Either you're in L.A. and get to shoot there, or you're not (OK, you could also be in SF, Las Vegas or Florida, but that's basically it). No company will pay flying you out from your hometown to L.A. or to Florida or whatever. And pricey on-location-shoots (as in normal features) are simply not regularly scheduled, except for perhaps some tropical getaway or whatever, but you don't see them very often. Perhaps something different with contract stars, though. Studios don't even pay for testing and such (you probably can declare this as working expenses in your tax returns – btw. I’m sure they are taxed, as I reckon work is like freelance work, so your employer doesn't do everything for you, he might hand you over the gross price, but giving uncle sam his due is then up to you – or you'll get a friendly visit by the IRS.
