| mr_sphinx Member 117 Posts 10/08 | I should have known it was too good to be true. I love porn on Blu-ray, I know a lot of people don't, but I do. There is currently a terrible selection. I don't like most of Digital Playground's porn, so that's 95% of adult Blu-rays out. Hustler has given us Duck Dynasty XXX, Boardwalk Empire XXX and Game of Thrones XXX. In other words, three interchangeable parody titles. But I bought them. I even found the GOT XXX disc (which has never been in stock at Adult DVD Empire). Back in December 2013, Hustler was supposed to give us "Medieval MILF Squirters" in 3D. 3D is, as far as I am concerned, code for "Blu-ray", because I don't care about it, but if it gets me porn on Blu-ray, well, so be it. There were tweets about it here, here and here, which all mention 3D. FYI--I made screencaps of these tweets if anybody feels like removing them. I looked forward to the "Medieval MILF Squirters" Blu-ray (3D) release for SIX MONTHS. Now it has been dated for June 10th, 2014, and the title changed to Medieval MILfs. Even better, it's all girl--no nasty self-jerking pop shots, just MILFs, toys and squirting, but finally, also in full, proper 1080p, not compressed download 1080p. But now, Girlfriends Films has told me: "Yes, Medieval Milfs is shipping this week and should be available at DVD Empire by June 10th. Unfortunately Hustler decided against shipping this in 3D Bluray so it will only be available as a standard disc." Again, I looked forward to this release for SIX DAMN MONTHS. I would have bought it in a heartbeat. 3D encoding killing the deal? Fine, release it on 2D Blu-ray. 3D is a nice gimmick, but since BD-25s are used, it also contributes compression issues. I don't need 3D, but again, if that's the only way for porn on Blu-ray, so be it. I really, really wanted wanted this movie on Blu-ray, and Hustler chickened out. No way in hell will I be buying this on any other format other than 2D Blu-ray or Blu-ray 3D. Thanks a lot, Hustler! EDIT: Sorry for the double-post, my mouse has been acting up. | JigglyBoobs Senior Member 1614 Posts 3/12 | I'd imagine they probably pulled the plug because they doubted the viability of doing a Blu-ray release since Blu-ray is much more expensive to produce than DVD rather than chickening out. If Blu-ray licensing and royalty fees weren't so high and if broadband internet wasn't so fast, Blu-ray probably wouldn't be threatened with extinction like it is now. |
| mr_sphinx Member 117 Posts 10/08 | First of all, every business is "in business to make money", so that neither proves nor disproves anything. Secondly, we come to the same old, and now very tired, argument about the viability of porn on Blu-ray. The simple fact is, without variety in porn, there can be no market. Of course a lot of people want what is easy and cheap, but there is definitely a market, that is largely untapped, for porn on Blu-ray, and one that, it stands to reason, is bigger than the one in 2008-09, back when porn Blu-ray releases were steadier. Cult labels like Code Red and Vinegar Syndrome have proved that there are definitely more people buying Blu-rays, and ways to produce Blu-ray titles in smaller numbers. The problems are lack of titles, lack of variety, and lack of content. On the other hand, the uncensored Asian Blu-ray porn market is booming, because they release several titles per month. Almost all of the pre-order BDs at ADE are Asian porn, and this is not being consumed in Asia (in most Asian countries, porn, regardless of optical censoring, is banned or heavily restricted), but outside it, and largely in the US, where these uncensored Asian porn labels are indeed based. Is the answer that only Asian-Americans own Blu-ray players? Of course not, the answer is that, since only those titles are released with any regularity, only that part of the market is showing sustainability. For Western porn, if you don't like DP's porn, there's 95% of Blu-ray porn wasted on you. Otherwise, there is really only the few Hustler titles. Unless you go to Europe, where again, there are more companies putting out titles than in the USA. And while I understand GOT XXX on Blu-ray, and even maybe Boardwalk Empire XXX (although that show's popularity bubble seems to have burst a bit), the geniuses at Hustler also picked Duck Dynasty XXX to put on Blu-ray over Medieval MILFs. So lets, be clear, porn where the guy is dressed like a mountain man with a false beard, would sell better in