I have noticed a lot of people in this forum (myself included) are new to Adult Films. I have heard a lot of comments like...
"I'm just getting into it now..."
"I only have a couple of titles..."
"I just ordered my first ammatuer film from..."
So, here are a few questions for all of us.....:
----------------------------------------------------
Could the internet spark a Sexaul Revolution (or shift in morals) similar to that of the 60's?
Will casual sex become even more acepted?
Are studios making their films with this influence in mind (ie..taking responsibility)?
----------------------------------------------------
Any thoughts....

Robert-
What a great question. I think there will be two lasting effects:
1. the positive effect -people will be able to experiment sexually without embarrasment. we'll be able to explore our sexuality through forums, chat rooms, movies, even toys (i never wold have bought a plastic penis in a store but online anything goes.) Sex without shame is a wonderful thing -as long as it's not sex to boost ones self-esteem and as long as people are safe. the internet may just be the best tool for sex education.
2. the negative effect - there will be a large number of people who have even less contact with real people. their whole lives will be virtual. they'll fulfill their sexual needs in chat rooms and picture palaces instead of with other humans.
but on the whole -i think the internet will do wonders for sexual awareness and dispelling the taboo associated with perfectly normal sexual activities.

I think that these changes will be due to the flow of money in various devices that use internet as a data communications medium.
Look how successful participatory sports like Gamenet and others are. People play Quake, Doom, Warcraft, Half-Life, sword-n-sorcery, and games by Sierra. Well, what would happen when hardware is linked across the network just like all the gameplayers are doing now. Since they're all playing with each other already....
There are some experimental bodysuits that you and your SO can wear while watching a DVD movie. This was mentioned [url=468575]here</A. Evidently, entrepreneurs in the industry are trying to figure out how to use the Internet to touch, scratch, tickle, ummm ummm other people.
[url=468576]Here </Ais an example of something that is quite a bit to think about. Is it really real?

Well, the Internet is definitely making sex more accessible and less embarassing (I still feel like I'm underage every time I frequent the local adult establishments). And people are definitely buying: I recently attended some training with a major e-commerce web hosting company whose VP of marketing said flat out that every single e-commerce venture is losing money right now to gain market share...except for sex related busineses.
I think the widespread nature of sex on the Internet (stores, chat rooms, webcams, picture sites, etc.) has made more people feel open to experiment personally. But I have to agree with Steph that there is the negative aspect to all of this.
To answer your questions, RJason, I don't think we'll see a return to the wild, carefree days of the '20s, '60s, and '70s. The realities are too stark: STDs of all sorts are on the rise and people are more status conscious than ever (you didn't see people during the Sexual Revolution wanting to know the sexual history of their partners, nor what their occupations & income were). Body image is a lot more important today than it used to be.
So I don't think casual sex will become more commonplace...just the opposite: more monogamy (more sexual experimentation with your own partner). And, I'm sure to the delight of Betty Dodson, there will be lots more Sex For One...
It's interesting to see how the adult industry seems to be reflecting the new digital age. Not only have condoms become a lot more commonplace (much to the chagrin of some, I know...), but you're also seeing more and more warnings along the lines of "these visual depictions are ficticious and do not exhibit the normal range of human interaction in relationships." IOW, it's not par for the course to pick up someone and be fucking within the hour. No shit, right? But with sex so readily available to view and purchase (http://www.gppays.com for example), the lines between fantasy and reality are blurring.
I think another intriguing question is whether there will be a backlash against sex for sex's sake. I mean, I've seen so much sex that I've gotten pretty jaded about the actual acts themselves--I'd much rather cuddle and spend quality time with women; I get a much longer sense of satisfaction and pleasure from that than the quick fix of eye candy.
What do you all think?

Saki,
I would have to agree with you that Love and relationship is what we all want in life. I, for one, am 24 years old and I am still looking for the right person...I personally am not into the idea of going out, getting drunk, and waking up next to a stranger. I loathe the thought...IMHO Sex is not as important as our society beleives. Even though I am not religious, my beleifs and values are strong. But, the interest I have is purely academic. I think that the majority of people are not "free thinkers". Sure, we all have freedoms, but most people choose to act in "Normal" ways. A lot of people end up following typical paterns. So, my concern in the above is that these impressionable viewers could have an altered view of "Normal". So, I would have to agree with you that Adult Entertainment...is not reality. But, my concern is that the general person is very influenced by such material. And that it could be a bad thing for our society if this XXX access becomes to popular. I think that the internet is out of control. And I think that becuase it's not censored very much...the influences it can have are a test of our values. Forget Clinton, the internet is a perfect example of the state of the union.
Thanks Saki, Steph, & Startide...
I hope that there are others with opinions on the matter...I love to see new perspectives...

