In my HTML book that I have, it says that if you type '®.' or '®', your webpage will print up the circled R. I tried this on the ADT write a review page, and it does work, at least in the Verdana font. The reason I'm asking isn't related to writing reviews. I'm writing an article for a knitting magazine. One of the online yarn vendors wants to send me some yarn that is made from Tactel nylon, whose name is trademarked by the DuPont company. DuPont ordered this vendor to stop using the word Tactel without the encircled R. The yarn vendor told me that the font used on their website doesn't allow them to display the circled R. DuPont told them to hire a website consultant to fix the problem. The yarn vendor is a small company, and doesn't have a lot of money to hire consultants. Anyway, you can have a look at the webpage I'm talking about: Read to the bottom of the page, to see what's going on with the fonts. Thanks. If I save the catnap page, and put in '& #174' after 'tactel', it works just fine here. The page doesn't specify any font faces until well after 'tactel'. I suppose it just uses the browser's default font for rendering the part with 'tactel'. [Link] |

If DuPont is like any other big company, they probably contract out all their website work, then get charged way more than is reasonable for the what gets done. I should email this thread to the good folks at DuPont's Tactel division, and let them know a bunch of porn fans solved this momentous problem. Then we should bill DuPont for all the work. [Link] |

For most of the page they simply use whatever the browser's default font is. Try setting your browser's default font to "Courier" and you'll see what I mean. If the yarn vendor people themselves can't see the circled R if they put it in, they must have their browser setup to use a font that doesn't support that character. An easy solution is to simply specify "Tahoma" for the page as a whole. That knitting business really is cut-throat isn't it? [Link] |

Am I doing something wrong? Kperv, both the textile and the yarn businesses are cutthroat. There isn't much profit margin in either. There are way too many yarn vendors, and with the Internet , the numbers have gone even higher. Not so different from the porn business. Just like there are now too many so-called 'directors' in porn, there are too many knitwear designers who decide they must have their own lines of yarns with their names all over it. Doesn't matter if they know anything about the yarn spinning business. [Link] |

Tony C, yes, there have been dye problems with some of these yarns. As well as too many knots, excessive fuzzing, uneven strands, etc. But if a knitter has the gall to complain on a message board, some of these designers will throw a 'Jewel' type fit (hope she isn't reading this). [Link] |
