Recently got a new computer and have transfered all the stuff i need from the old one onto the new one. I don't just want to throw it away because i don't want anybody getting it and digging around in it. How would you go about making the CPU completely useless to anyone? Should I dismantle it physically and fuck the parts up or should I do something else? Will taking the HDD out be enough or do I need to do more? thanks.

Joey's way works if you have no plans for the machine later.

If you want to give it away, do a low level format. Ya, there may be some stuff still on there someone with the right software (it's damn expensive and not common at all) could get data off of it, but it's not likely.

yeah....i didn't plan on keeping the computer or ever using it again. i just wanted to destroy it so that even though it's getting thrown away, you can't get any info off of it.

Then taking the HDD out and beating the shit out of it with a hammer and making sure to get INSIDE the HDD is the only way.

Pro data recovery groups can get stuff off failed HDDs but if the platter itself is fucked - there's nothing that can be done.

So in short; HDD out - platters out - destroy with hammer.

Have fun, it's a great stress reliever

You can try http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

boot from cd then use any of the Hard Disk Wiping programs.

of you can download Active@ KillDisk
http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

and boot off a floppy disc, that is; if you still have a floppy drive.

My favorite is fdisk. Though the best way is to keep the heads on the platter, not even the NSA can get info off of the dust that's left. Burning is also good but may not be complete.

Throw it out a third story window to the pavement below than break up the remainder with a bat or hammer. Worked great when I did it. So many pieces in such little time.

Skeet, trap, or just at a range. An ounce of lead will take care of most storage medium.

How far do you need to go? Who are you protecting yourself from?

For most people just remove the old hard disk, put it in a cheap USB enclosure and run a "disk wipe" utility that completely overwrites a disk. Now you have a working computer to either donate or save for future needs.

If there's something more serious on there you don't want police to get to - a tax evasion plan, etc - then you may want a better wipe utility that makes repeated passes to wipe residual magnetism. I think Mac OSX has one. Without this it's possible to use a highly modified board and some other equipment and read the data that used to be there.

If you have National War Plans on the computer and have to worry about military intelligence agencies then you need to worry about RAM chips too. After doing the wiping above install unix and do "make buildworld" in a loop for a day or two. Otherwise they can use a SQUID and tell what used to be in the RAM for a week or two after it was last turned off. Hopefully you don't have to protect yourself from this level of attack.

The point it you can do fine without getting destructive. Certainly there is no need to go further than removing the material from the hard disk platter surface, and I've never gone even that far myself.

If you live near the ocean, just toss the old hard drive in. If not, go out deep in the woods and bury it.

I think I've destroyed at least 60 or 70 hard drives that way.

In the power supply? Yes.
In the harddrive? No. It only gets +/-12V.

Correct. Once the hard drive is disconnected from the CPU its completely safe to handle and destroy if one is so inclined.

Capacitors just need time to discharge anyways. Keep things grounded.

Blow it up. Pur acid on it. Gasoline it and throw fire on it. Throw it into a river. Mail it to a Siberia.

If you take the hard drive apart to get the platters out, be careful of the magnets. These are very strong, and also brittle. If you let them snap together they may throw out chips of metal that can cause eye injury.

Safety glasses are a good idea.

Proving that when the only tool you have is a (sledge)hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
Opening an RPG with a sledge hammer? I'm curious how this guy used to handle car repairs. He was in a fucking workshop , use smaller tools.
Darwin candidate though. Not everybody can claim that.

A little pricey, but you could charge people to do it for them if you had one of these.

I can just imagine the fun to be had around the IT department with that one. Hey, Jim, throw me that demagnetiser. Whoops.

Did Mrs. 60 ever do this?

Well, if you're not ultra paranoid or doing something illegal, DBAN will suffice. It's not going to beat the government or anything, but will do a decent job beyond consumer recovery tools.

Certainly not as fun as destroying the drive, but wiping is absolutely the thing to do if you're going to donate/sell/gift your old machines/DVR's/whatnot.