I should say that I don't think 'casual sex' is a bad or immoral thing -as long as it's safe and for the right reasons (you can't have a positive sexual experience unless you love and respect yourself.) Did any of you read Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins? He does a wonderful job portraying love and pleasure.
Anyway - I don't think the Internet or adult movies will increase casual sex levels -mostly because casual sex is often for the wrong reason (loneliness.)
RJason-
I hope you don't think that the Internet should be censored. I know the masses can't think for themselves -but that's because it has never been encouraged -in fact it has been highly discouraged by religion, government, society in general.
The Internet is an incredible medium for self-expression that beats the heck out of violence. I hope it remains free and wild.
BTW -thanks for starting this thread -a very important discussion.

"the lines between fantasy and reality are blurring." -in more ways than just sex -very acute statement.

Ah...beautiful...Steph...I like your comment. Which is the cause and which is the effect? Who takes the responsibility? Free thinking has been labotomized by the censors. That's a thought that never crossed my mind. very interesting....

I agree, the net has open new doors to an old taboo. I would also feel like I am young age too going into a adult video store. But, we still need to visit the real world to keep our sanity.

Wow! Great thread! Timely for me, too.

I have been thinking about the concept of sexual healing lately and am going to post a topic about that on Sex Talk.

In 1978 I worked as the projectionist in a porn theater. We never had women going in, other than those of us who worked there. Not even couples, although couples did go to the other theater in a better part of town. But we women who worked there enjoyed the porn. Thanks to the internet, dvd's can be ordered without embarrassment.

If more women do order porn, we may get more women-friendly porn that works on our psychological needs and issues.

Some of you feel 'too young' to go into a porn shop. Think how it is if you're older - I'm a 45 year old woman. Thanks to the altered views of reality in the media, 45 is hardly seen as sexual. And you know what people think of 70 year old guys renting porn.

I don't feel that porn *causes* a shift in morals - I think people have unexpressed needs and gravitate to the porn that works out their needs. Especially as an older person, you deal with your 'shadow' and let your id out to play. If it's play, and not wallowing in your worst impulses, it has a potential to be so positive, if the right materials are available.

Some younger people might not realize how much their sexuality expresses and shapes their spirit, and might think what I'm saying is a bunch of crap, but wait 20 years, keep your eyes open! It gets GOOD! I can't wait to see what develops when I'm older!

Sorry, going to yak some more

About changing ideas of what is normal, including sex acts, and body image.

The Kinsey Report (1948?) found that *virtually nobody* was doing oral sex. Imagine that! Now you can go on the internet for fellatio techniques, or watch Tiffany Minx lick it like a cat. In the 70's, not all guys would go down on a woman, and some would, but had to be asked! Imagine that! So now it's anal sex, or bdsm maybe, getting its turn for exposure. What's normal, and who gets to decide? You do. Good!

BTW if you check the internet for sodomy laws, many also prohibited oral sex. Many states repealed those in the 1970's, but some states have not!

Now body image - no women shaved their legs until the flapper dresses came in in the 20's. Men would cheer in Paris when the exotic dancers raised their arms, and they caught a glimpse of the armpit hair - as naughty as pubic hair. Now women are perhaps to be as childlike and prepubescent and unthreatening as children - shave it all.

What does raising the bar on body image do? The old 1920's postcards of beautiful women had women with tummies and ordinary faces, and they were a turn-on. Is it an improvement for a large number of men to feel short-changed if they end up with a woman who looks like the women in 70's porn? There's not enough really leggy, busty women to go around. Will there be a lot of men for whom what they can have is never enough?

How will the internet affect my sex life? It already has, profoundly.

Pre-Internet, I knew I loved sex, I knew I loved edgy sex (none of that lights out shit...), I knew I liked frequent sex, I knew I always liked a new twist to sex... and I "knew" that this made me a pervert, destined to live on the fringe of society, a social misfit, outcast, unclean! You get the picture.

