Now, features will be an entirely different matter.
Since most everything in a feature is related in some way, it is in the studio's interest to try to film everything in as few days as possible. You will have sets/locations, issues of continuity, performers interacting with each other in a story-driven plot with dialogue and craft people (make-up, catering, etc.) that you simply can not afford to assemble again and again spread out over time.

Back in the 70's and 80's features could take a week to two to shoot but these day's a director is VERY lucky to get 3 or 4 days in a budget total. Many features are shot in two days and I've been on a number of one-day-er's (agh...long).

The bottom-line is that scheduling is a nightmare in an industry where talent is not assured of showing up. Multiple scenes could mean multiple screw-up's on account of no-shows.

For the last few years on my networking-trips to the AVN show, I've paid homage to one of my favorite directors and implored him to consider returning to making features - John Leslie. But he is not enticed since his experience of having years of scheduling snafu's keeps him making gonzo only.

But, I think I even read once in an old interview with Leslie how he traveled to Europa just to get talent to show up. While certain agencies are getting a lot more pro about making sure their talent shows to your production, it is one of the biggest hassles to making porn.
