Per DVD I mean. Like whats the average numbers for a flick? I'm trolling those people who say only old white men purchase pornography and "it's their thing". So I want to know, a couple specifics TOO. The spit and the speculum Black anal beauty's 1 or 2 Asa Akira is Insasionable BootyShop Deep Anal Abyss 3 How much did they sell and if you know the numbers of more then post them. Because I know pornos aren't selling by the Hundreds of Thousands or Millions.
I read somewhere online a while back that a successful premium porno dvd sells roughly 20000-30000 copies. Exceptions are highly publised celebrity sex tapes which can sells 100000-200000 copies. Figures don't include any online digital sales via VOD websites. Can't do any specific dvd sales couldn't find any info apart from dvd charts.

thanks man. i'm just curious from a business point of view and I'm also curious becuz I hear this ''demographic'' thing so I wanna know wassup. I wanna educate myself
Actually I think the numbers are significantly lower. I can't remember in which thread it is but a director said that it's more like 10,000. Of course that's probably because of the current World economy.
If companies were smart they'd be catering much more to fans who download rather than buy DVDs.

The smarter companies are doing that, mainly in New York City. I never brought a lot/subscribed to a rack of sites becuz they don't really cater to me. But then again I think casual porn is strictly for Wifey Time. To me most mainstream black porn is boring as shit. If she ain't getting that asshole cracked open and sucking it in between the cumshot(s) [with NO hands like the song say] then I consider it wack/a tease. I also recognize that everybody isnt in it for the same reasons so I respect that. But mainstream porn (for the most part) could use a little more diversity and black mainstream porn could use a lot more variety. Edited by - hollywoodbilderberggroup on 11/26/2011 1:48:14 PM
Many of them do but the problem with doing that is it makes it that much easier for content thieves to get access to the material. Another problem is. Who's going to pay $10 to get acess to a single dvd? Most people want to pay a monthly fee to get access to all the studios content but that's not a lot of money when you consider that most dvd's usually sell for 20$.
Lot of studio pay websites let you have dvd/films content online except for new releases. I think for the first few months the new release dvd from a major studio does well on vod/fyretv type websites and in shop dvd form. After that sell very few hence end up on the studios website for download to their monthly subscribers. In the UK a new dvd from a major studio costs £25 to £30 ($38 to $43) so online seems a better offer in UK.

If u don't like me fine but don't start actin all ignorant becuz u got on the Internet and got ur feelings hurt by a stranger.
Sales vary obviously. I think a lot of producers are lucky to clear a few thousand bucks after expenses. Unless you're already a millionaire sitting on top of money streams in different formats, your days are numbered or else you're just hired help. Some hired help does pretty well, though -- until the bottom falls out completely.
The average is actually closer to 700-1200 units. Some of the better companies/lines sell 1000-2000... No one I know is selling 20,000-30,000 units anymore.
^^^Pornlaw what is the average % cut a director/producer/owner gets per unit.Is it 20% 10% etc after all deductions are made?

Given those figures I'm not surprised work has slowed considerably in the industry. And some studios I would imagine are barely making enough to cover costs much less make a profit. Edited by - Solar4 on 11/28/2011 12:57:09 PM
^Mot studios are probably just making ends meet and that's why some types of porn don't get shot anymore. The studios know they won't make their money back on some videos. Now I'll play devils advocate and say that it's not a surprise that dvd sales are low. A lot of todays porn is pure crap. Yeah! they are well lighted and the camera angles show you everything your mind once imagined but most studios have managed to reduce porn to little more than a science experiment or a cicus act. About the only thing that can identify who made the movie is usually the male performer or a specific type of fetish that is in the movie. Most videos are now a mixture of male and femalre performers who usually follow a checklist of things that have to be in the video and simply go through the motion with very little passion(not that I blame them). The only movies that seem to do well are usually those that star a specific performer doing something new or a performer that always gives it her most and make the scene rise above where it would have been with anyone else. That depends on the deal. Some directors get a flat directing fee if they are a contract director. Some own their product and get a percentage of the wholesale unit price. DVD distribution deals can range from 50 to 75% of the "collected" sales for the director/producer. Some companies buy scenes and others buy the rights to entire DVDs for a flat price. There are numerous ways to skin this cat. And on the rare occasion a contract director might get backend on each unit sold as well. And as for the deductions... that again depends on the deal. Some distributors front editing, duplication, replication, authoring, advertising and printing while others do not.
Declining sales has very little to do with lighting, boring concepts, the economy, bad camera angles, unimaginative directors or too many parodies (well that last one has a little something to do with it) but declining sales has everything to do with free porn. That is all you need to know and the fat lady has sung. Hell she's already sung a few show tunes and is prepping her encore but before she comes back onstage and sings again she is getting ready to be gangbanged by 10 white guys and 12 black guys in the greenroom. You can watch it for free I am sure somewhere online. BTW: Most directors would blow you if they could still sell 10K units every time out. It still happens once in a while but the odds of it happening are slim and you know where slim is. He's watching free porn and jerking off while his wife sleeps.
I know I'm in the minority when it comes to download vs DVD purchases, but for companies like Elegant Angel I'll bet that DVD sales is where they make their bread and butter. Or maybe not.Just curious to know do these figures include overseas sales? Edited by - cinestage on 11/29/2011 12:44:11 AM

So why do they even bother? Those guys that drive around in pickups rounding up shopping carts for supermarkets have to be making more money than pornographers whose sales are that bad.