Since the Internet: Maybe I'm not a weirdo after all! Maybe there are lots of us weirdos (misery loves company)! Maybe its OK to want to push the sexual envelope. Or maybe it's just better because I have someone to talk with about it.

I used to think I was a sexual daredevil, now I frequently think I'm a prude.

The three intial questions asked-
--------------
Could the internet spark a Sexusl Revolution (or shift in morals) similar to that of the 60's?

Will casual sex become even more acepted?

Are studios making their films with this influence in mind (ie..taking responsibility)?
--------------

1. I already believe that the internet has sparked something. I wouldn't call it a revolution, but it has definitely made it easier for people with similiar interests to meet, converse, etc. You can jump on any chatroom in MSN for any city and get a sexual partner by nightfall (I noticed RJason is in San Diego, the msn chatroom for that town always has neighborhood whores surfing the web lookin for nook.) Untrue? Not at all. I would suggest all ADt'ers to check out a chatroom and see how easy it is to meet women and men off the internet for sex.

2. Casual sex has become a reality for most people and I assure you that if you look at the youth (under 18) that this has become rampant. I don't blame the internet as much as I blame all of popular culture, the internet being much a part of it as much as MTV or Hollywood. Casual sex is as nonsensical as monogamous sex; its all explained by culture and values that are self-created, whether by internet, religion, caste systems, geo-politcal, etc. So if willing people agree to this, so be it. The world is too diverse to have a common sexual revolution.

3. With responsible studios, we also have those I consider to be raising the bar of what we will see in porn, and responsibility in adult is very much a personal issue. Some companies are getting very extreme...I don't think its a downward spiral, others may disagree. But this also translates into everything in pop culture. Did the internet make this popular? Imagine shows like Jackass, Fear Factor, I Bet you will... These shows are pushing the limit, and they are on TV. I watched that new show CSI and it showed a 16 year old girl ripped in her gut, close up, and gory as hell. Again, I don't think the internet is the culprit as much as we are just experiencing a moral decay in society.

Which came first? The internet is for information; the fringes of society now have a meeting ground. The internet seems to bring things into more perspective and availability. Its a strange progress of society. I think the internets greatest ability is to bring answers and more questions to everything that used to be surrounded by mystique. Sex, violence, politics, its all fair game on the internet. Remember, the rise of AIDS in Africa is not because of the internet, the culture of death in 3rd world countries is not prominent because of Rotten.com. But, these issues can be explored very thoroughly on the internet. To me, its more a powerful tool. But with a tool, you need a user. And the internet is not any worse or better than those who are behind the websites....

I agree with almost everything you say, but one contradiction stared me in the face on your intial reply. You state that you never would have purchased a plastic penis in a store, but would (and did) online. However, in your last sentence you say:

"..but on the whole -i think the internet will do wonders for sexual awareness and dispelling the taboo associated with perfectly normal sexual activities."

If that last sentence is true, then in the (near)future, will you buy that plastic penis at a store? How long will it take for the taboos to disappear? Have they already?

Red - that was three years ago. at this point i wouldn't see any difference between walking into an adult shop and buying a toy and walking into the grocery store and getting a can of beans.
i don't think there's a definitive answer - depends who you're talking about and which taboos. in america people who are sexually open will always be battling the puritan mentalities of those who thrive in shame. however, over the last few years i've seen a ton of examples of people who've experienced some kind of sexual liberation inspired by things they've learned/read/written on the internet.

If your comment was 3 years old, then my point is moot. It just struck me as odd, that's all.

As for the sexual revolution and the internet...I don't think the internet is anything special when it comes to a revolution. It's just another conduit that is used to move sexual freedom along. I'm not old enough to remember XXX theatres where porn was shown on the big screen, but there was a time where that was the only way to get your porn fix. Then came the age of the Beta/VHS tapes, and that heralded another method of viewing sexual material within the privacy of your homes. Then along comes the internet, and now you don't have to leave your house to order anything pornographic. It's all done online.

The beauty of the internet is in the way communities such as AdultDVDtalk.com spring up that allow for freedom of discussion, views, etc. In this way, the internet is a useful tool in a revolution. But the basic premise of any revolution is the involvment of people. IMHO, this is another example of cause and effect. Will the internet 'cause' another sexual revolution? I think not, but the internet will certainly be seen as a conduit that brought more people to the table when it comes to discussing attitudes towards sex and pornography.
