Certainly no 'official' statistics exist but there was some estimates in studies and academic sources.

I know I'm being an ass but I have to say it...Who cares? Why does anyone want to know this? In fact it's probably next to impossible to have an accurate number because there are too many possible source to sort through just in North America so imagine how impossible it becomes when you include the entire world.
You would be better off spending your time surfing the various model sites looking for the new models or those you really like and then tracking the websites they appear on to buy a membership.

The OP obviously cares or he wouldn't have asked. But I agree it's impossible to know. First, how do you define "active"? Someone who performed a scene today? Within the last week? Month? Year? Performers come and go so frequently (along with studios and especially websites) that the number probably changes daily or hourly.

Define pornstar.
I'd say 385 females, totally 400. Judging by female people's yes-list over in L.A., I've heard Dani Daniels and Aaliyah Love been talking about it, I'd say about thirteen males. Maybe two operating in Florida. That gives us 15. The rest is not pornstars, they are just hanging by. Every one day some newbie seems to show up on the radar, as some seems to get out. That leaves a constant flow. About 20 stays in year after year. That gives 385 in US.