I bet u that some of them do it just for sport, that's pretty cool. I wonder which genre/niche sells the most?
^Well if you've been working in porn for 10 years then you were in it when the industry was making shitloads of money so technically you should some money in the bank or if you were smart it would have been invested. The dark times aren't more than a couple of years old so 8 good years should more than make up for 2 bad ones. Of course if you wasted all that money on stupid things instead of investing it then you are an idiot.
I have hired ex porn girls and guys if they have one key item in their references... Reliable... many hard working girls and guys are. Girls with alot of scenes and many partners, as well as men are pretty much over the drama stuff too. Work involved customer service, and some product placement.. not huge but ...
I'm not going to brag but I moved 9,800 pieces of FACES LOADED #2. I moved them from the back of the warehouse to the front. It was easy (and lighter) considering I sold 200.

I would like to see a breakdown of the typical product lifecycle for a scene including all the different ways that a producer can milk revenue out of it. This would include both initial DVD and website distribution and also resale for compilation DVD's and to outfits like Videobox.
Which you will likely never ever see cause then the mainstream and adult studios would have to stop whining like little bitches. The content guys are always crying poor and how bad life is for them..... Some even try to/do buy off our legislators to get the likes of SOPA passed. Piracy has been, and always will exist, even back when printing presses were invented.

Your comments are irrelevant and stupid. You are right that it's unlikely we'll see those numbers published anywhere, but that probably has more to do with the lack of a reporting mechanism; the numbers aren't out there because nobody's making an effort to collect them. If it were me, and I was making a serious effort to research the viability of getting into this business, I would consider getting these kinds of numbers absolutely critical to creating a business plan. In the current state of the industry, you have to know and understand these metrics because that's the only way you know if you're going to make money on a given scene. Here's an idea for the OP: if you really want this information, offer to pay for it. Figure out who the right people are to talk to and offer them money for their time and information. It's pretty simple really.

Brandon, your sales are limited by your distributor. You are an industry icon and very good at promoting your stuff, but some of the top retailers aren't selling your movies. qz3fwd, leave the insults at home. The porn industry doesn't get legislation passed and no one in the industry supports SOPA. If you think current piracy levels aren't hurting the porn industry then you just aren't paying attention. Search google for ten titles. Count the number of torrent sites that dominate the first page of results. Google will not tweak their algorithm to limit the dominance of those sites despite the fact that they make tons of money from porn industry advertisers.

Many of the "right people" are users of this site. Try being nice to them. It might help you in the area of goal realization. Just a hunch. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow
I looked up "Faces Loaded 2" on Adult Video Universe where I tend to buy a DVD or three, and despite the movie being out for some time, there isn't cover art for it or the first installment. That would tend to disuade a potential buyer from investing if they didn't know more about the product, because the dvds that lack that kind of info tend to be "fly by night" operations or discontinued titles.
Thanks....I let the salesperson know about this. Not sure if the distributor needs to e-mail artwork or not but I appreciate the feedback.

I would first target independent Director/Producer types that own their own product but fall under someone else's brand for distribution, such as Evil Angel or JJV. Those guys would be my top targets, primarily because the distribution arrangement simplifies the entire business model. But, understand as well that the business model is a bit different for outfits like Brazzers that are running a network of sites and producing content to support those sites. It's different because what they are going for is subscriber retention and growth first, and then later on, they might package some of those scenes together in their own branded DVDs or sell them off for comps.

Google, Bing, etc. would tweak their algorithms if the big players such as Vivid, Wicked, Adam and Eve, JJV, Evil Angel, Elegant Angel and others got together, formed a trade association, and sued them for damages. Or maybe that's already happening and I don't know what I'm talking about.
I am fully aware of the extent of piracy on both mainstream content as well as porn. Thank you. Why is it whenever technology advances, content owners have to be pulled kicking and screaming to follow new technologies, and resist adjusting their business models, all the while whining like babies about piracy to everybody? http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/10/100-years-of-big-content-fearing-technologyin-its-own-words.ars At least the porn industry is more willing to adapt and some have started embracing innovative technologies.

^What are these new innovative technologies you speak of? Please tell us how the adult industry can adapt and prosper with the current level of piracy.
You are confusing me with a businessman, not a fan. I just like porn, simple as that. When there's money, I spend it. When there's not, I enjoy watching it. Having said that, I am oddly in the right place at the right time once in a while (SHE IS HALF MY AGE #7 has probably outsold all the other volumes in the series combined). It gives me a thrill to be in the same room as the ladies. Imagine a violinist being given a Stradivarious to play and that's as close as I can describe being with Cathy Heaven. Like any vacation, there are bills that must be paid. I'll keep finding ways to get a late checkout no matter what.

So how much did it cost and what was the profit? It sounds like u went broke.
Update: Not to stir anything up but the site was contacted. They are aware that no artwork is displayed and declined the offer to have it sent to them. The salesperson for the distributor is as stumped as I am and has no explanation.
I'm not trying to be vague. I'm just saying I don't operate that way. I spend my own money and there is no budget. A release like SHE IS HALF MY AGE #7 that does well more than makes up for mistakes. In 2011, I re-released 23 dvds previously released by a different distributor and just 3 new releases. Like I say, when I have money, I spend it. When I don't, I enjoy the work of others. As a fan, I turned a hobby into a business and now it's turning back into a hobby.

Brandon, you're obviously a very intelligent guy. Why not run your business more like, well, a business? I understand this whole labor of love thing, but it seems to me that you could do both.
