I could put this in polls, but I think it's better suited here since usenet is such a niche interest.

How's your usenet news server? Are you happy with it? Who is it? My main one is from my ISP and it blows dead bear; I'm going to end up changing services when my contract is up. (Pretty much the same reason I left my last provider.)

I have a free account on Teranews, but I'm too cheap to pay a monthly fee for usenet that I think I should already get from my ISP.

I think you're pissing in the wind changing ISP's to try and get better, free, usenet. Just get a reliable ISP that doesn't impose download caps or anything, and spend the ten bucks a month for an account with Easynews, or one of the other usenet services.

Check out Usenet.com - they provide access to every available news group at affordable prices. You'll never go back to free news servers again!

I have to chime in here.

I have been using easynews.com for
well over the last 5 years now.

They are very reasonably priced
at $9.95 per month/20gigs which ever
comes first. However what sets them
apart from other usenet providers is
they have a web interface and a global
search. This makes finding what you are
looking for a breeze without wading through
the 1000's of spam posts. They also have an
autounrar feature which gives you the choice
of downloading the rar's or the actual unrar'd
file.
They do also of course support nntp connections as well.
Both the web and nntp support SSL connections.
I have tried all the premium usenet providers
and would never think of leaving easynews.
I really can't say enough about this service.

I used usenetserver.com, but they didn't carry a newsgroup I liked, so I switched to Giganews. It's a little bit more expensive though.

Make sure to get Xnews. It's even better than the old free agent I once used.

Most newsgroup providers have a way to request a group be added and have no problem doing so unless it's a questionable group.

I use xnews too. I tried free agent once and it confused me. I used newsXpress b/f xnews which was like a basic version of xnews so the transition was easy for me.

I now use easynews as a provider. I'm still using Agent (paid, not free). Once you get it configured it's a very good reader. (On the other hand, I'm still using an old version because I didn't like the upgrade.)

I'll take a look at Xnews sometime, but I don't know what it would have that would make me switch.

Sounds reasonable, until you think (again) that every ISP should give you the same thing with your account. I think what bothers people is that they have to pay anything extra at all for a decent Usenet server in 2007.
