Hello Again
I was wondering How & Who determine when a porn title go out of print?
Is it mostly determine on sales, or legal problems?

Something like that would be determined by the studio that owns the rights to said porno.
Are you thinking in terms of vintage porn, or more recent stuff?

It's pretty rare to find a title not available, save for vintage titles and some 70's to early 80's stuff. Catalog titles is where a lot of the money is made for some producers/studios. Was it a comp?

I was always under the impression that most gonzo porn goes through an initial production run and then that's it. Obviously, there are bound to be some rare exceptions, but so much new stuff comes out each week, I can't see why there would be a demand for older stuff to get reprinted. But what do I know?
I find it hard to believe that studios are making a killing selling catalog titles. I was under the impression that the majority of money a film makes occurs during it's first year of release. Rental stores account for a large percentage of business. Once a given film is relegated to catalog status, who orders it; aside from, perhaps, a collector trying to find all of the films his favorite starlet has been in. Really, who amongst us is going to remember "Fuck My Ass #37" in ten years?

You have to figure that they want to sell as many older titles as possible since there would be greater margin in these.
Zane Entertainment is a classic example of a studio going out of business and their catalog being out of print. Back in the 90's they were making the hardest anal-oriented porn in the US but unfortunately owner Chuck Zane basically abandoned his company and its a real damn shame too since alot of their stuff was really great. At least I had the presence of mind to buy many of their titles when they were first released as they are now collector's items.
I remember when Odyssey Group Video when out of business a lot of their titles went out of print like almost all Rodney Moore movies but I'm glad they're being released again through EXP because Rodney Moore owned those titles. Not sure if it would be possible if OGV had all exclusive rights for those titles.
Given how many compilations are in existance, that studios try to profit off of their existing catalog as much as possible would be a reasonable guess.

The production costs on the older film had been recovered (assuming) ages ago so your margin when selling these movies will be higher. The flaw here is that new releases are usually significantly more. I dunno, maybe I'm flawed here, but look at it this way, where do you stand to make more money as a studio/producer: selling 100 copies of Deep Throat or 100 copies of a brand new release?
Plus, there are lots of VHS releases that have never been mastered for DVD. Especially if the company was or is considered a second string company, or is out of business completely, a VHS only release might as well just be out of print.
Getting more DVD's run off by a professional shop isn't going to be cheap. Unless you're doing one-off DVD-R's you're not going to make money reissuing a title for just a few orders.
A couple of FYI's: Pleasure Productions picked up at least some of Zane's catalog. Not many retailers carry or list them, though.
Odyssey distributed Rodney's stuff, they didn't own it. However, his stuff got listed among their assets during bankruptcy so he had to take legal action to reclaim them. Sunshine bought Odyssey's catalog. They've released a few older titles and put some other stuff into comps.

I see what you're saying and yeah, once production costs have been recovered, it's basically all gravy. I just don't see that there's very much demand for older titles. Even with newer titles, if you wait a few weeks, you can often get them (brand new) for considerably less than what you would pay the first week following release.
I ran across someone in Rame.net back 3 or 4 years ago said that over 80% of the porn shot since 1980s are out of print! If you go back to 70s it might be 90% out of print! It seems that no one picks up the rights to product it if the studio goes under or they do not continue to product it for their suppliers. Also, with the DVD being more popular then VHS; my guess is that that figure will become much higher probably in the near future 95% of all porn will be out of print and will be hard to obtain "new" copies. And as VHS age and become useless; it might be 99% out of print. Thus you will continue to have th e 1% that are called "classics" left.
Also, there is considerable work and cost to make a new run of an existing older video. Not only do you have to burn like 500 copies but di the cover, jacket and labor to insert it and wrap it together. So it pretty pricey to do it and keep it in inventory. I hope they place all these in a downloadable database on the internet and those interested can download it and burn it on to their DVDs. I think, for myself it the charge was like $2 or so a video for the older ones; I would pay to download it! It would be profitable for the studios too; no labor involve or production costs!
There are indeed costs involved in making individual scenes available for sale on the Internet. Maybe not as much as doing a DVD run, but the scene has to be extracted from the DVD or tape, redone in MPEG or some other Internet format, there has to be server space to load it on, somebody has to put up the web server and manage it, you have to pay for bandwidth, etc.
Don't forget that not all scenes can be expected to sell at the same rate, so the sale of an individual scene would have to recoup not only the cost of putting it up, but some of the overall costs as well. In other words, I doubt you'll be seeing $2 scenes any time soon.

