I don't want to seem like a dick for posting this. But I just found this really interesting, and I wouldn't mind some possibly helpful feedback on it.
I received this e-mail today from this girl I know. She's not really a friend, but more like a casual acquaintance who I know through a mutual friend of ours. The girl is nice. Although she is not unattractive, I personally am not attracted to her, and I have never thought about her in "that way." Also, I never thought that she ever thought about me in "that way" either. Plus, she already has a kid, which is a huge turn-off even for women who I am attracted to.
So, imagaine my surprise when I read this e-mail from her and see that it is a very flattering message telling me that she finds me attractive, giving me her phone number, and telling me that she's interested in the two of us getting to know each other better.
I don't know how to respond to this. I've been thinking about not responding at all and just leaving it alone. But I think she might be insulted if I just ignore her. But then, she might also be insulted if I tell her I'm not interested. I've also been thinking that I should just call her and agree to go out with her, while also finding a way to make it clear that I'm not interested in anything romantic. The only problem with that is that she's already made it clear that she wants to be more than friends. So I'm not sure how to handle this.
For this reason, I kinda feel like the tables have turned, and I'm now the girl instead of the guy. I now kinda know what women probably have to deal with when guys they're not interested in come on to them. You want to be polite. But at the same time, you don't want to send any misleading signals. Yeah, I feel like I'm the girl right now.
I've had women make passes at me before. But usually, women are much more subtle about it. Women will typically flirt, use body language, and send little signals to see if you're interested. For this reason, their advances are much more easier to avoid if you're not interested. You can just pretend to be oblivious to them. That way, you don't have to worry about hurting their feelings with a rejection.
But I think this is the first time that a woman has ever boldly just come out and said, "I like you. Here's my number. Call me." (OK. She didn't say it like that. But you get the point). In my experience, women just usually aren't that forward about it. Thus, I don't remember ever having to deal with something like this before. I'm not sure how to reply to it, or if I should reply at all. I know women have deal with this all the time. But I also think it's usually easier for a woman to give a man a straightforward rejection than it is the other way around.
Any feedback or suggestions on how to respond to this?

Make sure this isn't a prank first.
It's very easy to fake an email address, and you'll look like an idiot if you respond and it turns out she didn't send the message.

Or you could tell her you're HIV positive?

Or you could just be honest and upfront with her...

Be honest. Tell her you've got someone else on the hook, or that you're otherwise unavailable. There are ways to reject someone without being hurtful.
Nobody wants to be rejected, but a tactful, quick one is infinitely less painful than twirling on the hook for ages. Been there, done, it, got the t-shirt.

I would not recommend going out with her, even if you plan on telling her you aren't interested in the date. If she goes through a lot of trouble to look hot, worry about her moves or even consider going further than just hanging out-- she is going to feel like an idiot when you turn her down. Even though it seems like the nice thing to do, you are just wasting her time.
You can be honest without being mean, or you can fib a little... go with what another guy said, tell her you are interested in someone and you don't want to be disrespectful to either of them. ;)

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I just called her and, after beating around the bush for a while by asking about how the family is doing and how she spent her holiday, I just asked her if she minded if we just hang out as friends. She said that's OK with her. But I still feel awkward about it now.

That's life. I haven't had girls throwing themselves at me much, but I've had a couple of situations like that. You can never know how it will turn out, the most likely option is that you grow a bit more apart. There's no magic answer, just wait and see what happens, you were nice to her about it and that's all you can do.

She'll get over it as soon as she finds someone else to go after.

I think karma may now be getting back at me for this.
As I have a terrible and harmful habit of falling in love very easily with girls who don't seem to know I exist, I'm now madly in love with a young lady who won't give me the time of day, and only wants to be friends. But than again, what else is new?
