Side ways like the old or lying flat or does it matter.

Upright, just like CDs, laserdiscs, and vinyl records.

Are there any problems with those cd carry cases which hold the discs in individual pockets, rather than in their boxes?

I saw at best buy one of those shelves that stores them side ways I guess it's best not to buy.

I don't know whether to cry or laugh at how this thread is proceeding.

Look, for long-term storage, upright is recommended. If you're really worried about how a retailer is storing DVDs, well, I hope to God that you're not doing anything potentially risky like driving motor vehicles, smoking cigarettes, drinking soda pops or tap water, or going to sleep without flossing your teeth.

pockets are better than their original cases which end up being increasingly acidic thanks to the plastics.

I guess I should have been more clearer Best Buy was selling shelves for 30 bucks I think that stored your DVD's side ways not upright.
