Hi

I’m going to L.A. for a while from next week on.

I’m interested in starting a career in the adult industry on the technical side.

My final goal would be to become a director/producer. I would like to start as a camera operator. I am really talented with the camera and because I see that this is really an issue in the actual industry, I think that this would make the best starting point for me.

I have no clue how the industry works in the valley.
Is it essential to be in any guild or something like that to get a job as a cameraman?

What is the way to go for me?

Thanks for any seriously advice.

Your timing sucks. You should be in Las Vegas this weekend, where the Adult Entertainment Expo is in full swing. Since most of the players are going to be burning the candle at both ends during the show, I don't expect much of anything to get done in Chatsworth next week.

At any rate, there isn't a guild, but there is something of a clique. Not being in the business myself, my information may be incomplete, but it seems that most "directors" do their own camerawork, budgets being what they are.

As far as getting into the business goes, it seems that mostly it involves hanging out on porn sets and doing lots of freebie work. Your mileage may vary.

Good luck! We could definitely use some better camerawork.

Dude think he's going to get laid by pornstars if he learns how to work a camera.

I am not going to work for free. This wouldn’t be anything like professional.

What would you do to get in contact with this “clique”? Just knocking on doors?

You are just telling what you would think, right?

Who said porn was professional? lol

Like I said, the Expo would have been your best bet. Since you missed that, and since you haven't established any relationships here in the forums, I can only suggest you call around and talk to anyone who's willing to give you the time of day.

The Expo would be the only way to network for someone new trying to get in, other then that it will be almost impossible unless you know someone and have some sort of screener to show your work.

OK I"ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Why don't you make a couple of your own fuck films to show what you can do, and shop them around to the studios.

I think there are more problems to overcome, to bring a movie successfully to the market, than just being able to shoot some footage and edit it.

But I honestly thank you for your advice.

I'd suggest that you just try and break in to the mainstream movie/TV industry in LA. If you are really bad at it, or you just fall in with a really rough crowd, I reckon that you will end up filming porn in no time.

There is no "guild" as pretty much every job in porn in non-union. Check Craig's List, there are postings a plenty. Last time I advertised for a cameraman, though, I got 50 replies (and 5 weeks later I still get emails on that ad.) I wound up hiring the first guy. Without a demo dvd, though, it will be hard to get anyones attention, as almost everyone has samples of their work.

If you want to shoot porn, I would primary develop your skills at steady cam. You need to learn to shoot fast, almost like shooting live sports.