high definition than an all-girl MILF squirting release. I strongly, strongly, doubt that. Let's not even mention the lack of advertisement these releases get. And the GOT XXX BD is still on pre-order at ADE, despite being out for weeks, and my copy being in my hands. So of course, the viability of Blu-ray porn for Hustler is low, they suck at it. But they have the chance to redeem themselves if they fix their error and release MEDIEVAL MILFs on Blu-ray, along with a few other, different titles. EDIT: As for Blu-ray nearing extinction, this is not happening. The mainstream industry is just getting used to the idea that high definition formats don't appeal to as many people as a mass format like DVD does, But again, make no mistake, the market for porn on Blu-ray is there, and would be larger, if more releases and more advertisement happened. It's not like I'm the only person on the whole planet that wants these release, I'm just one of the few with the time to search for them, the ability to read the market from a consumer standpoint, and the inclination to try and better the situation. | JigglyBoobs Senior Member 1614 Posts 3/12 | You don't seem to acknowledge that the US porn industry isn't as lucrative as it once was and investing, whether it's in the product or the advertising/marketing, doesn't have the same assurance of a good return. That you've mentioned the lack of advertising should be a testament to the money not being there or the confidence in the market. I never said Blu-ray was near extinction, I just said it was threatened by high speed internet connections, which facilitate streaming or downloading 1080p, albeit compressed, video. I'm not anti Blu-ray - most of my purchases of modern mainstream films are in Blu-ray format. However with porn, I'm perfectly happy with the 720p/1080p video available from my online subscriptions and I can't see myself buying Blu-ray porn any time soon. Would I like for the Blu-ray format to thrive in porn? Of course I would, even if I don't see myself buying it but I don't object to taking off my rose tinted glasses when I'm asked. |
| mr_sphinx Member 117 Posts 10/08 | The same is true in Western Europe, where downloading and streaming are far less common. In fact, Germany recently overtook the UK to become Europe's largest Blu-ray market, and Tabu Film in Germany will begin releasing classic Euro porn on Blu-ray in July. And these markets also purchase American Blu-ray porn, and they pay a hell of a lot to do so, much more than we do, try north of US $60 a title. In the United States, things are a bit different. Many people stream and download porn, but that is only because, right now, it is the easiest and highest quality option. HD downloads are, after all clearly better than DVD. But the internet is, of course, a double-edged sword. For instance, I have long held the theory that, because you feel no ownership over a download, not only is it physically easier to pirate to others, but especially where those who have never owned or bought porn are concerned, it probably doesn't even feel like stealing. On the other hand, when I look at my physical copy of GOT XXX on Blu-ray, which I bought with money, and have sitting here in front of me, I don't want to do the Johnny Appleseed thing and upload it for people to have for free. I don't, however, feel the same way about the porn I have to download (don't ask me why), and the only thing that keeps me from sharing those files, is (don't laugh) scruples. Now, I am not dense, and I know that people pirate from DVDs often, and also from Blu-rays. The fact of the matter is, though, that it's comparatively rare to see a 1:1 Blu-ray rip of a porn title, because you would have to find someone without scruples, who also has a Blu-ray drive in their PC, and the software to rip the disc. The pirate would then have to wait hours uploading a file that is usually ~20 GB in size, and any downloaders would also have to take the time to download it, and subsequently, store this 20 GB file. No, it's much easier for all concerned to pirate from DVDs or HD downloads, or, at worst, create a compressed HD rip from a Blu-ray. You must also bear in mind that even for people who are fine with just HD downloads, the USA is likely fast approaching some kind of bandwidth capping for inter, whether it comes in the form of government regulation, or ISPs simply forcing consumers to pay more money for more bandwidth. If we get to more "4k