Regarding the last two comments - I can definitely see a scenario in the future where customers pay to download scenes the same way they download MP3's currently. I don't know what the price point would be per scene, but I have a tough time seeing people paying more than $2 for a single scene, unless it was something really special. And keep in mind that if you make it too pricey, you just encourage people to find ways around the system - renting the DVD and duplicating it, for instance, or using Bit Torrent to get it for free. That sort of thing.
I think part of the question is the size of the market itself. I've heard, for example, that 10,000 pieces sold is an extraordinarily successful run of a given DVD title, at least on the gonzo side of the business. That's hardly a mass market. You have to ask yourself what the real demand is for that Monica Sweetheart scene from 4 years ago? How many paid downloads are you likely to get? 1,000? 2,000? How many downloads do you need to get to make up your costs of putting the scene up there in downloadable format to begin with?
Another point to consider is the extent to which a system like this would cannibalize sales of new releases. Why should I pay for that new DVD release with Monica Sweetheart on the cover when, for little cost, I can download any of the hundreds of scenes she's ever performed in?
Nonetheless, I think something like this is inevitable. In fact, the convenience of this type of system might have the effect of growing the market more than ever, making it easier for fans to spend money on just the stars they want to see, as opposed to forking out for the entire DVD and then waiting for it to come in the mail, and then worrying about the girlfriend/wife/kids finding it. Certainly, it would give studios instant feedback about what's working and what isn't. If you get 10,000 downloads of a Velicity Von scene, but only 1,000 downloads of a Sierra Sin scene, then that gives you a pretty good idea what your customers are interested in. And maybe you have a feedback system built in as well, so that when someone downloads a scene, they can come back to your site and give that scene a 1-10 rating, and maybe leave comments as well. I can think of all sorts of ways that smart companies could use that information.
No single price point is going to make everyone happy. However, given the number of people buying entire DVD's for one or two of the scenes, I don't think a $5 download is going to go without any takers.
also titles by the great company "Western Visuals". Tape titles of their great work are floating around all over the place. And "Paradise Visuals" as well.
Bought some dvd releases of the great company "Video-X-Pix" recently and I am very very impressed. Just judging from what I bought. I cant vouch for the whole catalog. But the print materials for those that were shot on film were cleaned up and for video shot stuff the video masters seemingly were used for dvd transfer. "Erotic World of Angel Cash", one of the titles I bought and one of my favorite all-time XXX films, was seemingly intact from the way I remember it, yippee!, and the print quality was impeccable.

I don't think it's a question of what makes people happy, but how the economics work out. Does it make more sense to charge $5/scene and get 2,000 paid downloads, or would it be better to charge $2/scene and get 10,000 downloads? My sense is that companies would tend to play around and tweak these things to find their sweet spot. Maybe you sell packages - $5 for the new Velicity Von scene, or $7 for that scene plus two "catalog" scenes of your choice.
I like to ad that a majority of the sales of DVDs(more dvds now) and tapes is to the rental marketplace. So a 1,500 sale would be to the rental stores outlets and maybe double to triple that is sold to individuals if it is an average porno video. If it is very hot; then the rental sales would triple and sales to individual would be 5 to 10 times the ordinary sales distribution. This is in the U.S. marketplace. I don't know about Europe or Asia marketplaces.
OGV/AGV is an EXCELLENT example. I still have customers asking for titles from the HOT BOD & TAIL PIPE series.
active consumers are collectors not only of genres, but of their favorite talent. i've seen fans on ADT inquire about Daniella Rush titles, for example. I'm happy to give my customers the chance to see something they may have missed (like a PURITAN video title).
Then there are the anti-implant customers that prefer their favorite talent pre-augmentation. Like Cherry Mirage before she became Brianna Banks in an old North Pole series, or Sunrise Adams in (again) a PURITAN video.
Middle aged consumers nostalgic for the adult video they grew up with as teens are being served by our friend at VIDEO X PIX in Las Vegas. A gold mine for Annette Haven fans.
probably boring to some, but i think this is a great thread.

A couple of corrections. Hot Bods & Tail Pipe was from Celestial Productions, which is now called Lethal Productions.
Mirage became Briana Banks. Cherry Mirage was once called Stryc-9 , but that's about it. Two different performers.
