i saw a survey a few years ago that said the average american male spends $600 a year on pornography. does anybody know if this is correct or what the ball-park figure is?

If we're just accounting for websites, DVDs, and magazines, I'd say I'm good for about $3k per year. And that's saying nothing about lost productivity, future carpal tunnel treatments, etc. Also, if porn were to be declared illegal tomorrow, I'd definitely dump the high-speed connection and go back to dial-up, thus saving me approx. $480/year.

That's probably not too far off...I'd say I put in an order for at least $100-150 every quarter, not including the occasional issue of Hustler, websites, etc.

Why, dare I ask, is such a survey conducted? You're not one of these gov'tal douches who likes to see how many perverts are in the US, are you? :)

I'd say about half as much as mainstream media reports is spent on porn, and about twice as much as the porn media says is spent.

I would have thought 600.00/yr was high, but from the first few responses I guess it might be a good average.

Depends on my employment situation and income. At the moment, I'm "between situations" so my expenditures have, by necessity, been minimized; however, when gainfully employed, I've spent as much as about $3K per annum.

i know a lot of dickheads work for the government but i am not one of them. just a civilian dickhead. i didn't conduct the survey. i saw it on cnn or some other news source. just wanted to see if anyone heard of this survey.

in dvd's alone i spent at least $600 so if that # is right that makes me an average porno-buying american.

besides eric, if i was doing a survey of perverts i would count you and me and everyone on this site. we are here because we like porn and that makes us all perverts. i think deep down everybody has a little pervert in them. :)>

I don't think there's any even nearly correct statistic figure when it comes to porn... to many shady interests...

I'm no american but 600 sounds reasonable, I spend a lot more on records.

I spend way too much money and time. After all, I am now responding to a question about $ and porn. If not for my porn habits, I will be a lot richer (or I will find other ways to spend money).

Who paid for the successes of VHS, DVD, Internet, Broadband, and so on?

I didn't think anyone tracked the nationalities of porn purchasers. I've never been asked if I was American when buying porn. For what it's worth, I probably purchase 6 - 10 DVD's per year. I'm highly selective and with the research qualities of ADT, make good purchases for my preferences. This allows me to milk each video for all it's worth.