quality" downloads (which are a joke right now, but still several GB for one scene). We could be talking 10, 20, even 50 GB of space to hold a single movie's worth of porn in "4K" quality. Even if you have the space to store all that, do you really think that ISPs will allow you to download, say, 250 GB in one night, if thousands of people are doing the same thing, night after night, on a regular basis? With HD becoming the norm now, and 4K waiting in the wings, I would be surprised if downloading can remain the cheapest and easiest option for many people for much longer. That's all well and good, but I think your mind would change if Blu-ray porn titles increased. For example, back in 2008-09, how many HD porn downloads were you getting? I know for me, the number was low, and compression was awful. But think about it, prior to December 2008, we did not have titles like The Dark Knight on Blu-ray. Prior to February 2008, the mainstream industry--and porn--were embroiled in the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD. Imagine how far the format has come, then, even since 2010, when a lot of the studios that were releasing titles on Blu-ray had stopped. Best of all, costs have decreased for producers, since the format is no longer brand new. It is still more expensive than DVD? Absolutely. Does it cost as much to get titles on Blu--ray in 2014 as it did in 2008? Absolutely not. As you say, you buy most of your mainstream titles on Blu-ray, but haven't you necessarily bought more of them in recent years then way back in 2008-09? And if mainstream titles are also available on DVD and via downloading/streaming. Why should porn be any different, albeit on a smaller level, for those who don't mind keeping a physical collection out-of-sight? To put everything another way, and more succinctly: It is clear that there is a demand for porn on physical media, and it is also clear that their is an even larger demand for high-quality porn. Clearly, these two markets intersect at Blu-ray, but Blu-ray has not really been exploited by many companies during this time. Costs are a factor, clearly, but there is also some apprehension, and for many producers and consumers, ignorance. The biggest problem is confusion about costs vs. benefits. Studios see a title and worry if it would be worth the Blu-ray investment, so they release on DVD and HD download, not realizing that in doing so, they have undermined a lot of Blu-ray sales. How many people want to double or triple dip for porn? Again, let me be clear, I think that many people, if they started to see online shops filled with new titles on Blu-ray, would jump at the chance to get them, just as they purchase on DVD and HD download now. On the other hand, I don't see downloads as the long-term solution. They are a magnet for piracy, making it as easy and painless as possible for people who would not dream of stealing objects to click a button and steal a porn scene. Demand for the increased quality of downloads and streams could also contribute to costs for consumers, as they try to download and store new scenes and movies. To bring this full circle, Hustler should know all this better than most, because not only are they still releasing DVDs (and the occasional Blu-ray), but they are still releasing printed magazines. Not every guy in the world wants to sit at computer or use an internet connection all the time to jerk off ;-) Now for God's sake Hustler, release only your fourth Blu-ray of the year (you can do three, but not four?), and give me MILFs in proper 1080p quality. JigglyBoobs can downloads the compressed HD version, if they wish, but boobs jiggle more clearly on a Blu-ray Disc. ;-) |

When I got a new computer, I bought a 4 TB desktop expansion, and even that is half full (with more than just Brazzers). Eventually, I will have to get more storage space, or delete even more material...you can see where this is going.
I think Hustler would be better served by releasing a variety (however small) of erotic and sexually charged porn titles on Blu-ray, as opposed to simply limiting themselves to parody titles. As I said before, I would love to know how Duck Dynasty XXX is considered commercially viable for Huslter Blu-ray, when something like Medieval MILFs is not.
The important thing to bear in mind is, far more people are Blu-ray ready now then back when studios were releasing titles on the format regularly. This is true for myself, and even for JigglyBoobs above.
