares favourably with 50% of Hollywood movies of the time. A lot of porn acting, dialogue and plot goes far beyond cheesy into excruciatingly embarrassing to watch, but some is okay. When it's done well enough that I can suspend my disbelief, actually see these people on the screen as if they were really who they purport to be in the way all good movies achieve that end, then I really appreciate the setup.
When it's 'plot' in the way that bangbus or other similar semi-gonzo series do it, I generally wish they wouldn't bother. The exception is Seymour Butts at his peak. That style of setup, with Shane and then Alicia, really worked. Yes, you knew he wasn't really surprised to discover Alexandra Nice in his back yard giving Lex Steele and Valentino blowjobs, but he had the relevant charm and brought out the fun in his performers.
Most of us know the feeling of finding an excuse for doing what we really want to do and joking that the excuse is genuine. That's how Seymour's performers came across: "Oh, what a surprise, we're making a porno, well I guess I'll just have to go ahead and shag this gorgeous brunette as if I really wanted to." It was like Seymour somehow gave his performers an extra excuse to let rip, and that setup couldn't be better.

I completely agree with this. I hate it when the "mindsets" of the characters disappear as soon as the panties come off.
I don't have a problem with intros, if they're kept short enough that they won't just be FF'd -- make your points to establish the theme and move on to the sex. If it's a secretary fucking her boss, show his POV checking out the fact her top is very low-cut and loose, he can see she's wearing a push-up bra. He's checking out the thin fabric of her pant suit and not seeing panty lines, so he finds an excuse to get her to lean over, sees the outline of her pussy lips, and wants to talk to her in his office immediately. That shouldn't take more than 30-60 seconds. The conversation is about rumors she had been improperly promoted for a previous job -- she looks nervous and defensive. He warns her style of dress has raised suspicion she is offering her body to gain favors from male superiors -- she looks guilty. He demands to know if she's been trying to attract his attention -- she has. Well, there's only one way to handle this...
That said, I think there can be perfectly good scenes with "sex professionals" that aren't acting -- instead it's Jenna Haze bragging she's going to ride Lexington Steele until his eyes bulge out. There's a classic scene in Suck It Dry 5 where Roxy Deville is showing off how good she is at sucking dick -- the guy just can't take it, keeps pulling back, she keeps slapping his cock to taunt him. There's no characters there, just Roxy Deville "owning" an unseen male performer -- for real -- no acting involved, just too good of a blowjob for a guy to take.

Very important, it's why parodies can be super hot. A parody forces setups and themes, that's what I want and I do not care whether or not it matches up to some piece of mainstream entertainment.

The set-up, theme, plot--whatever--is not only important to me, but EXTREMELY important, the essence, the everything, for a porn film to not only get my attention, but hold it.
I guess I'm a bit jaded after watching too many adult films over the years, but I MUST have a reason for the old "In and out," and thats where the setup, etc., CUMS into play.
I expect and DEMAND that my porn be somewhat close to "real life," which means a little character identification though role playing and provocative dialogue.
In true life situations, for example, rarely will a woman shake a man's hand and in less than ten seconds, pull out his pecker and start sucking on it--yet, such scenes happen all the time in the fantasy world of porn, and frankly, for me, are rarely erotic.
So, YES!, lets have some buildup/anticipation to the explicit sex action, which only makes why we rented or purchased the product, that more enjoyable.
HERE is where, btw, the adult film director could incorporate (but does only 3% of the time) frequent "tight" camera shots of sexy female "bad girl" character roles lighting up and inhaling deeply on looong all-white cigarettes, so natural in real life, and filmed for decades by main stream Hollywood directors to accentuate any number of "setup" seduction scenarios or various thematic approaches, including developing those so-called "natural" moments, when a true smoker lights up a cigarette for any number of reasons--and ALL, I might add, especially erotic to our huge, and thanks to all the "antis" out there, EVER GROWING smoke fetish community or "smokerhood," as we are collectively often called.

It can make or break a movie for me,i love the set up/theme and if it does not deliver then it's a "fantasy" ruined for me.I like to put myself in the male performers shoes when watching movies and would hope that the Directors take that on board and although we love seeing the girl and the fucking etc,the male talent on screen is really us..does that make sense lol.I want to be the guy on screen getting to bang the teen at the door who has popped around to ask if i can fix her computer lol,or the one fucking the office temp over the desk..i could go on.

In general, not very important. Give me the basic set-up and let the sexual interaction do the talking.
Two Exceptions:
1) When couples viewing and the movie is used as an entertaining arousal tool, the plot and character development is a great mood setter.
2) The actress is highlighted either through a personal glimpse of their feelings and mindset,a dance, or a Playboy Glamour type video shoot. A master at this is Elegant Angel and I love it, whether it's Jynx doing a shake the booty dance, Gracie jazzercising, or Tori doing a sensual bikini walk down the beach.