Yes, VS releases a lot less on Blu-ray than DVD, but their ratio of Blu-rays to DVDs is better than Hustler, and they have already released two titles this year and have a third one coming up shortly, and surely there will be more to come. For 2013, Hustler released six Blu-ray (or Blu-ray 3D) titles, while Vinegar Syndrome managed eight of them, and this in their first year as a company. Again, Hustler now releases almost nothing on Blu-ray other than parodies, and this is what I am trying to get at, fans of their niche titles (many of which have better sex scenes than their parodies) are left with only a DVD release. And again, Medieval MILFs is a title that was teased as Blu-ray (3D) and is now only coming on DVD. What are fans left to do but buy the DVD or HD download? How many people even realized that this was supposed to come out on Blu-ray before I made this thread? So guys, I do realize that the market is small, and that only a comparative few care about quality vs quantity. But I am sitting here, wallet open, ready to give Hustler my money for a high definition title that was supposed to exist, something that I waited half a year to get with a lot of anticipation, given my personal tastes. But now, after three releases already this year, this is apparently the one that cannot happen. I get that some are fine with downloads, and some don't have Blu-ray players yet, but again, that's not everyone. It does get tiring when I consistently run up against so much resistance to Blu-ray from other porn consumers, and it's sometimes as if people would rather try to rack their brains for reasons against it, as opposed to trying to get more releases and make everyone happy. I'm all for everyone having downloads and DVDs if that's what they really want, but in the same way that JigglyBoobs wants their downloads, I want my Blu-rays, and I think I have been very good about keeping my expectations adjusted. For better or worse, this is the title that, for me, was the straw that broke the camel's back. I don't think it's too much to ask of Hustler to go ahead and release Medieval MILFs on Blu-ray (3D or no 3D), as they originally intended. |
| mr_sphinx Member 117 Posts 10/08 | Unfortunately, the person that is listed at Hustler Video as an e-mail contact is the same gentleman I heard from via GFF, who when confronted with my follow-up message asking him to express my disappointment to Hustler, responded only to direct me to a Hustler Blu-ray sale on AdultDVDEmpire. In looking further, I found the e-mail of someone at LFP Corporate who has yet to respond to me at all after over a week and a follow-up e-mail from me. My messages have always been courteous, so it's very depressing to find that Hustler don't seem to care at all. If they read this message, I would appreciate a response, either via e-mail or here. |
| billybob Senior Member I don't like condoms in porn. 1115 Posts 9/10 | In his opinion and my opinion Blu-ray porn is dying and DVD is pretty much dead. The only 2 studios that still seem to be releasing porn on Blu-ray appears to be Digital Playground and Hustler. Elegant Angel doesn't seem to be releasing them anymore. Rarely Vivid will release a title such as Star Wars XXX. JAV still seems to be released on Blu-ray a fair bit and some Euro studios such as Oftly Goldwin are releasing some. So if Hustler and Digital Playground end up stopping Blu-ray releases then Blu-ray porn from American studios IMO is effectively dead. |

And I would agree with you, billybob, if it weren't for that steady stream of Asian titles. Again for myself, I would love to buy Blu-ray porn, but here I am hardly buying any new titles, because there are hardly any new titles to buy. On the other hand, I just bought over fifteen uncensored Asian Blu-rays and thirty Western catalog Blu-rays from different sources over the past several weeks, and I have been buying steadily when new titles appear. You cannot expect to sell items that don't exist, and you cannot justify the lack of a market when there are so few items to purchase. Sure, the most hardcore fans will snap up a Blu-ray title from 2008 or 2009, but that was eons ago in the world of porn--how many others even know that that title exists, let alone exists on Blu-ray? In fact, web shops like AdultDVDEmpire don't carry everything, and many titles listed as out-of-print are available elsewhere. People say that the industry is dying, and if this is any indication, it's not hard to see why. Here I am, ready to be a paying customer, ready to shell out $30, $40 or more for the 4-5 scenes that make up a movie, and it would seem that, because I ask that Hustler step up to the plate and release this title on Blu-ray (as they have done with three others so far) that my money is no good. Neither, it seems, is my business, since those I have contacted seemingly don't wish to acknowledge my complaint. And this isn't just limited to Hustler, either. It has happened with several companies. It is endlessly frustrating to me, as someone who wants to spend money for quality porn, that the releases I want are in such short supply. |
| mr_sphinx Member 117 Posts 10/08 | So it would seem it will be coming. I just wish Hustler had made that clear from the start. Fingers crossed. |