Very important. There has to be something that titillates the imagination and like someone else said just walking right up and having sex in 6 seconds flat is boring to me. It's like going to watch an action movie and there's nothing but fighting and explosions. I like the sex of the modern era of porn but I like the setup/backdrop scenarios of the old school (late 70's to early 80's) adult features. I'd rather watch a good 75 minute film with great scenarios than a 3 hour gonzo release with nothing but sex after sex after sex. If you're going to shoot nothing but sex at least make it creative like Jay Sins releases.

sometimes i don't care, if i like the girl enough. but sometimes it makes a big difference to me
when i watch the old Anabolic Gangbang Girl series, i realize that part of what makes the scenes hot is the set-up and the settings
even when it is improbable, it still makes it hotter. they did those gangbang scenes everywhere ... supermarket, football field, hockey rink, boxing ring, used car lot, apartment courtyard. it was cool

It's important to me too. I especially like seduction scenes.
I also agree with the commenter that lamented that all too frequently the reluctant girl becomes enthusiastic too fast.
Girl Friends Films uses very long set ups. But sometimes the set up has little or nothing to do with the girls having sex. I sort of remember there was one scene where the girls are discussing English Literature and then the lead in to the sex is like one sentence.

Not theme, but setup is very important. Recently RK shooted a scene with Sarah Vandella & Nicole Aniston, the setup/location was incredibly beautiful which i have never seen in a scene before. But whichever setup producers choose, the shooting should be natural. Sometimes because producers choose interesting setups, they tend to overuse special effects. With lots of effects they add to scene, they don't notice they ruin it. For ex, that ghosting effects and other stuff. Thats why i like Raul Christian's asstitans stuff. His shootings seem natural. Also the editing is important in one second girl is fucked in pussy the other second hoop you seem they switched to ass but you don't notice. How could this be look natural ?

The setup/theme can be very exciting, but many times the scene breaks down into the same basic, overused sex scene format and the sex scene itself has nothing to do with the setup/theme.

It's not very important to me but I like when it's done well. I like the BRAZZERS type set up where it's just enough info/story/setup to set the mood. Sometimes I like seeing the girls in normal or sexy versions of normal clothes. It's also fun/sexy having a reason for the sex happening sometimes. I like when the sex is in character too. A girl having sex because she needs a job shouldn't be the same as a MILF seducing a younger guy and shouldn't be the same as a guy giving it to a girl to teach her a lesson.
I don't like the setups that involve some guy talking to the camera for 5 minutes straight about...whatever. It's much better when the girl is there being part of the setup. The longer the guy is on camera by himself the quicker I becoming disinterested.
I'm not a fan of most features because I hate the long stretches in the movie without a sex scene and making sit through a story I have no interest in. But it's possible to do feature-like movies that don't have me fastforwarding through the plot. DIGITAL PLAYGROUND does "features" that work for me because they do it where they move through the plot/story fast enough without long gaps of non-sex story. They break it down where it's like a bunch of quick setups within the story and get right to the sex. However, most of the stuff VIVID and WICKED do I have no desire to even try and get through.
But I'm still a fan of the Gonzo type tease and the girl just showing up on camera in sexy outfits. I love watching bubble butt girls getting film just walking around. I love watching the camera zoom in on Kelly Divine or Isis taylor's butt in a bikini or thong just walking around. I love watching Sasha Grey's butt be the star or a scene for awhile. I like seeing Kristina Rose move and dance.

On a somewhat related note...I haven't watched that many parodies but the ones I have watched have turned me off because the story had nothing to do with sex and suddenly out of nowhere the characters just start having sex. If that wasn't bad enough the sex isn't in character. It's as though a generic sex scene was just inserted in the movie. I'm fairly sure not every porn parody is done this way judging by a few previews I've seen but it seems that most of them are. I guess I can understand the people who make them trying to be as close to the source material as possible but I personally think it's the wrong way to go with a porn movie that's supposed to be about people having sex.

Setups in straight porn generally fall apart when they do porn sex instead of real sex. Anything with a plot will have uncomfortable positions and guys stroking themselves to finish. I'd rather watch plain blowjobs, with women who get completely naked before they start sucking.

Setups in gonzo are usually such a joke that I wonder why they bother.
Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy tease footage, stripping footage, build-up to the sex
But when they try to do these skits and role-playing, it's always cheap, stupid and unnecessary

I agree, sometimes the setup is of a dominant woman frocing the male into submission, but as soon as the sex starts the actress is the standard submissive porn star. However, I say increase setups and themes, but improve the sex scenes to match the context of the entire scene and the depicted characters.

It means nothing to me. I don't even like the tease. They should be having sex within 10 seconds of the scene starting.

Once I recognize a well known porn star, all the "setup" and elaborate fake pick-up lines are a waste of my time. On the other hand in the case of first time stars, like Kelli McCarty or Amy Fisher, the setup and theme could be somewhat important for me.
